I was under the impression that the R520 would be out well before the G70...
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=22645

NVIDIA's lack of updates may mean they have something sneaky coming.

Looks like we will get to see a head on battle in time for Christmas.

Maybe we can start a betting pool for release dates :p

If i see another thread like this i will kill myself (unless i get given both cards)

It will just turn down to a Fan-boy war with a few dedicated ppl on each side

Ati look strong

Nvidia are quiet either Very bad or Very good

you are all wrong. secretly, volari is going to release a 10ghz ram octo core card.
It will give you 2fps more than everything else, so it must be the best!

No WAY! nVidia is going to try to compete with the R520?! Didn't see that coming......

LOL- I'm more interested in the hilarious "Vapor-Wars" that are sure to ensue now.

Doofus #1: The R520 and AMR will ownzorz the G70 and SLI! The R520 has Vitamin D and silicon implants!

Doofus #2: Nuh-uh! It's rumored the G70 is Viagara Enhanced with Turbo Thrust technology!

Sometimes all the speculative post makes me wish that ATi and NVIDA would merge, and leave all the trolls "unemployed"...

Terra - But then agin...there would be no competition...*sigh*

yea i'd rather have arguing in forums rather than a sheer monopoly where one company sets the price.

These threads are just bad!!!

Tell you what

ATI AN NVIDIA

send me one of ur next gen cards ;)

But i have a feeling i'd say

"wow looks good an i wont have noticed the 5 Fps DIFFERENCE"

so ti the guy that posted

WE DONT KNOW
I dont know
You dont know
No one knows

We will only know when there both released

funniest post all month. :p

Viagra Enhanced with Turbo Thrust lol amazing.

well people will buy it becasue it has viagra in the name

by people i mean very few (sad minority)

Fool! If you want to put the berries to your favorite game, you've GOT to have Turbo Thrust! It give you the raging tumescence necessary to make those pixels quiver in fear and respect!

Buy it! Now!

Funny though I think this is one of those guys that hated when people even speculated about the R520....
Fact is we dont know whats coming out next.
We have a bunch of Rumors from random but sometimes realiable sources about Atis next gen and only a couple of rumors mainly consisting of codenames and what not about Nvidias next gen.

Oh god, why lord WHY?!?!!?!

I think any posts containing G70 or (woot) R520 should be restricted to the ATI forum or the Nvidia forum

I love how people who hate these threads feel compelled to post in them, further validating the thread. I was merely discussing the release dates for both cards. But I know most of you think that post count = penis size, so you have to respond with your constant bitching

I really don't know about any features for either card, I was only pointing to the Inq article that says the G70 has taped out.

I heard the r520 was supposed to have 24 unlocked pipes with the possibility of 32.

Other than that I hearsd that the S3 Savage will have 64 unlocked pipelines will use sli, will take load off the cpu will be a whole entire pc and even the outside peripherals. The only thing it wont have is a printer (will have a sound system). Price is speculated to be around $100. But no one will buy this because it only supports upto directx 8.1. Its quite sad really.

moron #1 : i heard that g70 has the physics chip built on the PCB and the ram is clocked at a whopping 2ghz... it OWN ATI.. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

I heard the G70 will supply you with unlimted supply of bawls....w00t

i also heard the r520 will supply you with a unlimited supply of redbull....yukie

i also heard there will be a Parahiela 2 coming out. and it has both the AMD and INTEL chips along with the G70 and a r520. and will only cost around 80 dollars. oh and the physic chip to.....lol :D oh oh and Turbo Thrusting V2

I heard the g70 will be dual cores? (and no, this is not sarcasm) hehe

QFT.

gossip is always fun and hearing it from theinq is no different. if you people out there dont like it dont post.

what i really want to know is when does the nda expire.

I think you should be banned...but that doesn't seem to be happening either...;)

The R520 is looking pretty strong. The tile based multi-gpu approach sounds promising, so does SM3 support and up to 32 pipes...however the rumors of Nvidia skipping over nv48 and nv50 and going straight to the G70 have me all curious...

I'm guessing in the end ATi's success will hinge on driver support and availability. The jump from PS2.0 on FP24 to PS3.0 on FP32 and tossing in AMR all at the same time could prove to be a bit much for their driver team...Nvidia has already dealt with these transitions...

Nvidia also has the nforce line of motherboards backing them up...and with SLI, the motherboard and the video cards seem to go hand and hand...I might buy an ATi video card...but they have a hell of a lot of persuading to do before I buy an ATi motherboard over an nforce4...

I'm of the opinion that we'll be more CPU than GPU bound for a little while here. IMO the dual core CPU strategies being pursued by Intel and AMD instead of pure clock cycle ratcheting leads us to a place where game advancement is going to hit a plateau until developers figure out a way to take advantage of multiple threads. Since most games that I play are still essentially single-threaded, I'm feeling a wait-and-see mode coming on. My guess is that it'll be at least another 12 months before I'm looking at a compelling reason to upgrade, so the n70 and r520 might both be a pass for me. The most exciting thing about the new cards will be seeing how they push down the price of the current top of the line cards.

Tossing AMR in to the R520 wont be hard since cards from the 9800s up have support for them allready. Also if this has been their plan for a while (to wait it out with their old core so they could build this core) then they probably have been working on Driver support for a while. Who knows if the Drivers will be any good though.
Just guessing.

excellent point...pretty much the only thing on the horizon that I can imagine needing these new cards i the Unreal 3 engine...and that's just one engine...most games will be based on older engines for the next year at least...

