Got my 295

I'm just curious because I've never played the game, but what's the view distance like at 28? Do you have a screen shot? How high can you go? I remember playing GTA III on the PC and I always liked cranking the view distance. This game is on my "to buy" list, I'm just curious about the performance after all the complaints I've heard.

Its terrific. One of the best multiplayer games i've ever played.

The game is visually impressive on high/high quality settings, i'll try and get some screenshots for you.

As for the viewing distance, i can go to 100 as long as i'm not on "high quality" rendering, but i choose to be so 28 is the max - which delivers MUCH farther viewing distances than either the PS3 or Xbox 360 (i've tried both).

No, the game is not optimized to the best of its ability. No, it's not the greatest PC port from a console, but that doesn't change the fact that it's damn addictive and extremely fun to play - especially multiplayer. With the right (read: latest) hardware, it is an absolute blast to play.

It... doesn't work that way, man. Please, please, read up on all this hardware you've just poured a couple thousand in to, so you can make informed and intelligent comments.

Let me get this straight...so you are saying heat does not affect performance?

I don't understand why the game lags on my system...even on the lowest settings, the only problem that i can think of is my PSU...

Unless heat crosses the maximum thermal threshold, it will not affect performance. It could shorten lifespan of the component, but no, it will not affect performance.

Heat will not impact the performance of your components unless the system starts throttling them down due to it. 80*C is not going to cause that. Hell, video cards have been known to hit 90*C before.

Idle...

Playing GTA4 for 2 hours...all of the sudden the game started to run fine...

On my old system when i run a game, it lags really bad unless I turn up the case fans to high speed, and then all of the sudden the lag goes away. And it does not go over 90C.

Just a few questions:

I built my last pc about 1yr and half ago and kinda have been caught up with my job and been out of the hardware loop since. I've got a PS3 and an Xbox 360 and really enjoy GTAIV.....and others but reading that its choppy on the PC saddens me. I'm not a hi res nut but I do like my detail settings turned all the way up. I've got a few things I'm gonna buy to bring my pc back up to par since its last update but I don't want to be disappointed in the gameplay vs a console. Am I? I've always loved the Mouse and keyboard controls over a console controller and I'm a hardware nut so I'm really excited about my return to the PC World!! Some tittles I've got for my consoles --- Far Cry, Call of Duty, GTA IV, Left for Dead and Grid.....

My stuff that I'm gonna keep in my current system is: EVGA 680i Ultra MB, Thermaltake TP750W PS, Creative X-Fi Sound Card, case and dvd drives etc.....

Changing: 4gb GSkill Ram, New Processor Q6600 maybe?, Video Card ??, WD VelociRaptor HD.......any suggestions or conflicts on the CPU and Video Card welcome

Thanks

Thanks for replying. I used to play the multiplayer mod for San Andreas and that was a TON of fun with ~100 people. I'll have to check this game out then

I can't comment on your hardware situation as I recently made the jump from a P4 rig to i7 920 (talk about patience!) but i can tell you the gameplay of GTA IV on a pc versus a console equates to almost a completely different experience.

I can play on a friend's PS3 or Xbox 360 with a 52" plasma and it comes nowhere NEAR how much fun it is with a mouse/keyboard 27" 1920x1200 setup - its THAT much different.

As far as hardware goes, GTA IV definitely pushes the limits of processor dependancy, check this review out below to see how much a quad core improves performance (no i7 tests though):

GTA 4 (PC): CPU benchmark review with 13 processors

For those of you calling the game a pile of crap, just try playing the latest NFS Undercover on your quad core - YOU CAN'T. You have to disable all but one core to play it even REMOTELY smoothly! And guess what, EA doesn't care! Now THAT is a bad console port.

I'll stop preaching to you guys now. I just hate the mass of misinformation being passed around here.

Might be the CPU throttling then.

I've gamed on 2 8800GTX's that hit 103c under load (each) in the middle of summer in a soundproof booth - frames did not drop as temperature increased.

Nice card. What is with all of the jealously in here? Good lord.

BTW, GTAIV rune nice on my i7. If they would only fix the memory leak error.

The ram is mirrored. The dual cards are just Fail all the way. Fell for this with 7950GX2 and 9800GX2. Performance with a single card is much better than these dual POS.

Fell for the 9800GX2 too. Not only is it a POS my first failed after 7 months (was never even oc'd unlike my 8800GTX which were heavily oc'd for their entire lifetime until I sold them, albeit watercooled) and my RMA just died less than 30 days after getting it.

I'm a sad panda now:(:(:(

That's only because your personal aura of uberness compensated for the frames.

I've been a multiplayer gamer for close to 10 years and have never had that happen.
