I am doing research for my first PC build, and I was wondering about the difference that an seperate sound card makes over the built-in mobo equipment. I like to listen to MP3's and CD's while I'm working at my PC, and I do play a few games from time to time. Would my needs really justify buying a seperate sound card?

YES!

Any suggestions as to what sound card would be best for someone with basic needs?

Nice price on the Altec Lansings.....

What's the budget for the sound setup?

I saw these in the new Maximum PC.. they got a 9 rating.. plus they are only $99. They look very attractive if you are looking for decent accurate speakers for your pc at a cheap price.

Truth be told I'd really like to come in under $100 for the sound. At least at this point. I'm trying to keep the system under $1000 because college has made money a little tight for me and this is going to stretch me out for months as it is. I want quality, but it doesn't have to be perfect. I just want clarity.

Get a Chaintech AV710 and then a nice little pair of headphones like some Grado SR60s.

I think that the Chaintech is what I'll go with. I see a lot of good reviews for it, and it is reasonably priced.
