Futuremark, the developer of the world’s most popular benchmarking software, today announced 3DMark® 11, the latest version of their industry standard benchmark for real-time 3D graphics. Designed to measure the performance of DirectX 11 gaming PCs, 3DMark 11 uses a native DirectX 11 engine created in-house. To accompany the announcement Futuremark has released a trailer and screenshots taken from a 3DMark 11 tech demo called "Deep Sea".

Deep Sea is a demonstration of DirectX 11 technologies created using an early development build of the 3DMark 11 engine. The Deep Sea trailer features submersibles exploring the sea floor. Volumetric lighting illuminates the seabed with tessellation used to add rich detail to the rock, coral and manmade structures. Post processing delivers depth of field and other lens effects. The music is an original composition.

Haha. So you'll likely have to pay for it... and on top of that you have to be fed advertising too.

Good o'l Futuremark.

Ever since you had to pay to use Vantage, I stopped caring.

So before the end of 2010 we'll definitely know whether nvidia or ati have the best dx11 cards, woohoo!

While it may push cards very hard, 3DMark has never been an "across the board" metric for in-game performance since developers use different engines and programming techniques. At best it's a very rough metric used for relative performance, stress testing, and for WR overclocking attempts.

This. I can't believe they want consumers who just want to run a quick test to pay for the thing.

Make reviewers buy a copy. Make people who benchmark like mad trying to beat their peers buy a copy. But don't make everyone else pay for a quick and convenient performance check.

Soz i was joking, maybe i need to use more smileys x

no...really!??

Exactly, I liked their old model. I wouldn't even mind it if they put ads everywhere in the whole thing (as it looks like they've done with MSI here). However, when I paid $7 for Vantage, and all it did was allow me to run the same test more than once without enabling any extra options, I was disappointed (paid in advance, so I didn't have the breakdown to read, although I probably should have done better research anyway).

Amazingly talent art team wasted
I remember running 3DMark05 when it first came out and thinking "WOW." The last two releases haven't been as impressive (meaning '06, and Vantage), maybe due to resolution restrictions, but that video of '11 looked amazing. Personally, I like running benchmarks just to see something like that in motion, irrespective of the score.

Just my opinion, but it should be completely free. They should also not take money from NV or AMD if they want a "fair" "benchmark", just my personal opinion.

That said, I'll take a look at it to see if it might be useful in stress testing or something.

Futuremark should never be used to compare Nvidia VS ATI. Great for comparing your own benchmarks, or even similar systems to see how you are doing.

Vantage was a joke. Character animations were horrible, graphics across the board were sub-par. Unacceptable for a $20 benchmark when there are free options out there.

cool graphics but what's with the sound lol...

Wow. It sounds like the "Pacific" and "Band Of Brothers" folks did the music :)

I think I'm more interested in Crysis 2, because with that you at least get a game with your bench-mark software.

Wow. That is awesome. I love the tessellation, I can't wait for that level of detail to start showing up in games!

Guys, calm down on the "Vantage asked for money" thing. Futuremark has listened.

Quoting from the press kit fact sheet;

3DMark 11 will be offered in a range of editions to meet the different needs of consumers such as gamers and hardware enthusiasts and those of commercial business users, such as hardware manufacturers. The cost of each edition will be set individually and these prices will be announced at a later date. A free edition that allows unlimited runs will be available.

and

The MSI logo placement within the Deep Sea tech demo is a special sponsorship arrangement between MSI and Futuremark. Advertising placements ensure that Futuremark can offer a free edition of the benchmark alongside the paid editions.

Think 3DMark06, pretty much the same thing. Made possible by sponsorship deals.

Hey guys, 3DMark 11 is a great application that reminds you what your PC could be doing, if it wasn't for those darn consoles.

Maybe after the next round of consoles come out, which may be some years yet from the sound of it. :(

QFT.

This simulation is highly irregular. I see no tar balls or oil blobs. Maybe those will be added in DX12?

I think it would be better said like this...

So before the end of 2010 we'll definitly know whether nVidia or ATi paid the most $$$ to Futuremark...

"Post Processing" what exactly is that? its said in the preview that it used it.

I would just have to say, Damn, that looks absolutely amazing. but as with 06 I will probably not get a single FPS with some of the tests.

As for the MSI adds, I think they were tastefully added, how many blimps do you see flying around w/ blank sides. As long as there placed properly I don't mind especially if it reduces my cost in the end or allows it to be free.

Yah, me too. But I'm sure you do care about some minimum level right? ;)

3dmark is still relevant?

why use synthetic benchmarks, they make no sense at all. Specially when companies optimize their drivers for the benchmarks. WTF? Like I want more fps on a benchmark then a game.

i thought in vantage they had a free version, but you could only run it once or twice?

3dmark is more about comparing your system to others, raw power and numbers.

or for your own system, say you bench alot, it gives you an idea of performance vs the tweaks you have done.

it has no value on real world usage, and that is the problem, too many people think cause they have some high 3dmark score their computer is best, yet we have all seen so many times, once you play games and such, it lies.

The hilarious part is back when I was a reviewer I got 3DMark2001 and 2003 for free to use in reviews LOL.
