Didn't want to start a new thread but hope I don't hijack. Just started. Wanted to share I added another machine. I currently run my sig rig now all the time except when gaming (it's running now while watching a movie and typing this)

Just need to wait for update.. Not sure if the slow clock speed will hurt the points. Either way the host wasn't doing much in my little lab.

Thanks. I don't feel any pressure to up your ante, I don't have the funds for that so it's an easy decision lol. I'd be a more efficient contributor with a newer spec though. But that is just fact.
I have no issues letting my always on PC crunch some data, although, it may push me to purchase a new PSU sooner. lol That little CX430 is a champ! (see sig rig)

Nothing wrong with a shapless mass of crunching madness. At least at the surface [H] is using its powers for good :)


I'm not sure it will be worth me running the 12core. Looks like the speed makes a huge difference. I'd have to check its power pull at the outlet but isn't making many credits. :(

I'll switch to whatever challenge is needed. Just seemed my 2Ghz cpu's are slacking.. Which I can understand compared to a 4.2Ghz.. just sucks lol

Outlaw85 I have a strong suspicion that the difference you are seeing between the points is because Milkyway is using your Nvidia 980 GTX gpu. My recommendation is to embrace that and use your PCs to their strengths by doing a few things. One suggestion would be to change Milkway to use just the GPU, and run a different CPU only project at the same time on that PC. Screenshot below of the Milkway project preference screen. Second suggestion is to pick a 2 or even 3rd project that runs on CPUs only. We as a team participate in a handful of different projects and we try and make this fun by racing other teams in year long marathons and all this is encapsulated in a nice webpage here (click on the tab for 1 or 3 day averages). Right now the team XtremeSystems is giving us a good strong fight.

Rosetta@Home is a project that simulates protein folding for the advancement of medicines, clean energy and materials sciences. We are in 3rd place right now, and it doesn't have many of our team members crunching on it, and we area few million points away from the next team. It is CPU only. Maybe you'd find that project interesting and worthy of your support. The team to join after creating your new users is [H]ard|OCP. If I remember right, this project doesn't award huge daily points (points aren't even between the projects, just due to the types of calculations, cpu instruction support, gpus etc).

WCG is also a favorite that is CPU only right now. The project has a bunch of interesting internal subprojects that you can select from. The team name there is HardOCP

You could add Rosetta to your 12 core, and WCG to your 4770k. Or opposite, or pick something else, or keep going with Milkway. :) Maybe the other members have suggestions.

My Milkway prefference page, to use just the Nvidia GPU. The Resource share at the top is a number that you decide based on the proportion of time you want it to run compared to all the other BOINC projects you might have enabled on your PC.

Rosetta will want more RAM than WCG will. So, factor that into your DC "budget". Both projects are extremely popular in the DC world but also tend to both be low scoring projects.
 

Thanks, I, for some reason, couldn't figure out the "mention" feature so I quoted. I will try to change the 12core tonight to WCG. If it will help more over there, just makes sense. And I must have been in the wrong menu because I don't remember seeing those options at all. I'll poke around the menu's to see where I missed them.

You can change the MW preferences in the picture at the end of this post.

MW runs slow on CPU's and the points it produces are blah. So you're better off running a cpu only project with the cores and the 980 on a GPU project you feel happy to contribute to.

Each project website has preferences that can be tweaked at the project level. Then there are preferences within the BOINC client as well. If you use an account manager like BOINCStats BAM!, you can configure some settings there but I personally find individual PC settings best tailored locally.

72GB would be waaaay more ram for either of the boxes listed above to need at most projects. The only one right now I would be concerned with would be if you were running YoYo@home and had ECM sub project selected as some of those work units can have monster RAM requirements that aren't always obvious. For Rosetta and/or WCG it would be overkill. Most projects are fine with 1GB per thread. That is typically my recommendation for when planning RAM in DC boxes. However, the more the merrier and even the faster the better at some of the math projects. When the next sprint is announced, we can address your in

Set the GPU to 50% because it's still a daily user but should net a few more points to MW.
VM is now working on WCG. I think it's doing it's thing.. Just waiting to get some time on it to see the points.

Which WCG tasks are you running? I find Ebola gave me the best PPD, but I liked running Mapping Cancer Markers.

If i'm going to waste compute cycles, I might as well put them to work. But I don't have a problem putting to compete either. That's just a win win. I'm for changing it to whatever the team needs.
 
Go to the Formula-BOINC site and take a look at all the projects. Not all at once, but every few days sign up to one of those projects and see how she runs for a couple days.

Best way is with both feet. Just jump on in.

Hey, as long as you are crunching something, you are doing good work for science. If you are doing that crunching on one of the projects in the Formula BOINC list, you are helping the [H]orde. If you also participate in the Sprints and various Challenges, we would appreciate that very much. However, whether you participate in those things is totally up to you. If you want to just crunch one project all the time, that is fine, too. Whatever you want to do is totally cool. No pressure here at all. You could have chosen any team, but you chose us. We thank you for any and all contributions!

WCG is a great project if you want to contribute to important medical research. Same with Rosetta. TN-Grid, too, as well as GPU Grid (if you want to crunch on a GPU). There are others, as well. Take a look at the Formula BOINC (FB) project list and then visit the sites of those projects and crunch on those you deem worthy of your electricity budget. Personally, I crunch on everything because I chase project badges, Free DC Mega Milestones, and WU Prop project hours (you'll learn what stuff all of that means soon enough).

You are doing great so far. There is one other selection I would recommend because later you may want to chase badges and it is one of the hardest to achieve at WCG. That is to go into your settings and accept BETA work as well. At WCG you go to: My contributions > Beta Testing (tab on the left) > Check the boxes for each profile you have listed. > click save.

Then I would recommend you add two other non-WCG projects to your BOINC client as they are non-cpu intensive and will run alongside your other work without taking away from them. Add WUProp and Goofyxgrid NCI.

For TN-Grid, my Threadripper 1950X tasks are taking 2 hours 40 minutes each. My RAM is 3200mhz cas 14. Running quad channel with default CPU clocks.

16 tasks running at once. Plus a few Milkyway GPU tasks.

We are hot in a Sprint right now on TN-Grid. We are doing OK but solidly in 2nd place. Please join in and help out. The secret invite code the project asks for is science@tn

The project is slow on creating work units, so once you add the project you'll want to run this Windows batch script file to ensure you get units to crunch through. Save it in a file name something like TNGridPolling.bat Then, right click the file and choose run.

Friday is wrapping up and we are in 1st. Our competition isn't putting forth many points, and my assumption is that they are "bunkering" their results and are going to release them on the last day. We need to stay strong, since they could drop those points on themselves and EVGA; dropping us all the way to 3rd. Their heaviest hitters, hardest crunchers, toughest players, are completely absent from this race so far and haven't contributed any points, so their is the real possibility they could pull off a huge upset and go home with the gold and put us in our place at 3rd.

Keep your rigs crunching and true on the mark of [H].
