I feel like a total newb on this but games for windows live is forcing me to ask because it sucks. How do I track down which games for windows live ID a game I own is assigned to. I'm trying to re-play dirt2 and have it installed on steam. However when trying to log into GFWL and it keeps giving me errors saying the game isn't associated with the few email addresses I'm used to and the game key is NOT transferrable. So I own the game now but cannot play it. Thanks a lot craptastic Microsoft.

so its MS's fault you dont rememner your log in info?

No dude I'm not saying it's MS's fault I'm saying they make it more difficult than it needs to be. I've read countless forum entries on multiple sites about people having tons of issues with GFWL. I'm a competent person.

I agree GFWL sucks donkey balls, but not for the reasons you say.

Try loading gfwl with an offline profile, you won't have your saves, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to go through the registration bullshit.

Why should there be a totally separate login when the game is already tied to steam? No need to tie it to two different things.

Dirt 2 isn't tied to Steam. He just happens to own it on Steam. There is no Steam requirement for the game.

Yep. There are tons of legitimate issues that GFWL can cause, and it generally sucks. However, forgetting your own login credentials is not one of them.

How many differen't GFWL accounts do you have? Why don't you look through your email history and see if you have registration emails from it.

If you still can't figure it out, create an offline profile.

I've never had any issues with GFWL. I don't know why everybody trashes on it.

never had any trouble logging into my GWFL account when I play any of the GFWL games I got.

Exactly, GFWL is an abomination that's been unleashed on gamers, and... wait a minute, you didn't write down your password?

I like GFWL. Because I am an achievement whore, and no one has a better achievement platform than Microsoft Live.

play games for windows games all the time, never ever had any issues. all of my games work just fine.

If only you could redem your gamerscore for MS Points to buy avatar stuff or xbox themes...I hate spending real money on faux money to buy faux merchandise for my avatar lol

So in simple terms you lost your original log info and now you wanna be able to transfer the key you already registered to another account ...

And because of your fuck up GFWL sucks?

1. GFWL does suck but not for the reasons you listed.

2. Always save your login info somewhere secure incase you forget it.

You really can't blame anyone but yourself in this case.

It's tied to his steam account, so there's no need to latch extra malware onto his copy when it already has DRM. Go ahead, make the case: what good does GFWL do that makes it necessary?

It tracks achivements

And if you have a Xbox Live account you can send messages to them , check what your friends are playing.

Its got some cool features but the software itself causes so many crash bugs in various games and after years of it being out is still pretty unstable.

The GFWL team has been told for years whats wrong with it and from they've said in interviews they "gave gamers what they wanted" . So don't expect it to be more streamlined and change any time soon.

Never really dealt with gfwl, except for my special copy of fallout 3, I liked the xbox live feel but wasn't really adding anything to the game

It's still a problem. This wouldn't have happened if the game did not require a login. It's just another reason GFWL is shit.

I had a shitload of problems with GFWL on Dirt 2 as well. Actually GFWL is shit no matter what game you're using it with, but it so happens that was the game where GFWL gave me trouble. I hate it and I hate achievements and I don't want to set up any stupid login either online or offline. As far as I'm concerned you should be able to load the game and play - period, without signed into or being hounded by any other service. If people want to use the service that's fine, just have an option over on the corner where people who like GFWL can use it or ignore it completely. But don't try and shove it down our throats.

I have had no issues with Dirt 2 and GFWL. As for it being something that MS is shoving down your throat think again. GFWL titles are clearly marked. If you don't wany GFWL don't buy the title, no matter how cheap Steam has it on sale.

If he owns it on steam, then there is absolutely a steam requirement to launch the game. Not sure what you were getting at.

I'm getting at that its not a Steamworks game so it is not exactly tied to Steam. It uses none of Valve's services and is not in any way required. He could buy it retail or from another service. Valve does not and nor should they force every publisher who uses Steam to use Steamworks.

FML finally tracked down my old log in. My fault but shit I have a legit key and I'm not trying to use the key in two places at once. Thanks for all the good advice everyone. GFWL can't hold a candle to Steam.

GFWL is just redundant to me for a steam game. Making it a requirement is annoys me at best. I just want to game, why make it more complicated, why add another possible failure point to the experience.

That and a blowjob will give you an orgasm. Does anyone over 11 get validation from achievements?

And if you have a Xbox Live account you can send messages to them , check what your friends are playing.

So games need to be tied to a malware account to allow communication with consoletards? Because there aren't already a million fucking social networking methods?

There is an option to use it or not. It's called, nobody told you to buy it so therefore you had an option :p.

Maleware really? GFWL has issues (being nice) but maleware?

Wow good to know there are doctorates in Psychology on [H]. Oh wait cutting and pasting a link to a wikipedia article makes you a master in nothing and makes you look like a judgemental turd.
And my judgment is getting more and more confident by the minute.

Maleware really? GFWL has issues (being nice) but maleware?

Malware defined: "The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code."

GFWL = textbook malware

Well ok I'll give you annoying. Hostile and intrusive? Not quite. However its not maleware and its really hyperbole to call it such.

GFWL would have a point if it allowed cloud saving...

Otherwise I've never seen the point in it, especially for games that already use steam. The secuROM and GFWL DRM and steam games are a giant pain in the ass (especially as the installer for GFWL hasn't been set up properly on any steam game ive tried it on).

^ you can thank the overzealous fear of pirates for that crap.....

Fixed for accuracy :p DRM is always a pain in the ass for consumers (so they sell less) and largely a waste of time for publishers (and makes games cost more, so they sell less, it's been shown in some study that DRM costs at least 10% of some big studio games budget, for no purpose) and is unproven to provide any kind security.

All it means is that a 8gb ISO download will have to be an 8gb ISO + 12kb crack. Any DRM other than a simple CD key should be illegal for being damaging the games industry, imagine how many sales ubisoft lost out over the AC2 drm?

But seriously, if there was a point (like cloud saving, especially when windows live has the online documents) then I don't think people would mind it so much. As it serves no purpose whatsoever, and is a pain in the ass for legitimate customers, and can easily by bypassed with an "offline profile" for non legal customers, it's hard to see the point of it.
