It ought to be interesting to see what Gearbox Software does with Homeworld now that they have bought the rights.

Gearbox Software has prevailed as the highest bidder in the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise from THQ. Brian Martel, Gearbox Software's Chief Creative Officer, has great love and respect for Relic's brilliant, fun and innovative game and personally spearheaded the acquisition.

I wonder what the season pass will have in it...
"- Custom Skins for the Mothership
- Unique supercarrier for the Kushan
- Bentusi traders hat and Turanic Raiders mask for your character"

.... All for $9.99 from the Steam Store. :D

I hope they ruin this with too many DLCs. Borderlands 2 was just too much. I already consider DLCs the equivalent to a PC developer's poor excuse for an incomplete game meant to nickle-and-dime PC gamers.

Release a full game with all the features and bells-and-whistles, then release a full expansion pack if introducing a new story plus new characters and units. No DLCs.

** I hope they DON'T ruin this with too many DLCs.

(I think faster than I type...)
You had me worried there!
Seeing as Gearbox seems to be interested in reviving brands that went crappy or disappeared, I have high hopes. I am ignoring what happened with Aliens and Duke, I expect the next games from those to be much, much better. Since there is no existing work to build off of for Homeworld 3, we should get a quality product right off the bat, rather than a stinker just to fulfill obligations. Also, HW/Cataclysm/HW2 will probably be updated for Steam :)

This looks promising. Something has to be better than nothing at this point.

I really hope so, I'm so tired of fighting those games to make them work on modern hardware. I just played through HW2 about 3 weeks ago and it was so much fun, way more difficult than I remembered.

Why the fuck would anyone ignore those? The only other track record they have is Borderlands and presumably that's only decent because it's their own IP.

I don't expect ANYTHING from Gearbox anymore other than disappointment.

Like he said, because they don't have any existing work to do a halfassed job of finishing.

Of course considering that gearbox had plenty of time with duke and ACM, they still don't have an excuse.

As far as borderlands... the console-esque menu system drove me nuts, and I found myself bored to death fighting the same handful of enemies over and over and over and over and over in borderlands 2. Never tried brothers in arms, but the rest of gearbox's portfolio is primarily a bunch of ports that I couldn't care less about. Frankly Gearbox has always been way overhyped.

I be more interested in Steam versions of the old games than a Gearbox version of HW. Haven't been impressed with anything they have made. So this will definitely be a wait and see situation.

HW brings back memories from my childhood. I still love that game, I'll do a play through every couple of years. It would be really cool to see it updated with textures that aren't 8x8 pixels. loI Although I never really did like HW2 for some reason.

HW1 was a one-shot deal because of its nature of mostly being forcused on a civilization as opposed to a handful of people of interest. It was the antithesis of Hero Units type thinking that prevails today.

Well shit, goodbye Homeworld 3. Given Gearbox's lack of doing any of the actual work and handing off to someone else to finish, I can see the future Homeworld game being a POS, poor Relic, I'm concerned over who is going to nab up the Warhammer 40K IP.

Hey now it's possible they won't completely screw this up

I mean it's possible Congress will pass a bill to properly fund NASA too but

yeah it's kinda hopeless

A:CM doesn't fit that excuse, either. Even if Timegate made a lot of it, Gearbox subbed it out to Timegate so it's still entirely their fault. DNF is a different matter entirely.

If it's developed in-house by Gearbox and not by anyone other developer under Gearbox, I'll give it a chance just like I did with Borderlands 1 & 2, which I still enjoy playing.

For Gearbox:
For us gamers out there on the PC, please do not fall into the EA Disease and ruin it like they did with the Command & Conquer series post-Generals.

If it's single player mission campaigns, offline only unlike Starcraft 2 and the upcoming Generals 2.

If it's multiplayer, follow the Company of Heroes-style matchmaking, allow possible co-op, but NO, absolutely NO cash shop or pay-to-win items unlike the upcoming Generals 2 and current Age of Empires Online.

Also, keep or slightly improve the controls of individual units within a 3D space; keep the general feel of the game, settings, units and races (old and possibly new)..

Get a publisher to fund it while secretly using the funds for Borderlands 3. Of course.

Well... at least it wasn't EA. With Gearbox there's at least a chance of goodness, versus an almost guaranteed buttfuck with EA.

"great love and respect"

Wasn't something similar said about ACM? I believe it when I read the fan reviewsafter release Shitbox.

They needed to pay for Borderlands 3 somehow. Outsource the development, do a few weeks of all-nighters to get it to the point where it can cert, and then rake in the cash!

DNF was a turd from the get-go, long before it ever fell into Gearbox's hands. A polished turd is still a turd.

Well, it looks like the HW series remakes will happen...apparently. As a fan, I sincerely hope Gearbox don't fark things up. Their recent record does not put them in a kind light =/

How bout another Freespace?:(

What I would love to see is a new engine that allows one to replay all of Freespace 1/2 and ,while dreaming, how about all of Wing Commander Series to boot. Then if that sells well release a Freespace versus Wing Commander Multiplayer :)

This marks the end of Homeworld to me, Gearbox buying the IP just to roll out a shit game for long time fans yet again!

lol.gif
exactly what I thought of when I read the title of the thread...

I've only played 2 gearbox games...Opposing Force and Blueshift.

And if I was to believe all the rage about other games they made, those 2 will be the only ones I'll ever buy.

It ought to be interesting to see what Gearbox Software does with Homeworld now that they have bought the rights.

They will put minimal effort into the franchise, and f#@k it up, like DNF, and Alien Colonial Marines (although handing that off to another developer to deal with was bloody stupid to start with). Only thing I have heard about them buying the franchise, is just updating the two existing games to HD level of graphics (which has already been done thanks to the modding community).

Poor Relic, one of the pillars of keeping THQ running, and sold off to Sega and Gearbox, to have their flawless reputation ground into the mud.
