Damn, you could rent to space it that thing!!

That solidworks image doesn't really show it to scale or something, it is a bit out of proportion I think. When you look at the images below, you can see it a bit better, but will need to visualize it together as one unit.

This is the Extended U2-UFO, it is 18" wide and 24" long. The front will flip 180 degrees to allow the top to be the 3x 120mm fan holes. This will allow for MB air cooling for all the parts not water cooled (i.e. RAM) and lighting from the red LED's in the fans.

u2ufo.jpg

This is the waterbarrel that will attachor be under the U2UFO, it also is 18" x 24". This is the portion that will be vinyl wrapped. The sides will be solid and only the front to back 9x120mm fans will be used, the rest will be to containthe sound, etc. This is basically a nice wind tunnel going to be happening here.

Damn, looking forward to this build :)

That's ~46cm x 61cm (times two with extension) for us metric users. Doesn't sound too big.

That's ~46cm x 61cm (times two with extension) for us metric users. Doesn't sound too big.

For us folks here in the US, the cases are both 18" wide x 24" long and 18" high. That is as you stated to the metric users, 46cm wide x 61cm long/deep, and 46cm high.

So if you look at them both together as one unit, now we are talking the following:
WIDTH: 18 Inches / 46cm
LENGTH/DEPTH: 24 Inches / 61cm
HEIGHT: 36 Inches or 3 Feet / 123cm

So it will be kind of tall. Sitting next to Frank's current case, the Corsair 800D, this case would be exactly 12" or 1 ft taller than the 800D case. However length would be exactly the same as the 800D. In width though, this new case will give us an additional 9" in width over the 800D.

123cm can't be right. Should be more like 46cm + 46cm +casters (if you're using).

Right you are - its 92cm w/o feet. I actually am using feet on this case as opposed to the casters many people chose. I do not want it rolling around. Last thing I need is Frank to think he is mobile at the same time of becoming self aware, that would be tragic. :D

These are the ones I have in hand atm to use.

So far we are making progress, though slowly. I just sold the Silverstone 1500W PSU which brings me about $200 shy from what I need to get the Watercool order done. So I have upped the efforts on my end, listed the GTX 465 and the GTX 580 on Amazon and EVGA’s forum for sale. They were on [H] and eBay, but eBay is basically costing me money with no results, so I took them off there.

In the meantime while we wait for the Mountain Mods case to be done and sent and me to get that final order done at Watercool, I figured I would share a couple t-shirt images with you. My mother-in-law which I help out when it comes to her PC bought me a couple t-shirts, with my wife’s input of course. These are what they chose – how appropriate – lol.

I have some more parts inbound from PPCS and Amazon as well. I should go ahead and start taking pic’s of all the new goodies I am stacking in the cabinet waiting for the new case.

OHHH – good news, when I go to mod the desk and move the office around – the black shag carpet is OUTTA HERE! Rugs.com sent me this “one day only 50% off w/Free Shipping Sale” Email and I figured why not, so I went searching, found the right size of a grey toned indoor/outdoor carpet for < $200 at a 9’x12’ size and free shipping – DONE! So I am getting rid of that nightmare carpet finally as well – “party!” no more black fuzzies everywhere. Looks like the desk mod and the office change is going to occur before the case mod and the build happens.

I am glad you went with the extended UFO. The solidworks image looks like the standard and for all the gear you have in there it is not enough room. I've got a standard UFO that I used for years which housed two full loops. It worked and looked great but it was super crowded in there with all the cabling and tubing. Hopefully they get it to you sooner than 4-6 weeks. Start a poll here or something to show them how many people are following the build. ;)

Well I am hoping the extended U2UFO AND the Water Barrel 24 will house the beast Frank is and all that he contains, that is the plan at least. How do you like your UFO? Like in quality, ease of building in, etc?

