Final Fantasy XVI

Still running Sandy Bridge? Damn. That would be like trying to run Half-Life 2 on a 486 DX2 when it came out.

Sandy Bridge is around 13 years old...before my current 5800X CPU I was running the i7 980X for almost 10 years...now after 3.5 years I'm upgrading again to the 7800X3D

It has served me well for the past 12 years, especially paired with a 1080 Ti. Insane that I managed to squeeze that much usage out of it, but even to this day it can still adequately run most games in my backlog at 3440x1440.

I already have a new 7800X3D build ready to go, but I haven't had the time to swap the 1080 Ti into it yet. Am hoping that the new nvidia GPUs drop in the next few months so I don't have to deal with the hassle of swapping parts around.

An update was released for the demo.

https://steamcommunity.com/games/2515020/announcements/detail/4274565771147586593

Improvements have been made to DLSS, FSR, and XeSS quality.
This should help to alleviate various graphcial issues such as blurring (DLSS/XeSS) and pixelation (FSR).

The following issues have also been addressed:

Dynamic Resolution being locked on the lowest setting.
Enemies not appearing properly in certain battle content.
Graphics not displaying properly on certain stages.
Graphical tearing in certain instances when using borderless screen mode.
SFX not playing properly under certain conditions.
UI not displaying properly under certain conditions.
Screen resolution changing under certain conditions.
Rare instances of GPU crashes.
Other minor issues.

We are currently aware of instances of stuttering on certain PC environments, and are investigating the issue.

Got around to trying it out on my 5900x/RTX 3080 @ 4k (FSR3 + frame gen). Performs pretty good - had some stutters here and there, but it definitely felt better running at a higher frame rate compared to the PS5. Only at the beginning of the demo where it's pretty bland looking, so we'll see how it holds up as it gets into the heavier parts of the demo (I'm assuming this will include the same content as the PS5 demo).

Also nice to see this demo allows user defined button keybinds, I remember being annoying that the PS5 demo only had select gamepad control schemes to choose from (no idea if that's still the case, mind you).

Is there a need for frame gen with a 3080?

Is there a need for frame gen with a 3080?

Not sure, tbh; I just assumed since I was going to go 4k, but never actually tried w/o it. Starting tonight I'm on a few days of rest from work, so I'll be able to experiment a bit more with the demo.

Releases globally at 14:00 UTC on the 17th.

So will 30 frame rate cut scenes be in the release version as well? I could understand 60 which would still look lame but 30 looks like crap.

I've been replaying the demo with the new update - feels a lot smoother. I'm trying to think if I saw any stutters since the update, and can't think of anything.

During the 'Stillwind' section (or whatever that town is called), FSR3 creates a 'shimmer' on the muddy ground - which actually kinda worked for me. Made it look more 'wet' (which I doubt was the intention.)

I like how it's launching $20 cheaper than Rebirth

You mean Remake? That included the DLC. If you want the DLC for this, it is $70 to. They just give you the option to only get the main game for $50.

Reviews seem to indicate more of the same. 30 frame rate cut scenes, no ultra wide support, and the performance is still seemingly low for the graphical quality. Another lame port. Disappointing, but seems like there is a mod for the demo for the 30 frame rate cut scenes and I assume they will make one for this.

doesn't turn Torgal into Thomas the Tank Engine but it's a start, I guess

Any issues with using this mod? If not, it is absolutely crazy they didn't add these things in by default. Capped 30 frame rates and no ultra wide will get complaints and can affect sales. With low sales on PS5 you'd think they would have done a good job porting this one. They put Denuvo on it as well, but I have to think 30 frame rate cut scenes and no ultra wide would loose more sales than Denuvo would gain. And from the sound of things, these fixes could've cost them a whole lot less money than Denuvo fees.

The side quests in this game are as lazy as they get and Square really needs to fuck off with how they handle side content in general, it's awful here, in Remake, and every game they touch

Gigantic epic set piece
15 minutes later you're dealing with NPCs who want you to walk quite literally 50 feet to talk to another NPC

Like come on, you want me to believe someone's basically dying on the ground in our secret hideout and the doctor lady is completely and utterly oblivious to this despite being within yelling distance

Then some dipshit carpenter needs more wood, good thing there's already boards cut but nobody can be assed to walk them over in a straight fucking line until I show up

Major piece of advice for everyone playing 16 for the first time: Do not sell your weapons. If you ever do a new game+ you will need them.

Yep. The side quests are probably 16’s biggest problem. There are a few here and there that are at least well written enough to pay attention to, but most of them are generic MMO starting zone style quests.

There are some guides that show which ones are worth playing. Annoying to have to keep note of which stuff is crap and which stuff is fun though.

The side quests were mostly garbage MMO like filler. I did them all but I skipped all the CS and dialog.

Played for 3 hours last night, zero issues. Going from 140fps to 30 was insane and the frame time wasn’t good at 30fps too causing it to stutter. Now cutscenes hover around 100-120

The FPS cap is insane to me. There are a lot of cutscenes woven into this game that are supposed to transition seamlessly. It boggles my mind that the developers didn't think this was going to be an issue. It may have just been an oversight.

happens a lot in rpgs, the new mana game is like that too.

Seems like a Japanese developer thing, though most are realizing how dumb it is and recent ports have been better. Seems like some of them either want parity with consoles (why?) or think ultra wide aspect ratios change the look too much and 30 frame rates is more "cinematic". I guess this studio follows that older line of thinking.

Techpowerup benchmark here.

Wondering how God of War Ragnarok is. So far not reading of horrible bugs but it just came out today.

https://www.reddit.com/r/FFXVI/comments/1fkimer/bug_are_you_noticing_your_fps_suddenly_tank_out/

I have personally seen this happen as well

Suddenly noticed fight felt like shit

Realized I was at like 25-30 fps at points

...so any mod fix for this? Other things are an easy fix (frame rate cap & wide screen) but that seems to require a restart every time you swap Eikons. Which is annoying. I assume this will get patched but with this being Square I wonder how long it will take. I assume only the most common crashes and large bugs will get fixed, and the smaller ones just left as is. Seems to be how Square handles PC patches.

Apologies for the thread necro.

I just tried out the demo yesterday & loved it so much that I wound up buying the complete edition through Steam for the Golden Week sales.

Really looking forward to experiencing it fully.
