The Financial Times, citing anonymous Google employees, claims that the search giant is phasing out the use of Windows. I find that a little hard to swallow, at least until the company’s Chrome OS is ready for prime time, but you never know.

The directive to move to other operating systems began in earnest in January, after Google’s Chinese operations were hacked, and could effectively end the use of Windows at Google, which employs more than 10,000 workers internationally. “We’re not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort,” said one Google employee.

Chrome is/was never meant to replace a full OS. It's built for netbooks and such as a lightweight and fast interface for low spec machines.

No way they are dumping Windows for workhorse machines.

I've read in other articles about this, and it seems the vulnerability that got them was IE6 running on XP. It seems like to me, they just need to update their Windows installations.

I dunno if they are dumping Windows, but they sure as heck aren't replacing it with ChromeOS and they definitely favor Linux followed by Mac.

This just opens the door for hackers to really start hacking Macs. Want an insecure company infrastructure? Just use a Mac. Only a matter of time before you're hacked if you're as big as Google.

Plus I think this story is bullshit anyways. Why would they not use Windows anymore? 90% of the population that uses Google products use them on Windows based PCs.

It could be a good test case. With 20000+ employees, and arguably some of the most draconian data gathering in the industry, we might finally see how security compares between Everything vs. Everything - Windows

This happened a quite a while ago actually. Source: Friend who works for Google

When you are as big a Google, what will you do about Domains and all of that? To my knowledge, there is no Mac OSX domain controller or anything. Anytime some one mentions a "Mac Server" I laugh.

This.

Google is full of themselves. They think they can do better than Microsoft? It's not Windows that's a security hazard, but rather their company is one gigantic target for hackers, crackers, botters, and cybercriminals. I'd like to see them protect themselves using other operating systems or even their own.

Maybe Google should implement proper security on their employees workstations instead of letting everyone there do anything they want. Whitelisting not blacklisting.

well if they do move from lets say mac osx, (or even linux), it would be fun to see them having a security breach with their new "secure" system. I wonder what they would say. lol, of all the software giants out there, I would bet that MS really has the most experience when it comes to security, why?, 90% of all computers in the world are based on windows, and all hackers would rather target that 90%.

They use Google OS, which has nothing to do with Chrome OS that's just a lightweight OS for netbooks.

Someone had a rant figured out in their head before they even finished reading the headlines. Protip: This has shit-all to do with Google making an OS. This is about Google phasing out the use of Windows for its workstations in favor of OS X or Linux. In fact, Google has internally been using a modified version of Ubuntu for years now anyway, this is just an effort to move the minority in the company still on Windows over to OS X or Linux.

Someone had a target figured out in his head before reading my post. I mentioned variety of operating systems, not just Google's own OS, just as you said.

My point was that it doesn't matter what OS they chose. They're still high profile target and they're still going to be attacked. Remember, obscurity is not the same thing as security.

Before you make an ass of you and me, I did read the article.

QFT.
Only way to safeguard that is white-listing on border devices. BUT you could've done that with Windows, too.

Make no mistake, security is just the cover-argument.

LOL.
You REALLY believe that?

or just use adobe and get thousands of cases cause the update failed, we dont have time to properly test those security fixed cause there will be a new one by the time the pilot is done.
Pilot is half a day...
Other software updates may have two weeks.

google earns on people using linux instead of windows, they are giving away android(linux) and well, google still earns on it!

They'll most likely use Linux. What distro, I don't know, but I know it's not ever going to be mac.

Most employees there are already using Linux (an internal version of Ubuntu called "Goobuntu") on their workstations. Probably some are using Windows for whatever reason..

They get a choice of also having either a Windows/Linux laptop (Thinkpad), or an OSX laptop (MBP 15")

For what it's worth, I have been to the Google campus a couple times and it appeared to me that most employees were carrying around MBP's already.

I stand corrected. I don't use apple products outside of my iPhone.