As it stands, I have one custom panel being modded at MM and that is in the Water Barrel back side where the MORA3 is being mounted internally. The rest is pretty much standard as I conceeded on the wiring going on on the left or right of the case and went back to the standard case config. So the wait is more than likely just being one of many in queue to get that done. Then I have two side panels being etched with "Frank N SteinPC" as well. Not that the etching would take forever, its again just something that has to be done in queue, I am sure there are others out there waiting as impatiently as I am for their stuff as well.

lol, that would be interesting to know how many people are lurking & partcipating wouldn't it? I wonder how I would do that much less word it..............

UPDATE:
So I figured I would pass along the "Post a poll" suggestion to see what weight it would have @ MM, and this was the reply:

I’m glad to hear there is anticipation for the parts to complete. We are at the mercy of production run time constraints at this point. ........... All takes a bit of time. Your custom part is being run simultaneously with another 1000 parts or so. Custom parts do take precedence in the line, but usually they don’t complete any sooner (depending on finish) than the other parts. If they do it’s only by a few days.

So, for now it’s just watching the paint dry, sorry [H] viewers

I took out the reasons given, but basically it makes sense there are just things that takes time. I know many of us have grown up in an instant society and there are always ways to get it faster, quicker and more efficiently. This however isn't one of those times and I have to just sit down, and watch the paint dry till it happens - or do I?

I just got a new cabinet and shelf in today. The new area rug should be arriving this week as well. Looks like the office is getting changed, the desk modded, and reconfigured before the case. However at least the office will be ready to receive the new case once it arives and I can quit trying to reposition this dang board that is sitting on top of the keyboard tray atm.

The build quality is good. They don't do a nice polish around the edges of the fan holes at least not on mine. Mine is not painted, just the bare aluminum but maybe they prep them a bit more when painted.

The extended should be great to build in. The extra 6" between the end of the motherboard tray and the 5.25" bays will be a Godsend. Plus you have the waterbarrel so space won't be an issue at all. The regular is a bit to cramped for the setup I had and cable management is always a challenge in these cases. It can be made to look nice and if you don't have a windowed panel on one side it's not an issue. I had windows on both sides and had to get creative with some of the cable runs.

Overall very nice cases and built to last.

Buy yourself a nicer desk.
Tons of top and size options and made in the USA.
That will come in time, probably after my next move, for now the $$ goes to electronics, the desk has a tad more life left in it I think. My wife wants to move, so if I were to build a new desk, that would signal I am digging in - lol.

I certainly appreciate you giving me feedback on it and the things that will make this extended better in terms of build. I understand about the clear panels on both sides, I also chose the same, but intentionally did knowing I was going to have to be creative and very clean on my wiring. I plan on doing more of the same flat sewn cable runs I did before, just neater, tighter, and cleaner than before. What I see happening is everything gets put in, I get it all working, then I start working each cable set one by one and replacing them with custom sewn in runs until I am done with the entiure machine, like I did Frank the last time. Because I need the machine up and running for work, I have to do the "functional before beautification" thing. So yeah, about to learn creative cabling, I cannot wait. The 800D allowed me to hide ugly, this is in your face exposed, so its going to force me to up my game on these cables. That is why I say this will be more of an epic build than the last, not just the case and the things I plan for visuals, but the wiring in and of itself should be a notch above as well.

This build is so freaking badass.
I sure hope so once it gets going, still watching paint dry, sitting in the corner with Wra81th fidgeting about now......

UPDATE: Watercool invoice was paid, so we should see things coming together in the next few weeks.

Still needing to sell gear to pay the CC the Watercool invoice was paid with and for those notorious "Oh yeah I need some X" items that always add another $200-300 to any build. I figure those will come in time as will the sale of some gear. I fear I am trying to move good gear at good prices at the wrong time of the year when most are getting over the Holiday financial impacts. SO I see Februrary being a better month for most and for selling this stuff I have, which would be still in time to do what I need to do.

So on with the build, I am getting tired of seeing 75c-89c temps on these GTX 680's!

I'm gonna have to subscribe now..

Very eager to see how this build develops.

As we all are - I am like reliving a nightmare from my Army days I think - Hurry up and wait - OMG , please no I don't wanna................but alas, it is what it is and I must just go fidget in the corner with others until the case and the Watercool parts arrive.

