Hey everyone,

For almost 15 years now I have been using No-IP for dynamic DNS for the house. I don't have my own domain, but rather just use one of their silly little freebies, just so I can SSH in to my shit.

In that time their price has gone through the roof.

In 2010 I paid $4.95 for a year of Enhanced Dynamic DNS. That may have been an introductory offer though.

The following year I paid $9.95, which is probably a more realistic baseline.

Then it went up to $14.95 in 2019, $19,95 in 2015, $24.95 in 2016, and now at this years renewal they want $34.99 for the same service.

I can't help but feel like I am being ripped off. Sure there has been inflation since 2010, but not THAT MUCH inflation.

Heck $9.95 in 2010 dollars (according to CPI-U) is equivalent to $14.43 today. So adjusted for inflation since 2010 the price has gone up by almost 2.5x....

The kicker is, I don't need their enhanced service. It's just that they try to annoy you into paying for it, as the free service requires you you log on and "confirm" your account every 30 days or it is deleted. I have a busy life, and I am pretty much guaranteed to forget, thus I paid for enhanced.

So I guess my question is, who do you all use for dynamic DNS, how do you like their service, how much do you pay? I think it might be time for a change.

Edit: I went to cancel, and they offered a year for "only" $20.99. I might just take them up on it, but only because I'd like more time to find an alternative without service interruption.

So, I'd still like to hear what your alternatives are!

Oddly enough I use their free service and literally just renewed it before coming here to the [H]. They tried to upsell me at 1.99/mo for the same service you have. Honestly the whole renew every 30 days is a PITA but not quite worth paying them for it yet. That said, I've heard good things about duckdns.org. From what I understand it is 100% a lowkey 1 or 2 person glorified hobby project that has been around for years.

You must be much better organized than I am :p

Maybe I can script it somehow. Not sure. Probably not, since it requires an MFA code once every 30 days, which is really annoying.

I am going to have to check them out. Thanks.

Actually, if I could ask you a question..

Which plans do they offer you?

I have the 25 host plan, which was the lowest enhanced plan back when I signed up in 2010.

I get the impression they are doing something sketchy here, and only showing me more expensive plans when I click the "change plans" button, not lower end ones.

I also can't find any obvious way to return to the free plan, should I want to do so.

I guess I could cancel and re-up, but then I probably lose my free domain names, which while not the end of the world, would be a slight bummer.

That $1.99 plan, is that just one host? Or, is it fewer than 25 hosts? Because I can see no option for a "fewer than 25 hosts" plan.

Ahh, I see, the $1.99 plan you mention is per month, not per year, which I just paid.

So they overcharging me compared to their other customers, but I still think this is a bad deal, and may look elsewhere, probably the duckdns site.

Looks like DuckDNS might be a no-go.

Either I am completely blind, or they don't have an option to directly log in to an account.

They only offer logins through third parties (Google, Github, Twitter).

I'll never use 3rd party logins. I don't trust the Googles of the world enough (at all) for that.

I appreciate you mentioning them though. They seem like a good option apart from this.

I do my dynamic dns with https://dns.he.net/ and they're also secondary DNS on my (personal) domains.

They had an issue recently, but otherwise, pretty solid for $0. Web UI is ancient, but it works enough.

Company is active, but their forums are pretty dead.

Cheapest domain you can find would get you your SSH access.

The way I do it I dunno how many can, my gateway handles ddns. Ironically I've never needed it as my isp hasn't changed my ip in 7 years.

What else fo you need it for

Buy a Domain and run a pfsense box and set it up with your providers API key and done? I have that for wireguard, pfsense auto updates the IP in Gandi for me if it changes.
