Folding on a lappy

I inherited a lappy to play with, and its still up to snuff for some decent folding (XPM 2500+, 512mb ram). I am curios though, will F@H still run if the system is in standby/hibernate (aka shut)?

not sure about stanby but i am pretty sure it wouldn't

I would also make sure that you don't run folding while on batts

i just have hibernation/standby turned off...and also i have it set to not do anything when i shut the lid so i can close it with it still folding.

I set mine to always on. but turn off the screen after 5 minutes. I leave it open all the time for message retrival and ease of use.

One word of warning--don't run folding AND use standby/hibernate. If it's in hibernate/standby for more than 3 hours, the folding client gets the mistaken impression that it's locked up and not making any progress, and aborts the current WU. Better to shut down completely, or at least stop folding before you go into standby.

Just make sure you change the power settings for the HDD's and System to Always on...Closing the lid should do nothing at that point.

Spent a few years folding my laptop and I would strongly suggest leaving the screen in the up position. I think you will find it will run much cooler that way.

You also might want to add a few water bottle caps as feet to raise the unit a bit for more air flow.

Speed Fan (small res mem program you can download) will usually allow you to set the fan to full speed.

Just some thoughts.

I don't think I'd close the lid on my notebook whiel folding either. I've scaled back the CPU % usage a touch also.

The standby/3 hours deal killing WU's-- that's only on QMD's and/or some gromacs I think.

I shut this lappy lid when not in use. I run the proggie at 75% to help with the heat and I dont have a single problem. My living room right now is still 70ish degrees yet from the day's sun on the house. Even the palm rests are only warm... I should turn it up alittle now that I just realized that.

It all depends on who paid for the lappy. I run my work laptop full bore. (If it breaks I get an upgrade much sooner than the normal 4 year wait)

hibernate and standby dont let me fold on my lappy. Just turn the screen off and BAM, the answer to why proteins fold gets that much closer (hopefully)

I use shotgalsses. It jacks it up higher and the glass acts as a heatsink. Thats what I jack my router up on. Keeps it much cooler.

QFT, use speedfan. Even if you don't use it to change fan speed, its great for temps.

I buy shot glasses everywhere I go. Cheapest thing to collect. So I have like 4 at my desk and 12 in the liquor cabinet. Besides, I'm only 16. =D

I run 100% on my Dell i6000 all the time, and shut the lid when I'm not around. Of course, it has a 1.86 P-m that stays nice and cool, even while folding. I do run Centrino hardware control and undervolt it to 1.13v, which is good for 30 watts while folding with the lid down, and 40 watts with the screen on(I have a kill-a-watt). Temps are around 40-50C depending on ambient temps.

I just lean the laptop against my couch on the floor with the ventholes around the fan pointing out, and I never have heat issues.

Nope, it's for everything. The client has a sort of watchdog timer on the core, and when nothing happens for 3 hours while the laptop is on, it panics. It classifies "hibernate" and "standby" as "on and running".

that is the same lappy i have and yea...mine is setup and runs just like yours

Well, heat shouldn't be to bad of an issue. I have one of those fan pads which seems to do its job decently. It's a loud motherfucker, but this lappy has wireless-b so it can go into hiding.

I suppose I could leave it open... it probably won't be moving much. I am sure it will go on my workbench in the basement. Would come in handy to be able to refer to the internet whilst working on puters down there.

Why put it in a shotglass? It's best to drink it straight out of the bottle anyway.

Trust me, I do nothing like I did in my younger days. I still think liquor is best out of the bottle, though.

Back to topic;

If you want to close the lid, you can also run her upside down on a soft surface to avoid scratching the cover. This is how I ran my lappy for 4 months before i moved.

It also helps that i have my intake vents on the bottom, and i always have a big fan running in my room.
