Does anyone else remember playing these?

Pretty long time ago, but in all honesty, now that I look back, the games were absolutely amazing..

I didn't play Freespace back in the day, but played Descent. Just grabbed Freespace 2 from ebay and going through it now. :D

The Freespace series is in my top half-dozen favorite games ever made. Just found my copy of FS2 yesterday and was ecstatic. Only problem is I don't have a joystick anymore.

Must scan Sathanas... eliminate forward beam cannons...

The Freespace series holds a permanent spot in my top 10 all time games. The story... the combat... it was all pretty much flawless.

I would love to know what happens to the Terran/Vadusan Alliance after the Shivans caused that supernova... and what happened to Admiral Bosch... and if the Alliance was able to duplicate the Ancient's subspace portal technology so they can reopen the portal to Earth.

Man I want more Freespace!

Why has this genre died? We need more games like these!

Yeah , Freespace 2 was excellent! As for the Dead Genre I have no idea, its a shame, they need to come out with a game like Freespace and make it a Multiplayer deathmatch or domination game, with 64 players, that would be awesome!.

freespace 2. best game of its kind ever created. nothing comes close. ty for this post i now need to buy a joystick.

The FPS Killed it.

For the longest time, Space Sims were the bread and butter of PC Gaming. Add to that the "Star Wars" Generation that dreamed of flying X-Wings or space fighters, it all added up to a lot of interest.

Fast Forward to today, Most kids dont like Sci-Fi in any way, shape or form. (Most PC nuts like us still do).. So the genre doesnt have a wide audience any longer. Couple that with the need for a Joystick, and an array of Failed titles in recent years, (Like Darkstar One, X2, X3, Starlancer...) and you have the demise of the Space Sim.

It really sucks..

Makes me wonder what a grass-roots movement of talented people could do. Could lovers of the Space Combat Sim genre create a game good enough to get published and sell enough copies to ressurect the genre?

Anything is possible..

Getting commitment to do it is tough though..

Realistically, you would probably need $10m+ and a Professional Staff to even begin to field a title and market it enough to even slightly re-ignite the genre.

That's sad because FPS's are completely different from these things. I'd go as far as saying that this is my strong, close second favorite genre to FPS easily.

Projects like the Beyond the Red Line total conversion mod for FS2, and the Infinity engine with real-time orbital/atmospheric transitions, are certainly making efforts. But as you say, could a game like BTRL or one based on the Infinity engine sell well enough...

I remember playing FS2 on my Nvidia tnt2. Awesome game. I remember installing the hi-rez texture pack that was an option in the game if the computer can handle it and being blown away from the graphics. Good times.

QFT. I think the only people that would buy a space sim would be the older PC gaming crowd that experienced games like X-Wing v TIE Fighter, Wing Commander, Descent, Independence War and Elite...

The problem is that games are made by for-profit corporations, for the most part. If Space Sims has a large audience thats where they would go. However most decent flight sims of any type require more patience and concentration than most people playing on their couches are willing. It really isn't FPS fault. :(

My friend that used to work in EA Vancouver last year, told me that they were looking into developing a new game in WingCommander franchise. We had disguessions on what great ideas could make into the game. Later, he told me EA scrapped the idea because the project's scope will be too large, ambitious, and will cost too much.

Another reason to hate EA.

So you hate EA, and English. :D

I'm just playing with you. :)

Ah yes, another good independent project...Newtonian physics, very challenging! I haven't played it in years...I should pull it back out now that I have rudder pedals too.

B5:IFH is pretty good, yes. It definitely gets the 'realism' of the series down...and navigating in hyperspace...*shudders* Man, that SUCKS.

But for totally nailing the look of the series it is based on, I'll have to point to 'Beyond the Red Line'. Same engine, but it totally POUNDS HOME the feel of the new BSG series. From the interface, to the audio, to the 'feel'. Fantastic job.

Freespace2 one of the 10 greatest PC games of all time

right up there with System Shock 2

I don't know how you can say X3 was a failure since it has a huge community. I have been playing it since it came out. Plus there is an expansion that will be out later this year.

X3 agreed, define failure. if by failure you mean that the game is so big and long that i played it for fun and for story for days and couldn't finish it, so my $40 dollars stretched to .25 an hour, which is very good value, then yes, it is a failure.

otherwise i would say that its one of the best bang for buck games out there.
not to mention the most beautiful space sim in ages.
and did i mention that the 2.0 edition removes copy protection. FTW!

Totally agree...I miss the days when I was involved with the project. A very competent collection of talent that, depending where they go from there, will make some waves in the mainstream industry some day!

I loved Freespace2. I hate the fact that the genre is nearly dead. All of my best memories when I was younger were spent playing Wing Commander, Privateer and other space genre games.

Right now my favorite time is spend playing Freelancer. Actually some friends and I made a mod for it...
http://www.moddb.com/mods/shattered-worlds We have a server with a decent sized community too. Last Sunday there were 52 people on the server. Not too shabby considering the mod has only been out for 2 weeks or so.

i will tell u how good FS2 was.. i hate space combat games... and Fs2 made me go out and buy a flight stick

I have Freespace I in shrink wrap still. Everytime I open my CD drawer I think to myself wow I should really play that game someday.

Privateer and Righteous Fire are still my most favorite games. I liked the Wing Commander and Tie Fighter series also, but... several months ago I replayed Privateer with a version someone re-wrote to work with newer systems, and I got this nostalgic chill down my spine when it fired up and the music started playing.

Some great space shooters came out back in the day, but Freespace 2 is still my favorite. The graphics still look amazing to me to this day, especially when capital ships are involved and flak cannons and beams are going off.

I wish Volition would make a new one, but it isn't where the money is, and I'd bet most of the development staff is no longer even there.

Yeah, I agree that it's up there with some of the best PC games of all time, but you know what I find funny?

No review site I've seen has listed it up there.
