Gigabyte Mobo & Memory timings

I was looking at parts for a new build I'm doing and came across the "GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3"

In the notes on Newegg is says:

Notice: Only DDR2-800 memory supporting JEDEC approved 1.8V operation with timings of 5-5-5 or 6-6-6 is supported on Intel Desktop Boards based on Intel 965 Express Chipsets.

Now, if I but this memory:

As long as the sticks will boot at 5-5-5@1.8V, you'll be fine. You can manually set the timings and voltage later, but if it doesn't work at 1.8V, it might not post. Most of the memory issues have been solved by bios updates. Get the latest (F8 I believe) and go from there.

Perhaps, but the boards you get are still a mix of different bios revisions. Mine came with F2 I think.
 
The F7 BIOS starts you off at 1.8v. From there it can be increased to 2.5v (+0.7v). I wouldn't bother wasting money on so-called performance DDR-II. If you can find some generic Micron D9GKX, they will overclock just as well.
 
I had the Dominator RAM, which is more aggressive than the XMS2, run at 1.8v on boot. People are just recommending more expensive Micron D9 over the generic stuff. I returned the Dominator and got the generic D9 just because it ran better with the DS3.

That XMS2 has 5-5-5-12 timings just as my regular D9GKX modules do. Corsair is known for having a big markup on their prices so save your money. My Micron was $30 less than that overpriced Corsair.
 
The high end D9 stuff has known problems with the DS3. Gigabyte said that it was a combination bios fix and hardware fix. You have to change out a capacitor and then it works fine. It does work, but you won't max out your memory with the DS3. You're limited to around a 470mhz FSB or something like that (didn't try it...just read about it).
 
I think people are blowing smoke out their asses. The P5B Deluxe was rated to 500 MHz and the caps on that board are literally the same as the DS3. Unless someone is able to give me a specific part number and capacitance rating of the capacitor in question, I'd prefer not having the D9/DS3 threads chased down with that information. Reading is not proof of a problem, it is either myth or fiction.
 
I have the ds3, and I have corsair 6400 dominator ram. It boots no problem.

one of the first bios revisions took care of that.

er, I know nothing about the P5B but doubt its the same design exactly down to trace routing and exact value/tolerance/manuf in the placement of capactiors. There is a known problem with Gigabyte and micron D9 memory chips, so much so that one highly respected site did not include the DS3 in a product comparison. I have no proof if this is a capacitor issue or not but the problem is most certainly real. And a little searching on xtreamsystems forum will provide the information you demand. Since I dont have $50,000 worth of logic analizers, o-scopes nor the source code of the bios I am forced to believe what I read when it is from reliable sources, but always with a grain of salt. Cap or no cap there is something not quite right with Gigabyte and Micron D9 memory.

I wasn't really looking to overclock anything, just wanted a decent speed for memory.

Thanks to the beauty of NewEgg's customer review system, though, I've learned the Corsair XMS2 sticks I picked out there will post at 1.8v for the first boot, I'll have to update the bios in order to get the 4-4-4-12 timings with 1.9v though.

I rarely count forums as a true source of information when it comes to technical problems with a product, especially with XS. It's no better than picking up a newspaper and reading falsely written articles. Seeing that XS and Valid-Secret are the only ones complaining, I'll wait for some more mature sites to respond with the issue.
