i've installed the client and joined team 33. :)

my only question (a few of the links are broken) is this... i installed the "regular" client from the f@h website (systray). for the GPU client, is that something completely different? do i install that alongside? i would think i only want one running but couldn't find the answers after searching. i have an nvidia geforce 8800 GT.

thx :)

It's a different client listed under the "High Performance Clients" section of Stanford's download page. Welcome to the team! :D

As others have mentioned, welcome to the addiction. Welcome to the best folding addiction support group, team 33!

... can't say that we'll always support your wallet though :D

MAY THE [H]ORDE BE WITH YOU
FOLD ON!

Welcome! If you told us your setup what processor do you have and what you use your computer for we could help maximize your output.

Velkommen!

The systray client will work just dandy for the 8800 GT.

CPU wise (unless that's a dual but I don't think so) your good with the standard client, as for the GPU, the standard systry client will do good, you'll get like 4k from the 88, 250-750 from the CPU

anyways, welcome aboard! Although I wouldn't say were an addiction support group, all we seem to do is get worse lol

I try to support my own and other's addictions as much as possible thank you very much. BTW Vaulter if you keep having low days I'm gonna beat you to rank 100 here in about 7 days.

Good to have you aboard, Ciggwin. That will be a nice chunk of production.

I know, my bad, I havnt gamed in so long lol
I put the PS3 back in my name to help compensate tho, maybe I'll set up SMP a well

Still going strong on the home machine... want to set up another machine that is Windows 7 x64. I downloaded the client but I see it is labeled x86... does this matter or should it still work fine?

Regular systray client not the GPU client (this is a quad core machine with onboard GPU so I think CPU will produce much better results than GPU).

System specs please.....

What you want to download is the windows SMP client that is on the "high preformance" beta page at stanford.

I'm on my phone or I would link it but hit the guide section for windows SMP.

Quad core, don't run the uni client, run the windows smp, it's much better than it used to be

That would be the "Windows XP/2003/Vista/2008/7 SMP2 client console version" yes?

Ok, I have gone through the setup successfully but it doesn't run unless I keep the CMD window open.

In the initial setup I did not configure the advanced options so I tried to re-do that part and it kept crashing the .exe

I will reboot and try it again with going through the advanced options. Should it run in the system tray like I am used to with the older clients?

I do see the 4 instances of the .exe in the task manager, but obviously once I close the CMD window they go away.

Dude! Nice to have you here folding with us!

The CMD window needs to stay open. I think you can use something like TrayIt to minimize it to your tray (has been years since I tried to do this.) Others probably have better ideas for this. You theoretically could run it as a service, but I seem to recall problems with doing this.

Ah OK then i'll just have to dock CMD on the far left of my Win7 task bar so I don't really have to worry about it being in the middle of my work.

Alright it's been going overnight and just sent in my first work unit and got another one.

One more question: I have the GPU client installed at home (first 1/2 of this thread) and the SMP client installed here at work (second 1/2 of this thread). On my user stats page it says 1 client active within 7 days and 3 within 50. Is there a way to tell which client is the one active within 7 days? I just want to make sure everything is being sent to the right spot. Is there a way to cross-check from client to points or something?

UPDATE!

I just reached #997 on the top 1000 for Team 33! :D  :D

997 ciggwin 427844 1269

Now another question :)

Based on the system specs for a machine, is one client (CPU vs. GPU) better than another? I just ordered a huge upgrade to my home box and I would like to put the quad core to good use... with winter coming, I could use the extra heat :) The machine will also have a GeForce 8800GT in it for a while (same video card as above in the thread, I'm putting it in the 'new' box) so should I run both clients? Just one?

welcome to the top 1k :D

IF you are doing the Core 2 Quad, you will be best off running both clients

yep, run the SMP on the quad core box and run the GPU client on the 8800GT

One thing to double check: make sure 100% of your CPU is being used in task manager.

again, welcome!

I have the task manager client on my work box (Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9400) and I am averaging 30%-40% CPU... do I need to tweak somehow?

yep.

you'll need to make a shortcut to folding@home-win32.exe

add "-smp" to the end of the "target" box. So it will look something like:

C:\SMP\Folding@home-Win32-x86.exe -smp

yep.

I modified it to this:

C:\FAH\FAH6.exe -smp

Doesn't seem to have worked. I do see the -smp argument in the FAH6 window when I open it, but the CPU usage has not increased. Maybe I need to wait for the next work unit? I am using the Windows SMP client installation (MPICH version).

Also, should I see 4 instances of this in Task Manager processes? I am only seeing one.

right. it might need to finish a work unit or three before it will download a SMP WU. give it a bit of time

There is a way to make it finish the current unit and return the others. I think the "-oneunit" flag will make it do this. So you could make a oneunit shortcut as well, then start up the SMP shortcut.

Or you could just let it run its course :)
