FX-57 Why Not Faster?

I must say this is a very intresting topic.
Scali and eclipse I enjoyed (sounding like a nerd I know I know) all of your posts and the good information in them. In my opinion Scali calling it a failure is a bit harsh more so just a slightly flawed proc is what I feel the Winchester is.

tsuehpsyde, i'm letting you know whenever i get in a debate and need some help now. you do a much better job keeping level-headed than i :p

i recall a comment about problems with the winchester's memory controller being pointed out earlier in the thread. it seems to be hit and miss, but a lot of them do quite well... far better than the early 130nm K8's, that's for sure.
(i would know. i'm a victim of the early memory controller. i hit s pretty hard limit at 245-250mhz with two sticks of double sided in)

{NG}Fidel: thanks :D
i try to back up my posts with useful and related information. sometimes it gets disproven, sometimes it doesn't. though often it gets ignored by many (or so it seems). i give you kudos to actually making sense of it all :p

It is a new core... It has added SSE3, and a modified memory controller.
What you mean is called 'stepping'... That's different from new cores.
i know what a stepping is, and this is more or less a stepping - its not like completly fabricated a new core like intel did with the p4 - they just took what they had a tweaked it a little, which is what i was getting at. youre making it sound theyre pouring millions upon millions into R&D in order to come up wtih a completly new super duper core because winchester was just an absoute flop - which it wasnt. im running one now, and its awesome, to say teh least - it only cost me 190 bucks, and it gives me pretty damn near FX-55 performance at 305x8

Thanks eclipse :p Glad to help out, let me know. :D

So, what's this about a 90nm FX-55 opposed to an FX-57 release? It snuck in here in the midst of all this back-and-forth menagerie. I'm seriously debating a rebuild on an FX-57, but maybe a 90nm FX-55 would work as well...just want something that'll last a bit longer than my current rig, plus I might wanna go SLI or AMR. Info?

Funny, since that was actually a response, or rather a confirmation, of what others had already said previously.

Okay, I'm pulling a Scali on this as it's a double post, but I don't want it lost in the edit. How exactly was that what others had already said previously? Rewind back to page one and see what all was said before you. This thread was in bright spirits until the dark clouds formed and you piped in with your two cents.

Not all core-changes have to be as big as the one from Northwood to Prescott.
From PPro to PII was a core-change, and basically that was just adding MMX.
From PII to PIII was a core-change, basically just adding SSE.
From Thunderbird to Palomino... again only SSE.

You get the idea :)

youre making it sound theyre pouring millions upon millions into R&D in order to come up wtih a completly new super duper core because winchester was just an absoute flop - which it wasnt.

It's mostly in the verification and changing the masks and such for production, as I said before.
Even though you only modify a little, you still have to be 100% sure that the core still works properly (apparently AMD even slipped a bit with the memory controllers).

im running one now, and its awesome, to say teh least - it only cost me 190 bucks, and it gives me pretty damn near FX-55 performance at 305x8

Read what I say more closely. I said it's bad for AMD, not for customers. They get a CPU with good price/performance. But it's not bringing in the big bucks for AMD.

I basically responded to your opening post:

The thing I personally don't understand is why they would engineer a CPU with such great flexability (upwards multiplier as well), but yet don't put it to use? I mean, why not release the FX-57 as an even 3GHz processor, which I'm sure wouldn't be hard to do with the new 90nm core, improved SSoI implementation after getting to know it well on the FX-55, and other factors....just kinda seems stupid to sit on their hands when Intel is kinda running outta tricks atm, and a 3 GHz or even 3.2GHz if their technology warrented those speeds would be a SWIFT kick in the groin to their immediate competition (on the high end market anyway).

I thought you were getting at the same issues that I was... some technical problems with running their Winchester at high clockspeeds.

Whoa, that overclocked P-M is kicking some derriere!
Thats why, all Intel has to do is release a Dual Core 3Ghz per core Pentium M for the desktop and their problems will be solved for a while :)

But that wont happen, sigh

phase change: the solution to your overclocking setbacks :D

It does seem to eliminate the need for a really expensive HSF and a lot of fans  ;)

You still need fans to cool down the OTHER components (like RAM @ DDR600 :D) that are getting raped aside from the FX itself. :p

active cooling via extremely cold motherboards! :D

though yeah, airflow is still key. i'm gonna have a fun time trying to figure out how to replace half of the ram cooling that my zalman provides now when i go WC. (got a slot blower too, but it doesn't have enough coverage)

this is also way off-topic  :p

This isn't off topic, it involves raping an FX series CPU.....which is in the title. Now Winchester bashing, is not.

indeed you are right.

though, i wonder how long it'll take the 90nm fx-55 to hit 4ghz. i have a feeling cent might be able to pull it off for us :D

Well, the 4GHz mark has been tapped already over at XS....but a 4GHz chip on some good cooling being the norm would be uber sexy. :D Then Maybe I could hit 3.4GHz on air.....lord I'd fall in love.

yup, that's kinda what i was referring to. took a while for a good enough fx-55 to be tested that can hit 4ghz. i'm thinking within 2-3 weeks, we'll have a few of the hardcore guys with cascade and vapo over the magical 4 mark ;)

One can’t deny the cool factor involved, it just is. What however are we going to do for subsystems to keep up with all that power? ;)

some of you people (you know who you are) are just like a bunch of old ladies, arguing over stupid crap.

Who honestly cares what the 3rd Quarter profit margin was? WFT does that have to do with anything? Does AMD-Bashing cause Erectile dysfuctionality?

Save it for the soapbox. I will be sure to mail out johnsons no-tears shampoo... :)

Im still confused on how the winchester series was a compete faliure. For being a faliure, it sure does take on a load like farcry. Its a low cost, low(er) power, budget cpu.

1. It doesnt make my room hot
2. the 3000+ is 154$ at newegg
3. It works good enough for me not to bitch about it like an old lady playing card games

damn you! i was about to say that :( :p

how about it makes my chest hair dissapear?! or.. or.. yeah. i'll shut up now. i'm acting like a wee kid with a lollipop

You mean you aren't? There go my hopes and dreams. :p

but wait. i'm an old lady. i shouldn't have a penis or chest hair?!

:D
please, make it stop! this is going way too far!!! hahaha. this is definitly off topic. any way to bring it back to the fx-55?

i heard old women have quite hair chests

Yep, subsystems gotta keep up with it. Memory @ least 309 X 11 multi.. ;)

heh, i thought your tccd could do ~338mhz? :D

as an interesting note: 309*13 would get you just over the 4ghz mark. i have great expectations from you ;)

Actually, cpu and mem. are ok. The problem is single phase can't sustain the heat load. Evaporator temp. went up to -36C(from -50 idle) or around +4C cpu core temp. With those cascade guys ist a different story.. :D Hopefully those new san diego core will have less default voltage/load...compared to clawhammer..
