I am doing research for my first PC build, and I was wondering about the difference that an seperate sound card makes over the built-in mobo equipment. I like to listen to MP3's and CD's while I'm working at my PC, and I do play a few games from time to time. Would my needs really justify buying a seperate sound card?

What're your speakers/headphones?
I haven't really decided on those yet, but I've heard some good things about some Logitech sets. One is the 5.1 and the other is the 2.1

The Chaintech AV-710 with the Z-3 speakers would be a very decent choice.
Use the high-sample option.
Can you spare the money for the Altec MX5021? $115 shipped. They are really decent speakers.

I saw these in the new Maximum PC.. they got a 9 rating.. plus they are only $99. They look very attractive if you are looking for decent accurate speakers for your pc at a cheap price.

Truth be told I'd really like to come in under $100 for the sound. At least at this point. I'm trying to keep the system under $1000 because college has made money a little tight for me and this is going to stretch me out for months as it is. I want quality, but it doesn't have to be perfect. I just want clarity.

Get a Chaintech AV710 and then a nice little pair of headphones like some Grado SR60s.