Ahh ty - we also love new folks participating at times as well, please feel to post at will :D

So in the anticipation and need to do something - I took some pictures to show the items I previously posted as being ordered is here, staged and waiting to go........

What are you doing as far as PSU's go and sleeving? I see some phobya extensions, but i must say, the extensions are awful when comparing them to the real deal. The cable's are way to stiff for me out of the box. I had to keep the 24 pin folded for a week to get it in the position i wanted. Keep in mind, i got bitfenix sleeving, so maybe you'res are different.

I am actually contimplating sending those fan extension things back. I thought I would save some time, but I I am doing all the cables custom, I decided to order enough fan Male connectors that I can create a single rail run from the PSU to the two Fan switches I am using. Then I will do custom runs from those fan switches to the fans themselves, so I am probably not going to use those fan extensions though I thought I would.

What will I be doing as far as PSU & Sleeving this time around?

It will all of course be Red & Black MDPC sleeving. I have a LEPA 1600W PSU and a Silverstone 850W PSU I will be using in this build. I will be building all custom cables for both PSU's. Because I do not know where everything is going and the exact lengths between, I cannot get to sleeving yet. I do however plan on doing all cables to exact lengths, including the fan cables. As you can see on top of one stack of fans, I have a roll of 100' of 18AWG red cable there to do all the custom cabling work. I have a bunch left over from the last Frank build, so I may need to buy a little more, but not much I think to do all the cables in Frank.

Sitting to the left of those cables you see is a roll thingy - those are actually the machined billet feet for the case when it shows up. They are black.

OK, as predicted, the desk & the office will be "modded" before the case. At least I will have the place ready to receive the beast when it arrives and gets assembled. I just received notice the new area rug will arrive tomorrow that I picked up for 50% off one day at Rugs.com. They sent me this wonderful “One day only sale” emails I reacted to and acted upon. I happened to find a rug <$200 w/Shipping that I think will work out nicely, though it is a neutral color being two tone grey, it should still work with the Black/Red theme. Apparently its pretty tough to find black indoor/outdoor carpet that has low pile or a tight weave at the 9x12 I am looking for and at a reasonable price. So I found a grey two tone that will solve the two main issues I have and that is the shedding of the carpet everywhere as well as loosing parts in the thick shag.

So we are going to start this effort off with pictures of before, during, and after for those who just like to picture browse, I will try to keep the images in a flow you will not have to read and still get the basic idea. I will not only be removing everything from the office, but I will also be changing the desk around, placing the carbon fiber on the desk, etc as I begin to put it all back together. I do not see getting it all 100% done this weekend, but the majority to where I can start work back up on Monday is all I care about accomplishing. That would mean the carpet will be put down, the desk modded, and basically everything brought back into the office in a way I can work Monday – Friday next week. I have another cabinet to build to put in the office as well as a steel black shelf unit that I will put between the two cabinets. Once the basic layout of the room is done, that is when I will start doing the final clean-up and organizing. Somewhere in the week I will get the three 24” monitors back up, and begin working towards the modification of the equipment rack as well.

NEW CARPET
200owdn05a.jpg

RESOLVING THE EQUIPMENT RACK ISSUE
Well in my infinite wisdom of assuming that a 19” rack is capable of holding a 18” wide case between the posts turned out to be incorrect as I only had 17.5” of clearance which clearly would not allow me to place this case in the rack shelf like I planned. That was the whole reason for the custom case was to allow it to be set inside the 19” rack as an all contained solution. Well I had to compromise on the I/O panel orientation to feed out the back, when I wanted it to feed out the side of the rack so I could use my cable management solution there. Well that wasn’t an inexpensive option to have modded. It actually caused much design issues, so I conceded there. Well now I have the issue that it is simply not going to fit anyway – so what to do?

