Hey Guys,

My friend was building his pc and was having some troubles and asked me to come over to help. When i got there i noticed that he plugged a 6pin PCI-E cable into the 8 pin atx power connector on the motherboard. Now my question is do you think he fried the Motherboard or the CPU?

the system should of never booted due to lack of power.. you tried plugging the 8 pin in to see if it works still?

If plugged in correctly and still doesn't work then it definity fried stuff start checking the MB first then the cpu then the ram. Also, make sure the psu is still ok.

well he had the wrong power supply so i am gonna plug the new one into when he brings me the computer. Hopefully nothing got fired, will keep everyone updated.

yeah nothing should of got fried.. you can also buy an 8 pin converter to convert one of the pci-e plugs into an 8 pin plug..

Even if you only have a 4 pin ATX power connector, you should be able to just put that in and test it. I don't know of any board that would NEED 8-pin ATX power to run a desktop CPU.

I made a mistake last Friday night that I bought from someone on the forum. I saw that it had an 8 pin power connector on the motherboard (had never seen one before). For some reason I wasn't thinking and plugged the 8 pin pci-e power connector in. It didn't power on. After I got to looking at the power supply box that I still had laying around from December, I saw that there were 2 4-pin connectors to make the 8. After I plugged that in, everything powered up fine. I doubt that in his case, that plugged the wrong connector had anything to do with his problem either.

once i had an ASUS motherboard. 8 pin with the 4 pin cap on it. i thought hmm... i can put 4 pin instead of 8. plugged in and try to started it did boot up to work. so i took the cap off and plug in the 8 pin. still, it worked. so i dont think he fried it. unless he got a DOA item.

At least Asus comes like this and what you are saying is true, but not what the OP did. He plugged the PCI-E power cable into the MB 8 pin power slot. However, Both cables although are for different uses are supplies with a 12v connection unless there was a short, it should be OK.