I know that it's the competition, but read the interview at http://www.penstarsys.com/editor/tech/graphics/nvidia/sli_inter/index.html

The arguments about dropping pursuit of Supertiling related to it not scaling geometery processing is certainly technically valid. The other portion about entire texture fetches for both boards is another point and then finally, not having a bridge results in more data use of the PCI-E bus. May not seem like a big deal, but since supertiling requires twice the texture data transfer and other related geometery transferes, this will become self-choking as the capabilities of the cards and games increase.

Could all be obfuscation, but it bares a read. Guess we'll need to actually see the AMR or MVP or whatever in action along with ATI's explanations before this is put to rest.

One more point, nVIDIA has the patents on the Alternate Frame Rendering (AMR) and Split Frame Rendering (SFR) so it left Supertiling as the only game in town for ATI to utilize. The legal ramifications for ATI may have resulted in a solution that doesn't compete as well, but it's the only approach they have left to them.

Better to have something than nothing and then use marketing hype to encourage everyone to think it's all that. The arguments could be directed to nVIDIA as well, but they were able to patent those two key methods first, after all it's all about intellectual property rights right? (At least SCO thinks so).

I agree with the above that it feels like a plateau is coming up. However, with the xbox Next having a graphics card 1 generation ahead of the r520, it seems like the PC is going to have to catch up sooner than later. I really wouldnt mind not having to upgrade for awhile, I just dont see that happening. IF the xbox Next has the R500, and it is not scaled back or really CPU bound, then I think it will be an amazing piece of machinery for gaming and will make me want to hang myself for going with the most insane SLI setup. But then again I have been enjoying SLI for months now.

Linkage? Searching isn't working for me :(.

Thanks... I actually found a large thread about the PPU itself, but didn't catch that one :).

I read that...interesting stuff...

I'm guessing nvidia's implementation will turn out to be a little more efficient...I guess it all depends on how fast a single r520 is vs a single G70...ATi might be able to make up for AMR inefficiency with a faster cards...

I wish we knew something...hell...ANYTHING about G70 at this point...we don't even really know what process it's being manufactured on...I'm hoping nvidia took a page out of ATi's book and just doubled the number of pipelines and worked on speed instead of adding a butt ton more features...but we shall see...

IMHO, it will be difficult for nvidia to keep up during the next round, similar to what Ati is trying to do now. FX architecture sucked ballzorz, so nvidia dropped it and hit a home run with the 6xxx. Ati thought, hrm, 9700 was pretty good, and the 9800 we made out of it was pretty good, so lets make x800 out of 9800, and then redo everything for R5xx. I bet nv48 comes out this summer, with higher clocked speeds (ala x850), but can't compete with R500. I don't think going straight to G70 or whatever makes much sense. However, the whole multi-gpu battle will be very interesting. I too am interested to see if ATi's implementation will be able to compete with SLI'd nv48.

Super tiling has never been seen yet outside of ATI development crew behind closed doors. I seriously would not take the word of an nvidia employee to heart. Truth is since its all through drivers no one has any idea how well ATI will scale ballance over each card. Not to mention through ATI MVP an X850 and X900 can be used in conjunction with eachother and work through AMR to run off both cards. While the faster card would scale down, it still a much nicer way to run dual cards without having the pressure to get exact same bios and manufacturer since thats the limitation to having the cards talk to eachother through a seperate link. To me, each GPU doing every other tile seems like a very even way to split the load.

As far as the Xbox2 being ahead of computers being a bad thing. Um why? First of all its not. Its scheduled release isnt until the late fall, not the spring. Not to mention its technology has to last and power games for at least 3-5 years without hardware upgrades. Its nice that its so powerful. Better the newest tech then something aged a year ago. Even the Xbox 1 still impresses with graphics and level design considering what its operating under. Theres no telling what the Xbox 2 will do. Whos the moron who started the R500 is not an R520 tech rumor? Its totally bogus and apparently people started to believe it. The R500 is a console version of the R520, end story. They did not leap a year and half ahead of time for a console and pull something out of the future.

NV48 is the codename for the NV40 under PCIExpress, its already out. You're graphics knowledge seems a little dated. The current project in works is the G70, Nvidia completely droped the "NV" name at the start of a chip codename, and either a refresh or something else called the G80 due out in the fall.

SFR and AFR are simply another way of doing it. Its not even the same as the Voodoo SLI technology in terms of how it works. ATI has been using tiling for a few years, and it only makes sence they'd jump to it to fight SLI since they already have some knowledge of it under their belt. Its logic, not the "last thing they could use" type deal. Im sure if they did a few years research and wasted all that time, they could find a different way to do it so simuliar to SLI that it would give equal results. Something like AMD's HT that manipulates programs to use it like Intels though they are actually different. But they dont want to wait a few years.

Console have the advantage that the devloper knows what he's going to be using, knows the limitations for everyone and things like that. So they can push strong points easier and not have to worry about know right away their limits of the hardware to a certain point. The Xbox 360 looks very promissing, I personally think it'll stay with PC's for about 2 years then start falling behind them, its just the natural order of things.

Please read all of the article before you make wrong comments:

A common misconception about SLI is that the BIOS revision has to be identical between the cards. This is not true. A manufacturer can rev the BIOS without affecting SLI. However, the two cards do currently need to be identical models from the same manufacturer. With the majority of SKUs lasting on shelves for over a year, often much longer, SLI offers a strong path for upgradeability. We do however suggest that you check with the manufacturer about each particular SKU that you are considering.

I dont get it, your quote even says that "However, the two cards do currently need to be identicals from the same manufacturer". Very unclear statement, and it says the opposite of what the one before it said?

It means that you can't mix a 6800GT and a 6800Ultra, even if from same manufactor...

Terra - Quite simple...