Well, somewhat.
LDAP and Apple's OD don't hold a candle to AD... There's a reason why Windows is king in the domain. Google knows that, too. Like I said, they're just using security as an excuse to "ditch" it. We all know a Google OS is coming, and we be fools to not combine that together in one pot to see the real reason they're ditching it.

LOL.
You REALLY believe that?

Uh, yes? Why would you believe anything to the contrary? As has already been stated, Google uses a modified version of Ubuntu and OS X internally. They aren't using Chrome OS (not to mention Chrome OS wouldn't work for them at all anyway)

Your words do not convey your point. In fact, your words claim that Google will be competing against Microsoft as a result of this news item - which isn't true at all.

Oh, and you didn't mention any other operating systems.

So, you're saying Google is creating an OS they know is worthless?

LOL.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at you.

Oh, and you didn't mention any other operating systems.

First you mentioned me raving about Google OS, now you're saying I only mentioned Microsoft. You can do better than that.

Let me highlight my original reply:

I'd like to see them protect themselves using other operating systems or even their own.

Seriously, do you have anything better to do or did someone piss in your Cheerios this morning?

Don't presume to tell me what I'm thinking or talking about. Take a hike.

my question is why wouldn't they? the have the staff to support there own distro and could easily maintain their systems. now the people doing design work and such I don't see so much

I'm not trying to tell you what you're thinking, I'm telling you what you're saying. From you're replies it would seem that you did not mean what you said. So proofread next time to make sure you are saying what you mean, because what you said is that Google would be competing with Microsoft as a result of this, which isn't remotely true.

If you're unable to accurately put your thoughts into written form, take a hike.

So, you're saying Google is creating an OS they know is worthless?

No. I'm going to guess you don't know jack shit about Chrome OS or what it can and can't do. Its basically an OS that boots into Chrome, with no native apps of any kind. It is intended for cheap netbooks with no hard drives, not developer workstations. If you think Google is going to replace all its high end desktops and laptops with sub $300 netbooks, you're insane.

I'm not talking about the Chrome OS as we know it today. I've never used the term "Chrome OS", you did, I'm talking about the Google OS. Perhaps if you spent more time talking to folks at Google and less time formulating strawman arguments you'd know this.

Don't mind him. He tends to put words in people's mouth.

*sigh*

We already know what "Google OS" is, its Ubuntu. That's been said in this very thread like 5 times. If you want "Google OS", go download Ubuntu. Google will not be releasing "Google OS". The only OS Google will be releasing is Chrome OS, which is why I assumed you were talking about that - for that I am sorry, I gave you too much credit it would seem.

Perhaps if you spent any time talking to folks at Google you'd know that "Google OS" has been around for years now. It isn't new.

Not really sure if this means anything. It's not like anything that Google does for desktop computers WON'T run on Windows or any other OS from that standpoint. Just means that Google will be using an inferior OS for business purposes and only hurting themselves. Really, if they can't secure Windows desktops BEHIND a firewall, what chance does our Gmail stand?

Like I said, they're just using security as an excuse to "ditch" it. We all know a Google OS is coming, and we be fools to not combine that together in one pot to see the real reason they're ditching it.
If that were true, they would also be "ditching" OS X. They are not. 'Banning' one alternative non-"Google OS" system while fully supporting another alternative non-"Google OS" system would be completely nonsensical if what you're suggesting is in any way accurate, is that not correct?

If both were being 'banned', then you might be on to something. As it is, however, the theory doesn't hold water.

admob, its highly directed to use google services.
Having apple or microsoft with their own service can do the same, meaning have a huge influence in mobile market = use google services = ads sale = money.
Android uses admob which google owns.
But what does that have to do with Windows desktops?

Just means that Google will be using an inferior OS for business purposes and only hurting themselves.
It stands to reason that Google wouldn't take actions to deliberately hurt themselves. Given Google's quite impressive history, knowingly stagnating their own growth is clearly not part of company policy.

For Google, the "inferior" OS just so happens to be Windows.

Of course and for most of us Windows is the best choice overall. And it's not like everything Google does won't work on Windows first still. Just grandstanding that doesn't mean anything to anyone.