I got to looking at the construction of the rack, and the shelf I had slated for the case and realized I can still make things work – with a little more modifications. Instead of sitting “in” the rack, it will sit on top of the rack. I need to find a bandsaw to cut the pipe holding the 3x 24” monitors up anyway, so at the same time I may as well cut the rack to accommodate the vision I have. I will have everything out of the rack and unplugged, so this is the best time to do the cut here as well. I will cut the rack so the side posts are equal height to the desk. I will take the 25” long shelf I have, flip it over and mount it upside down and flush with the side posts tops. I may go as far as wrapping a board for the case to sit on if the upside down shelf and cut posts are an eye sore. I can always cover that top part up with a carbon fiber wrapped board of some kind to providea more visually appealing base for the case to sit on. This way it is an open shelf on top of the rack. Because the bottom of the rack will house three UPS units, one that is all batteries as an extended time for one of the UPS’s, those will weigh down the bottom of the rack, allowing me to place this beast on top of the rack on the upside down shelf. This will allow the case to be at desk level so the cables simply flow from the back of the unit to the desk/monitors. The extra weight on the bottom will keep or should keep the rack stable with the heavy case on top.

This is the basic idea of what I am planning to do (not to scale).

rackw.png

So I have my work cut out for me this weekend. May not have any gaming time at all, but oh well, it will be worth it. I will be moving the desk back to where I used to have it so I can have access to both sides of the monitors and desk. This cut some room out of the room the way it was configured, but overall I liked it best. So the desk will go back by the bathroom door, facing the closet like it once was a long time ago, just with the rack in place now next to the desk as opposed to it being on the other side of the room.

Office is done – well sort of. At least the major things are done.
 • Shag rug is out – may it NOT rest in peace, hopefully it will burn in hell, but that’s just my hopes.
 • New area rug is in
 • The additional cabinet is built
 • The new shelf is built
 • Desk is carbon Fiber Wrapped
 • Office is arranged where it will be for quite a while
 • Frank is wired up and working – cables still need to be cleaned up
 • The equipment rack is cut to size and reconfigured

So here we go with the transition........

get those cables sorted man! seeing the wires hanging straight down from the side monitors instead of going to the middle and down hurts my OCD. :) but really, this looks great, im super jealous of your setup. keep the pics coming! cant wait to see the new case in here when it comes.

Is it odd that I have that same background and that same calendar? ;)

Looking good, keep going!

(hears an angelic choir)
I actually heard the sound of my back screaming and me calling my favorite masseuse to get me in NOW, too much in a short time, taking its toll on me I suppose. I started at 4PM Friday, stopped about 10-11PM that night, next day I was done, up and running by noon, at the masseuse at 2:30 - lol.

With the lights out and Black Ops II cranking, I never noticed them at all. Then the lights came on, and I started doing work and it was like - OMG look at those wires, this is killing me - this is so not "Frank". So I went to bed - but do fully intend on cleaning up the cables and getting them somewhat neat up to where Frank sits. There I know will change with the new case, so I will need to leave some room for moving them around.

I am still debating on that new case too - as always I am thinking of some changes already to it. Originally I ordered the Water Barrel 24 in brushed aluminum, intending to Carbon Fiber wrap the entire thing, however the more I think about it and after doing the desk, I realized that I would not want to do this inside and out, so I may be best to order it as a Black Mirror Coat like the top piece and carbon fiber what I want to instead of requiring me to do the whole thing inside and out. The next thing I thought of is that I ordered that Water Barrel 24 with solid sides, thinking the watercooling parts will be down there and I would want a place to "hide" things if I wanted to. Well that again didn’t set well with me and now I am thinking of either clear sides or windowed sides so you can see what’s down there - ie the MO-RA3, etc. Its going to be worth viewing, so I am thinking of changing the order while I can to incorporate those two things.

Your builds are so impressive dude! The room looks absolutely fantastic!
Thanks very much, I am really happy with this change and hope that this build does live up to and surpass the last.

It has allowed me to drop in a shelf and another cabinet, which subsequently has led to getting things a tad more organized. All those blue/clear boxes are all my SATA cables, cable sleeving, water cooling parts, and about every internal power/communication cable, extender, and misc parts I have had for the last 10+ years. It’s nice to have them on a shelf I can easily access. Before they were all stacked in a single stack in the closet - every time I needed something it was always in the bottom one, which meant I had to tear them all out of the closet just to get them. So the additional storage is going to be very nice.

