Gordon Freeman needs our help ....

mario is a greedy, thieving, attention whore, who falls asleep on the job and dreams of stuffing his face with pasta. Then he gets "high" on mushrooms and goes around murdering cute innocent animals by jumping on them.

Gordon Freeman's presence in the story and character comes from the interaction that all the other characters have with him. The unique part about half life is every time you chuckle, grit your teeth, stare at Alyx Vance's ass, you are personifying GF through your own experience in the game. That's why he's such a great character.

Very well said.

Gordon Freeman deserves to win this because he's just about the only character who works well within the confines of a videogame, whereas every other character in the competition is either merely an avatar (like Mario) or a character who inflicts their personality on you, when you're supposed to be the star.

For example, I hated Gears of War, and one of the many reasons I did was because I disliked the characters and their stupid dialogue. Anyone can play HL2 and imagine themselves in Freeman's shoes, but while playing Gears of War I was constantly pulled out of the experience by it's insipid story and inane dialogue. Sure I could have skipped all the poorly animated cutscenes, but then there would have been no gravity, there would be no point for my actions. My choices were sit through boring cutscenes I disliked to understand why I was playing, or turn the game into an arcade title with no narrative whatsoever.

In Half-Life I'm never asked to sit back and watch my avatar, and by extension me, do things without my input or control, I'm always the star of the show and I'm always in control. There never comes a point where I groan because Gordon said something stupid, and conversely there never comes a point where I'm pissed because I didn't get to pull off the awesome thing my character did in a cutscene. I'm always complicit in the actions of the protagonist and I never know any more or less than he does. The Half-Life games, especially HL2, are really remarkable examples of singleplayer gaming done right.

Freeman goes to the next round?

It's down to Mario and the Freeman. (Right now the Freeman is kicking Mario's mushroom eatin' ass.) :D

In Doom I'm never asked to sit back and watch my avatar, and by extension me, do things without my input or control, I'm always the star of the show and I'm always in control. Fixed. :)

Freeman and the space marine are completely and totally interchangeable.

Except Doom is in no way shape or form plot or character driven. You don't interact with other characters and the story is merely a throwaway excuse to get you killing demons. It's extremely easy to use a silent protagonist when you don't have a worthwhile plot, characters, or really any set pieces at all.

That's simple not the case for Half-Life or it's sequels.

As soon as Doom took on a larger narrative, in Doom 3, it instantly started using cutscenes to explain the plot.

Your statement just proved that people are voting for HL. Not the "character" of Gordon Freeman.

Heck, Gordon doesn't even "interact" with the other characters in HL. The other characters just talk AT him and he never responds in any way except to go in the exact direction they point him in.

I don't see how a cut scene is any different than locking you in a room and having douchebags talk at you.

Besides the obvious POV shift (sometimes).

Please describe Mario's personality to me.

Where am I defending Mario? RIGHT NOW ;)
I'm not going to defend him much, but he soooorta has one. He does have an RPG which I'm sure gives more into him.

The Freeman got my vote in the finals.

Me too. Only because I really don't care for Mario. Not that I don't like his games, but what a crappy choice to have.

Fixed. :)

This was totally funny to read because it held up so true :)

Doom is plot driven. It's not exciting or original but it is plot driven. And lot of story is delivered by all the pda's laying around. But you're confusing a great world once again rather than the character. The world of HL is great! One of the best ever to me and I can't wait for more. But Freeman really has nothing for HIM and just him.

Gordon Freeman has no emotion. He has no presence. Therefore he has no character.
This the biggest thing about him. You can quote facts about him. He likes a crowbar. He's fast crawling through vents. He's a scientist. Well that tells me nothing about him and what makes him. Why does he like crowbars? Why does he have a knack for crawling through vents. I mean. He can be a robot. That's not a personality.

Again. I'm rooting for him for the finals. I'm just saying I know I'm voting for the wrong reasons technically.

To an extent you're correct. I'm voting for the way a main character is handled, rather than the character himself.

If this whole thing wasn't merely about protagonists, who are usually designed to be as bland as possible so you can impose yourself on them, then this might have been something more than a mere game title popularity contest. As it is, it's really just a vehicle to vote for your favorite game.

Doom is plot driven. It's not exciting or original but it is plot driven. And lot of story is delivered by all the pda's laying around.

