G80 specs revealed

May i ask what display do you have that will run 2560x1600?

Thanks,

Sunin

I believe it will be a Dell 30 once he recognizes there is no match out there that can provide what the Dell offers for the money. ;) @Stalker

I think that its possible that it would, but its all speculation, it may be choppy. The game engine is an unknown quantity, the cards performance is an unknown quantity, so its hard to really know right now.

I want one now, im still stuck with a 6800GT AGP right now this card is really showing its age. :(

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Hey, I'm watching the competition VERY closely. It may be the dell I get OR it can easily be one of the competitors that has a better 30 incher. But argh that damnable dell good pixel return policy and price is tempting though. :(

To me, the real question is: Will this card (especially with two of them in SLI) actually make the CPU a major factor in gaming performance again. The bottleneck has been the video card for so long now, I haven't seen much point in upgrading my CPU (nor has [H] by the way).

So, will this next batch of video cards finally move the bottleneck back to the CPU and make all these Conroe/C2D upgrades worthwhile?

I have the pci-e version of the same. :(

I would MUCH rather have a PCI-E 6800GT than this pile of crap X800GTO I'm on right now....Wanna trade?

HELL no! LOL! :p

It has served me well (with my 2 gigs of system ram) playing HL2, BF2, etc. etc. at 1280x768 with all the eye candy on at 60 plus fps! weeeeeeeee!!!
But that was then.....this is now.

Kentsfield/K8L? Doubtful.

I have a 7800GT with a 7900GTO on its way... My way of dealing with all these super-powered games (Crysis) is to only buy 19in LCD's. That way I know I have a really good chance of playing crysis with full eye candy since I'm "limited" to 1280x1024 res.

Cheers to NV and LOL to all idiots making absurd claims over this prereleased information.

There is price speculation all over, $450-$500 and $550-$650 keep getting mentioned I believe.

How will the G80 compare to the 7950GX2's? Will one 8800GTX be faster than a 7950GX2?

I'm sure it would be. The 7950gx2 was the old flagship of nvidia. Why would nvidia come out with a new flagship card that is slower than their previous flagship?

Truly separate user and kernel spaces, being able to stop and restart entire subsystems (such as video) without a reboot, better i/o handling and memory addressing, more flexible and efficient use of multiple threads. Personally I am looking forward to Vista (and yes I've used over half a dozen builds of it at this point).

so they've taken a point from linux? and yet the linux crowd is starting to ponder moving gui into kernel space... wtf mate?

I thought their flagship was the 7900GTX.

So, basically, you feel that even with two 8800GTXs in SLI, we'll still be GPU limited and there would essentially be no point in upgrading from a decent CPU of today's vintage (I'm running an AMD X2 4400+ at 2.5GHz).

It'd be nice to just upgrade my video cards (and PSU) and still get all the performance without needing a CPU upgrade (I'm quite fond of my current CPU and motherboard setup).

Best,

H

Well I think if they could properly support dual/quad core, that should be enough, since Kentsfield is going to be clocked lower compared to most Core2s and K8Ls will be around the same clock speed as current X2s.

Pshhh, I only spent $5 on my PSU (Yay $50 rebate!), and I'm pretty sure it will handle at least one GTX, maybe two GTS's. Its an "SLI Certified" Ultra xFinity 500W PSU

If 34A on the dual 12v rails isn't enough I would be shocked
I *highly* doubt you would be able to run two GTS' on that PSU.

Also, it'd be interesting to see what the deviation for voltage and amperage is on your +12v rails.
I also had my doubts about running two GTS's, thats why I used the word "maybe" ;)

And FYI, the first thing I did when I got this PSU was check the voltages; it's rock solid, looks cool, and is totaly silent.

When i first saw the 1k Quad, it was love at first site and now , well , i am renewing my vows :D

An idea I just posted at Guru3D that would make sense for those shader clocks:

I think that G80GTX has a "core" clock of 575MHz, and a shader clock of 675MHz (shader delta = 100MHz).

If the shaders are then "double pumped" (ie 2xdata per clock), that gives us 2x675MHz = 1350MHz.

This shader delta also fits for 8800GTS. Given core clock of 500MHz, 100MHz shader delta gives 600MHz shader clock, double pumped to 1200MHz.

Edit: You guys might have thought of this already though.....

The only thing that I'm still thinking of is trying to imagine the specs for the 8600GTS so I can SLI those bad boys up and not need a new PSU :D

Well since the single 8800GTX version is noted as requiring a 450 PSU, the same as a 7950 GX2, a psu handling a quad sli setup should be fine.

Unless the amperage needed is different.

Ahem!
The rumours over at xs have K8L's in the 3.5ghz region. They will be much faster than C2D/kentsfield
There is no reason to dispute this either as the new 90nm 6000+ K8 chips are going to run at 3ghz.

Well, I'm also thinking that we might be a bit too focused on clock speed. I mean, a 2.4GHz C2D blows the doors off a P4 3.4GHz (right?). Changes/developments in CPU design/architecture are also a huge factor, not just clock speed.

Having said that, the question that started this was: Will two 8800GTXs in SLI finally give enough GPU headroom that CPU upgrades will once again start making a substantial difference in gaming performance?

not every upcoming game, but a couple big names, such as Crysis, UT2007, Flight Sim X, Supreme Commander, and Alan Wake are all going to take advantages from Dual core (Alan Wake is already being coded with 5 threads, very sweet for quad core) and are also supposed to see big performance increases

I am sure that you will find out when the GTXs is in reviewers hands.

K8L is too far off at this point, to be able to accurate gauge is shipping clockspeeds. There is also the rumors of K8 chips coming out at 65nm that will be clocked lower then the 90nm parts, up to 2.6GHZ only. We will have to see what happens by the time K8L ships and it's own shipping clockspeeds are like.

In the meantime, what would you like to talk about? More "This R0x0rs!" or "I'll pass."

:D

ummm...

more stuff to talk about in this thread....

are there any more companies coming out with those 5.25 drive bay vid card power thingies?

like i've repetitively said in the last few posts, i'm more concerned about how their new midrange cards will do against the current high-end ones...should prove to be interesting, especially the number of pipes in them. For me, this is make-or-break on whether I stay with the N or run over to the red monster....

Good point, if things follow the same pattern as the 6x00 and 7x00 series, then the 8600GT should be as powerfull as the 7900GTX

Exactly. And then how would they price that? :D

I'm waiting for lotsa good news when those come out...

I It would knock the 7900GT down a notch or fifty.

The upper mid-range cards (6600GT, 7600GT) generally go for between $150 and 200 after prices settle down, so the 7900GT would have to be priced even lower. Helllllooooo SLI for me, looks like it might actualy be worth it if prices go that low :D

Anyone ever see Back to the Future Part 1?

Remember the part where Doc says "1.21 GIGAWATTS!"....

Yeah, that has 8800GTX written all over it.

Energy Fun Fact.
Since their introduction in 1963, over 16 million Easy-Bake Ovens have been sold; each using a 100 watt lightbulb (sometimes two 60 watt bulbs). The total energy consumed by all those ovens? 1.6 BILLION WATTS (i.e. 1.6 GIGAWATTS)! Given a usage of about 1000 kilowatts per month, it would take the average American household over 133 years to consume that much energy!

How many 8800GTX's will it take to bring down your local power-grid? :D