The rug - well yeah, if you read close to the start of this thread, there is much celebration to see that shag go away and this tight weave no shedding one arrive.

The desk needed the boost to keep its use alive. I did not do as well as I hoped to with the carbon fiber vinyl application, but in the end it works. My wife helped me as it was quite the project to hold the roll with minimal slack while the other smoothed it out inch by inch as we laid it down. Many mistakes, pulling it up ended up stretching some, which ended up being creases, etc. So we learned as we went along - then I found the beauty of the heat gun and what it can do with this stuff, I will certainly be using it when I do the smaller parts. I carbon fibered one of my photo frames that was once copper colored in the red Di-Noc, what an awesome thing that was. I like that Di-Noc and the way it works when you soften it via heat gun.

Is it odd that I have that same background and that same calendar? ;)

Looking good, keep going!
Odd you have the same background? Not at all, anyone that likes the Audi R8 would have seen or had as their desktop background. I am sure it’s quite commonly used as a background image. The calendar though is a collector’s edition - lol and you and I are the only collectors, with the exception of the others I gave a copy to aside from you. So no, not odd at all. Thanks for being a "Frank" fan

Notice I never changed that calendar from November? I just did - (facepalm) - oh well, it’s a good shot of what Frank was when he hit CPU mag in Jan of 2012.

Now on to something completely different................

Talked to the guy at Watercool this morning via email and they do not have the Ni-Bl blocks in stock yet, so we are waiting. Not that there is a rush, still need to get the case too, so no worries there yet. They did though send a template of what they are going to do with the back plate etching. Granted, my design did not use their "Heatkiller" logo, so they needed to modify the design a tad to ensure they used their logo - rightfully so. Here is the stencil they sent for my approval - which of course they got. I cannot wait to get these babies in hand and in Frank. For those who do not know what I am referring to, these are the custom etched back plates for the GTX 680's when I put the Heatkiller water blocks on them. These will be "Frank's" custom etched PCB covers.

Looking fantastic and detailed as always. I'll be doing an office tear down and re-do myself, once I scan in everything from my filing cabinet...

Gracias Amigo

Scan everything from your filing cabinet b4 re-doing office? Just box it up, throw it in the attic, only time you really need that stuff is if the IRS comes by to visit. (sorry for the disturbing content and foul language used in the previous sentence). Burn barrel outside works too, or ask any "Enron" style company if they can lend you a shredder....... ;) then get the re-do on! hehe Personally I try to do it all electronic to start with, that way I can always hit delete - much easier to clean up files when you can shred them electronically and the hard copy seems to have found its own way in life......

That rack turned out really well cut down like that. Usually I am in favor of bigger racks ( - )( - ) but the smaller ones have their place too :D

Get the clear sides on the water barrel. What good are all those rads and pumps if we can't see them??

Well, the advantage to saying that I will scan everything is that I am now really motivated to get rid of a lot of stuff first, because I don't want to actually do any of that. Most important stuff is either digital or in the fire proof box, most other stuff is just teaching materials. I've already generated one decent box to go to recycling, and am hoping for one more, and then everything after becomes digital (since redoing the office will create space for the doc scanner to live somewhere permanent). I scanned in everything for my course reader this quarter and it has been awesome to have everything in .pdf (I wind up doing a lot of copying/scanning from books usually) and available for my students. Once I've pared everything down, it should just take one intoxicated afternoon with the sheet-feed to get everything in.
I also need to actually sand/stain/seal the shelves that are going in place of the cabinet, and it's damp around here right now. For some reason my gf doesn't want big chunks of dripping wood around the apartment...so those will take some time anyway.
I'm still in apartment living mode, so I'd like to get rid of everything that I don't want to move anymore anyway, so this seems like a good excuse all around, and I'm all about tricking myself into usefulness.

Seeing your carbon wrap makes me think about resurfacing my desk--I have been wearing down the finish in some spots...

