I just don't F'ing get it. What do the marketers think at Samsung and other tech companies ?

Who wouldn't want to have best in class leading battery life, with a slightly thicker phone. Vs. razor wafer thin looking phone, with average battery life.

Customers buy thinner phones over phones with better battery life. Just saying "This has good battery life" doesn't WOW anyone in a store. People pick up a razor thin phone and think they are holding something special.

People have purchased millions of edge lit flat screens even though back lit screens were cheaper to produce and had better picture quality in many cases. But the back lit TVs were like 3.5 inches and the edge lit models are closer to 1 inch so they have more WOW factor in the store.
 
Looks like they dropped the IR blaster from the Note too. That's pretty much a deal breaker itself for me, I use the one on my M8 every day.

Yeah, Samsung really stopped giving a shit about functionality and is putting way too much focus on aesthetics. It's a fine balance to have for sure, but I guess they totally went with the "can't beat'em, join'em" mentality against Apple.

I'm not sure that's the best analogy, because there's more weight (IMO at least) in better battery life on phones than there is in better back-lighting on a TV. I think the main reason thinner phones sell is because most OEM's aren't putting large batteries in their phones in the first place to justify their larger/thicker build. They're pretty much all buying into the fad that thinner is better even at the cost of battery life. Either that or they're too cheap to put a bigger battery in there in the first place even if it makes the phone thinner or not.
 
If any of this is true then I've completely written off the note add my next buy.
 
It almost seems like Apple managed to get a mole high up into that place to completely destroy their product line-up. I mean it can't really be dismissed as mere stupidity, can it?

Looks like it's there. Same ports as S6 but the top oval IR and microphone pinhole are further apart instead of centered.

Unless they shrank the hell out of it and recessed it inside the hole, looks like another mic to me, but I guess it's possible. You'd have to wonder how well it works being that small of an emitter though.
 
I was holding out for the 5, but when I saw that an SD card was not going to be in it I jumped on an LG G4 when they had it on sale.

Coming from the Note 3 (which I broke the digitizer on), the screen is just as good (if a bit smaller) - which is crazy because I really have only liked OLED up until this phone.

I'm hoping Samsung will realize we all don't have unlimited data plans and put SD cards back in. I really like having my music, audio books, and a couple of movies on my 128GB SD card that was only (!!!) 60 bucks.
 
It looks like a iPhone body wise which isn't a bad thing, I'm glad to see them get away from the generic plastic body. I don't like the screen to body ratio, that screen will be easy to break and expensive as fuck to replace.

The real deal breaker for me is the small mah non removable battery.

They fired essentially their entire team that was responsible for the S4/S5 and Note series and promoted a design guy. So, yes they are that retarded.

Internally speaking I am fine with the Ram/SoC/whatever. But I like having a removable battery, if you take that away at least make it last a decent amount of time! Also the SD Card is a pretty big factor for me, I already have the attachment for iPhones to use one as my wife doesn't use hers so that's not a problem for me but the lack of IR Blaster is enough for me to not care enough to consider it anymore.

I REALLY hope these are all fake and with the official announcement we get a decent surprise.

Should I just go with the Note 4?

I'm in the same boat. If the Note 5 isn't super attractive to make up for the missing features (128 GB version maybe?) then I may be shopping around for something else. Seems silly to get a phone that's already one year out of date.

What's the word on the S6 Edge Plus?
 
So 1gb ram more than Motorola X Style (or Pure in US), tad faster CPU, same screen res, same class cameras, but lacks removable battery and up to 128gb SD, while IMO looking worse, and costing about 300 euro more, and having bloated interface?

Yep, made my mind for my next phablet. Thanks Sammy for helping me choose Motorola :)
 
I'm not sure I like the idea of the note 5 just yet. I guess I'll have to wait for the full announcement on the sizing. However even only 64gb of storage means I will have to pay attention, not to mention 6gb of that will be bloatware -_-
 
Phones peaked out with 2012 Galaxy Note II. Since I use a phone more like a pocket server/emulator would like to see even more performance and efficiency so ARM A72 cores which would put it ahead of equivalent Intel Core M performance, 12 hour screen on time and 1 month idle time. Won't have a need for removable battery anymore plus I'm going on three years on original battery and by then due for an upgrade anyway. SD card slot is nice to have but much rather prefer more internal storage since apps can't be installed on SD card without jumping through hoops and have had Sandisk cards die prematurely but never with internal storage.