Doom != Doom 3.

Doom is not plot driven. You're given a background story, then herded from level to level with no real connection other than an overworld map.

Doom 3 is plot driven, with it's cutscenes and PDA's.

I don't see how a cut scene is any different than locking you in a room and having douchebags talk at you.

In one instance you (the character) aren't having a personality imposed on you, and in the other you are. In one instance you are the character, in the other you're merely manipulating some guy from time to time.

I'm not saying that the other way is always bad, but it's certainly ruined some games for me. I hate sitting through lengthy cutscenes, especially when the story is garbage and the dialogue is poorly written. I'm also not saying the HL way is inherently superior or the way all games should go, but I do think it plays to the medium's strengths far more than the alternative method.

It won't even be close. People on the internet don't actually like Mario in the same way that people don't actually like McDonald's.

If you all want to look at it that way, how about checking what the poll is for? The greatest hero.
Mario, saved one girl, many times proving he couldn't protect her.
Link, he'd be a hero. More depending on which game.
Gordon, got out of black mesa with a few scientists (which was more or less trial grounds for HL2) and then saved humanity.

Either way, I don't remember who said it ITT, Gordon wins because Gordon is me.

Many of you don't seem to like that argument, but if you've played all 4 games you'd feel it a bit more. When Alyx gets hurt, you want to kill that hunter. Same for Eli. When you're put against impossible odds, you take the fight more personally than in other games. Or maybe that is just me.

Very good point.

Fighting off an alien invasion with a crowbar = Heroic
Going around stomping on turtles = sick psychopath

You ever wonder why Mario doesn't use a gun? It's because he can't pass a background check. He's mentally ill, and addicted to mushrooms.

Well in that case. Master Chief saved humanity, fought off two different alien invasions at the same time, and essentially wiped them out. And he can round house kick them off their ride and take it. I don't think I've ever seen a hero do all of that before. :)

I was not emotionally attached at all but there are millions of others that are so it's not just you.

But this whole "Freeman is me because he doesn't do anything" thing is silly. If I was Freeman I'd demand that the resistance mount my machine gun to the stupid boat before I left the dock. I also wouldn't just blindly head in the one path available to me just because some bald guy with glasses said so.

It's even more a suspension of belief than watching a character that interacts with another in a cutscene. At least said character will more than likely make a choice that jives with the personality he's displayed up to that point. Gordon is still nothing more than a floating gun that only runs straight ahead.

But Master Chief doesn't have a PhD in Theoretical Physics from MIT

Well MC has broken people's arms with his bare hands.

I'm not sure Freeman knows that since he needs to be told that by his friends. Maybe they're just yanking his chain since the most complex puzzle-solving he's shown is plugging a connector into a wall socket. :)

Pish posh. Gordon is probably doing astrophysics in his head while wailing on headcrabs with his crowbar. Plus he has a spunky love interest. What does Master Chief have? A grizzled drill sergeant who chomps on cigars.

Well, Alex constantly throws herself at Freeman and he nevers makes a move. Maybe he's gay. Maybe he prefers HEADcrabs. We'll never know until some secondary character says, "You always did enjoy sex, Gordon".

I don't care that Link lost. Maybe I'm bitter that Iolo wasn't even on the list.

(Bonus points to whoever knows who that is) :p

OH i hope i get it! Isn't lolo some sort of blue ball creature? I remember the name but nothing about the game

edit: just looked up. WOW! totally forgot about that game. That was fun!

If you want some good puzzles you should play Research and Development:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/research-and-development

Also known as the greatest HL2 mod ever,

Well, the point wasn't that HL2 doesn't have enough puzzles. It was that Freeman has never developed enough intelligence to solve a puzzle more difficult than the "push the button" action that the Space Marine originally pioneered. :)

I can't believe Freeman beat Link. I think the only conclusion that can be drawn from that is that the poll participants lean toward the hardcore, since Link is probably overwhelmingly the more well known character.

However, when you consider that in each game, Link is actually a different person than the last game, each individual Link hasn't done THAT much, whereas Gordon Freeman has been schlepping since Black Mesa.

A vote for Freeman is a vote for PC gaming. This should be enough reason to vote for him.

He is currently ahead of Mario in the final bracket, 58.2% to 41.8%. So close to absolute victory, the Free Man!