I have only read the first three pages of this thread so far, so I don't know if it's already been stated. The Alphacool Dual D5 reservoir (the Repack) in this thread cannot be used in a "Serial" configuration. There's no way to connect the "Out" of the PUMP to the "In" of the second pump. The "IN" on the back of the unit goes straight to the reservoir, not to an actual pump.

You could try a "Y-Fitting" but I ran into pressure/RPM issues when trying a "Y-Fitting". One pump would not spin up to full RPMs. I would recommend a different reservoir. Good luck, and nice build

I'm excited. Are you using flashes or strobes behind those umbrellas? Also, what camera are you using? Photography nerd here as well.

Can't wait to see Frank up and running!

It says it can be, but you are correct, they pull from the same reservoir so they really cannot be. With that understood, my ultimate plan is to run one pump through the motherboard blocks, one pump through the CPU blocks. I also have two more MCP 655/D5 pumps I will be using a dual mod top with that will also pull from the MO-RA3 as both reservoir and radiator to feed the GTX 680's. Basically 1-2 pumps per loop is what is being devised in my head at the moment, so we are good to go, but thank you for pointing that out.

That rack turned out really well cut down like that. Usually I am in favor of bigger racks ( - )( - ) but the smaller ones have their place too :D

Yeah I always like "big racks", much more entertaining to watch go by - err I mean, uhh, well anyway, yeah, nothing beats a well rounded loaded rack. For what I did though with my equipment rack I think it will work out fine. I will be dropping a support board on top for my peace of mind. However I do feel that rack fits better now and will hold the new case much nicer this way. Also where it is positioned, the current 800D blocks my view of the office door, so anyone could come in without me knowing, not something I like. So yes, I went with a BIG WINDOW option on the bottom Water Barrel 24. This way you can still see in there well, but does hide some edges. Putting that on both sides allows me to see through it, so with that option and the top units full acrylic sides, I should be able to see through the case to the door as well as inside the case to all the goodies.

I'm excited. Are you using flashes or strobes behind those umbrellas? Also, what camera are you using? Photography nerd here as well.

Can't wait to see Frank up and running!

lol, caught my lights did ya? ;) Those are just 5200K halogens. Seemed all the "white" lights I would buy seemed yellow. I bought a light kit off eBay to do photography and found I really liked these lights, so I use them daily as lights in the room. The only other source is the cieling fan and the three lights in it can only be like 25w each or some stupid thing because of the new safety standards they set in the ceiling fans. So I needed good lighting in here - those umbrellas worked and I thought looked good too. Plus they help when taking pictures as well because I always have good lighting in here.

I do plan on getting some flashes to go in there though.

Using a Canon T2i Rebel 18MP DSLR with an assortment of lenses and lens filters. I am a semi-photography nut as well. One thing leads to another and as I wanted to take better pictures of Frank, the gear started being accumulated then I started liking the more I learned about photography. So I started doing landscapes and Frank pics. I have played with some really close up lenses I have that magnify things like CPU's so I can get really sharp close, crazy images all the way to a 10-20mm 1:4-5:6 Sigma EX wide angle and even my precious 200-350mm zoom. I have a few other lenses and flash kits, soft boxes, and things. I have reflector panels with gold, silver, white sides, etc and even a white/greenscreen/and black (OMG my mind went blank to the real name of these) backdrops. All to take pictures of Frank - lol, then I started getting into it as I travelled and now I go nowhere without my Canon.

A few shots I took in Barcelona

Remember the Arizona fires that the smoke was all the way in New Mexico and beyond a year or so ago? This was the smoke on the highway heading north to Albuquerque, NM

La Joa California

Just a few shots to keep the picture browsers happy - lol.

I'm picturing a pistol grip shotgun mounted on a swivel in the rack somewhere under the case. Just a little something to keep everybody honest.

Ahh yes, it would be nice, but better to lean it up against the wall so there is no suprises - lol

NOTE: Image was borrowed - no black fuzz on carpet, no red stains on carpet, wrong base board, not my house - lol, but felt the image was fitting to the conversation.