(Rumor some Note 5 models - specifically the dual SIM variants - will come with a MicroSD slot)

If there's a 128 GB version, with or without a MicroSD slot, I may give in and get an Edge Plus. Does anything else come close? LG G4 maybe?

A new Nexus phone would be nice, and there's apparently one in the pipeline, but rumor has it that it's being made by Huawei and there is a focus on making it inexpensive rather than flagship.
 
If the note5 comes without touchwiz, then it will be a good contender. touchwiz is a resource hog after about a month or so of usage.
 
I'm starting to like the Motorola X Style. Compared to the Note 5, the biggest difference is the downgraded octacore to hexacore cpu, better camera, 64GB+128GB (removable memory), downgraded ~748ppi to 520ppi display, ZERO bloatware, battery still non-removable, NO STYLUS.

The battery and stylus is huge for me, but I can probably sacrifice the removable battery for total comprehensive insurance and the turbo charge feature. LovE the stereo sound and camera that the Note 5 can't beat.

Well, the "better camera" thing is debatable (the GS5 camera, which is presumably being reused here, is likely to be better in low light). However, I think I'd snag a Moto X Style just for the lightweight software, timelier updates and Moto Maker. It's not about whether a phone has the nicest specs on paper, or has neat new features on launch... it's whether it feels fast, stays fast, gets new features quickly and feels special.

3,000mAh battery is a deal killer. For a phablet with a 2k sceen, that tiny battery will give crap life. Even with the new and better performing and more efficient hardware. 3,000mAh is just not enough.

This phone will be a wall hugger.

And Touchwiz LOL no thanks. Stock is the only way to run Android, or even better custom ROM's based off stock are #1.

Nexus phones FTW.

Samsung has been doing this forever. Finding rooting methods for my s4 was a real pain because every carrier had a different model.

Why can't Scamsung make their new phones like the Nexus 6, meaning one version only needed, as it has all radios inside to work on all the carriers.

Plus let it be easy to root, and custom Recovery installed as easy on the Nexus 6.

Why won't Samsung do that ?

Because that would save them time, effort, and make sense.
 
The reason google makes their phones with all radios is because they must. They don't have enough volume to have 5 different phones made. Samsung on the other hand has no problem selling millions of every phone on every carrier. Samsung is more like apple where they can actually have trouble sourcing enough parts to produce all their phones. That why in the past there were even different phones with different SOCs, Samsung / QUALCOMM. Also its very likely the carriers request this as they prefer people to not be able to move which is why they also request everything be locked down.
 
I read some site, saying the old 4,100mAh battery size rumor is true still. I e-mailed the dude asking show me proof, because everything I read in the past week, all but guaranteed the tiny small 3,000mAh battery for the Note 5. Nothing whatsoever saying the Note 5 is getting a massive 4,100mAh battery.
 
Im gonna wait and see. When they make it official. I cant do with limited storage. Especially if they decide to rape us with the prices of the 64 gb version or the 128gb version. I just upgraded my sd card in my note 3 to 64gb. Cant see myself going below 64 external and 32gb internal.
Last week i had to clean my internal cache, it was hogging 10 gigs alone. Which is why I now use my externals for media and pictures.
If this is true and the prices are ridiculous, then im getting the note 4.
 
Considering we are only a couple days away from the official unveiling... seeing that I have a note 4 already, I am just looking forward to a new phone in general though.

3,00mAh battery !!! :( ( Don't expect the Note 5 to have killer Note 2 type battery life, or even anything close to iPhone 6 Plus battery life. It will realistically be a little better than the crap battery life the S6 gets )

Samsung's got us by the balls. If you want the SoC, display, pen, etc. what other options do you have? Even dropping the pen and display from the list there's no competition as of yet for SoC if you want fast consistent performance under heavy scenes in Sky Force 2014, emulators, etc. unthrottled while charging without the overheat message.
 
Rumors suggest Samsung GS7 to go back to using Qualcomm S820, so there's always that option.
