yeah, san diego will definitly run a lot cooler than the clawhammer at a given voltage and mhz, plus, you probably won't need quite as much voltage, bring down temps a bit more

And how is Scali-bashing any better than Winchester-bashing (although I didn't actually bash, I just stated some facts)?
Grow up people, you guys piss me off.
So many people who don't even really understand what I said (and what I didn't say)... And who feel like just lashing out in my general direction for no other reason than that they're too pathetic to handle some less-than-positive news from their favourite CPU manufacturer.
Really, stfu already, all of you!

I wouldn't count on it.CCUABIDExORxDIE said:i expect it to be that way with newark. they will be a mobile surprise, and when they come out, a few chosen people will discover how great they are for 754, and youll get hords coming back here for 3ghz chips with minimal effort, i hope![]()

they used too. with E3 and E4, (Venice and San Diego) teh memory controller ahs been updated and you can run 4 double sided dimms at DDR400bob said:Whats the predicted price of the FX-57? And how about the memory? Ive been told A64s run at 333mhz with using more than two slots.
After reading 7 pages of bitching and questions, I cant remember if its been answered or not.
I agreeTheAcorn said:Interesting marketing spin. Post title: "OMG! FX-xx @ 3.6 ghz!" would be quite a marketing coup for AMD in the enthusiast market. Remember the Athlon XP-M OCing (I'm still doing it) when people found out about that? I bet there are more XP-Ms in Desktops than there are in laptops!

Speed binned? Hahahaa. No, you got it wrong. They're mobiles, so they're binned for thermal performance instead. Transistors that have lower switching rate, typically run cooler. So, basically they would try to pick that slowest chip that can run X.X GHz, and sell it as a mobile.(cf)Eclipse said:why not? at the moment, it appears to be a speed binned san diego. it should clock quite well.![]()
Nope. There can only be one flagship CPU.(cf)Eclipse said:well the 130nm fx-55 can coexist with the 90nm fx-57![]()

theyre not speedbinned, theyre voltage binned. since they can run at such low voltages, they often can overclock better with more voltage - rather than a chip that takes .2v more to get the same stock clock speed.(cf)Eclipse said:explain the athlon xp mobile then
tsuehpsyde, i hope you're right. plus, it kinda makes sense.![]()
San Diego is a 90nm ClawHammer. Much like Winchester/Venice is a 90nm version of the NewCastle. Sure, there were some tweaks made along the way, some for better - some for worse, but it's still essentially the same core. Moreover, not only it doesn't make any sense for AMD to have to flagship chips at once (neither AMD nor Intel have done that recently, for a good reason, too) but it doesn't make any sense to keep manufacturing what's basically the same core on a larger fab. Not only it takes up a production line, but the bigger dies also cost more. And did I mention they're essentially the same thing? Besides, the new San Diego cores will not only be used for the FX-57, I'm sure. What about all those that don't make the bin for 2.8GHz? Throw them away? No, they can still be used in other CPU's, such as the 4000+, or whatnot.tsuehpsyde said:Well my basic point is this:
If they evolve to the next series, it's my idea (possibly incorrect) that the older FX's aren't made anymore....they just cycle out. Reguardless, why would they sell an FX-55 without SSE3 and running 130nm when they can pay a little more for 200 more MHz stock, 90nm which is cooler, and SSE3...plus a new core (San Diego). To be it only makes sense they at LEAST make a 90nm claw, or possibly a San Diego FX-55.....if not, why the hell even mention it in the press release ya know?
The AthlonXP-M was not a true mobile effort by AMD. True, they did bin them at X.XGHz at a preset voltage, that just so happens to be lower than the desktop parts. So you get realyively low-end mobile parts that can potentially be as good (or even better) than high-end desktop couterparts, such as the 3200+. And it even was the same way with the mobile Athlon64 line. No optimizations were made, those are basically just desktop CPUs that passed the bin for a lower voltage. Minus the heatspreader, but that doesn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things.(cf)Eclipse said:explain the athlon xp mobile then

the 57, 4000+ and 3700+ are san diego.iddqd said:Besides, the new San Diego cores will not only be used for the FX-57, I'm sure. What about all those that don't make the bin for 2.8GHz? Throw them away? No, they can still be used in other CPU's, such as the 4000+, or whatnot.
yeah, i'm aware of that. i'm just trying to convince myself that amd won't use the turion based cores that need more voltage. and yes, the name really does suck. oh welliddqd said:However, with AMD's new efforts to bring a 'true' mobile architecture, the Turion (did I mention I din't like the name?), ... anyway, AMD is really trying to cut down on power consumption and thermal output. Although the decided to still use the AMD64 architecture (it's much better suited for mobility than Intel's NetBurst, so they don't really need anything drastically different), it's not enough to just bin the chips at lower voltage anymore. They have made some optimizations, and although all the optimizations are transistor-level only (such as using SOI as opposed to SSOI, for one) there's also a bin for those cores which can just barely run their specified frequency at stock.
oh right. i wonder if those will prove to be better overclockers? i doubt it though...(cf)Eclipse said:lithium, don't forget the 512kb san diego, 3500+![]()
