I just picked up a copy of Final Fantasy 14 to play as the price had dropped to $30 and it's free to play for a while...and the girl started playing and asked me to start up, so you know how it goes.

Anyone else on here still playing?

I beta tested it in open beta for 2 hours. The game was beyond terrible. I could not bring myself to pick it up again. It was poorly configured, poorly designed, poorly everything.

I played FFXII for a few months and thought it pretty decent. Seems like this version isn't even close to being up to par with its predecessor?

I want to play it, I have a friend that's into it and my brother still plays XI

yet, I cant get past the fact I'd be stabbing myself in the eyes with my monitor and slitting my wrists with my keyboard after awhile.

I'm still on it. My faith is strong.

I found a more productive way to spend time grinding crafts... by catching up on all the DVDs I bought while randomly stabbing the button on the gamepad.

I played XI for 6 years, I pre-ordered the XIV collector's edition and I haven't logged in to the game since around Christmas. Getting skill points after rank 20 or so is way to slow and grindy for me. major changes are supposedly in the works so I'm not playing right now and I'm waiting to see what direction they take things.

I'm still playing and enjoying the game. I have a great linkshell and we always do stuff together so that keeps it interesting. My archer is rank 43 and my cooking is rank 40 and my fishing is rank 30. The game has improved since its release, with some changes made to the UI, reduction of UI lag, etc. There has been some NM content put in for the high rank players too.

However, this game is still in need of a lot of work, and by no means should someone go into this game expecting to enjoy it without becoming part of an active, social linkshell. If you fail to do this, you will feel secluded and get bored very quickly.

There was a big letter from the producer released today announcing the results of the player's poll, and giving players some feedback on what the new development team plans to add to/change the game.

I can admit this game is not for everyone. Don't play it if you don't enjoy crafting. Don't play it if you like to solo. Don't play it if you are of the mentality that an MMO isn't worth playing unless you are maximum level/rank (like WoW). Don't play it if you expect to be level capped in 2 months and feasting on end-game content. Don't play it if you don't like grinding. Don't play it if you only like to play one class in an MMO, this game requires you to put effort into multiple classes to build a strong character. And definitely don't play it if you are impatient. :)

Edit: If you do decide to play, come on over to Lindblum and send me a /tell. I will be more than willing to help new players get their feet under them. My name is Cannon Adon. Here is my profile: http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/rc/character/status?cicuid=1563922

steaming pile of crap still. I honestly am baffled how they could destroy that franchise so badly with their MMO's.

Specific snippet from the interview with Yoshida:
--
Q: In the survey, you ask what content players would like to see added. One of the options is an auction house, which seems quite specific. What was your aim with this question?

A: Yoshida: The auction house is a system that was implemented in Final Fantasy XI. This is something I haven't revealed before, but I believe we focused too much on FFXIV being different from FFXI. As a key to having a vibrant economy, there should exist a system for players that is easy to use. If that means an auction house, then shouldn't we work aggressively to implement it? Making everything original isn't necessarily correct, I think.

Main problem with FFXIV, right there IMO.

one of the biggest problem of FFXIV. It worked well on XI and they took it down on XIV. stupid move.

i dont know about ff14, BUT, if they remade ff7 with proper graphics and left the story and characters intact, it would sell like hotcakes!

Im sure it would, except that's not really innovation :( They took two steps back from 11 to 14, where if they had just made progress off of 11, 14 wouldve been just fine.

What do you think caused the massive problems with XIV ?

The attempt to include the PS3 as a system along with the PC? Was XI's ui as satanic as XIV's?

Do the designers play games in a bubble? Did they learn and take anything good from other games? It's ok to steal good ideas... I... I am at a loss, for both words, and the 80 bucks I paid for the collectors edition. But this game had one redeeming value. NEVER PUT FAITH IN ANYTHING.

This game has destroyed almost every scrap of good will and expectations. I am now a hollow husk of a human being, expect the absolute worst so as to shield myself from the horror I experienced playing that game.

The only company inoculated so far is bioware. But I am so damaged now, before ffXIV I might have bought rift for the hell of it, now I am trying the beta first.

Funny how getting burned (or incinerated) makes one more careful and paranoid.

The UI currently is significantly different than when it launched.

nope and i doubt theyll recover from this. I dont understand as history shows us with MMO you need to nail the launch. I still dont see why they feel they have to rush. When they know if they rush it will be a disaster.

I dont think they'll ever recover... They might as well start a new MMO and learn from their mistakes...

Bad design killed the launch more than rushing to market. Many of the problems with FFXIV are simply the result of stupid decisions to do things in a way that almost no one enjoyed. The whole thing feels like the development team had never played a modern MMO and were locked away from the rest of the world for 4 years while they worked on the game. More time would have resulted in those terrible decisions just being more polished, since apparently no one with common sense made any decisions. The people in charge were so far out of touch with reality that they actually thought they were releasing a good game.

I continue to hope XIV gets completely overhauled and manages to succeed. With FFXI Square has shown that they can make an enjoyable MMO (and support the game for a decade), its too bad XIV turned out so bad. Square is on a definite downward trend with XIII and XIV both being rather large disappointments. Plus The Last Remnant was an embarrassing shit fest. Without a quick turnaround people will stop giving Square Enix the benefit of the doubt and just stop buying the games.

I actually liked the Last Remntant, I think I put in over a hundred hours into it. I think it would have been better if you couldnt gimp your characters by killing a lot of mobs at a low lvl.

While I agree that MOST MMO's fail if the launch fails, there are some exceptions. EVE was terrible at launch and most people hated it. While its not as popular as WOW today, its definitely doing well for itself and has a pretty good niche market.

I still hold out hope for this, because I WANT a good FF MMO, I just don't have one :(.

Many would argue that the ONLY reason EVE has its niche popularity is that it has no real competition whatsoever.

I also stopped playing right around Christmas. While I was very much pleased with the improvements they made to the UI and associated response times, it just wasn't enough to keep me hooked. There's still way too many gaping deisgn flaws everywhere, and honestly, I just wasn't enjoying the game anymore.

Though I do hope that they can right this sinking ship and eventually deliver a quality game. It's just going to be quite awhile before that actually happens. At least it gives me a chance to work through my backlog.

Still playing. (Rabanastre server, reprezent)
Nearly all my English-speaking friends have gone or are on hiatus until the Yoshi-P agenda starts getting implemented.
It feels like I've gone back in time to FFXI Q4 2002/Q1 2003. It's almost all JP now, and its still busy 'round the aetherytes.

My playtime will definitely be curtailed due to all the releases coming out in Feb (especially MvC3), but I've yet to grow tired of the game.

The game has SO much potential, but it got old VERY fast. I think the crafting/repairing issues is what killed it for me. I may reinstall and see if I have any free time left to check out any changes they have made.

I still play. My GF hung it up, however.

I got a buddy who's plays and is waiting for a few parts to get his GF in. (We all played FFXI together).

I got a new buddy and his wife in and playing - but they're running into UI and function challenges which those of us who've played since day one have slowly either tolerated or circumvented. So, convincing them that "You'll get used to it" probably gets old to hear after a while...

The status of the game has pretty much been said in this thread already. The frustrations exist for sure. While I'm glad my friends have joined, its hard to not just sit there and just take punch after punch about how difficult the game is for new players. I've sold them all on the idea that the game plays better with a controller, but they've been groomed to game on KB/Mouse, so its a new learning curve that's proving difficult to overcome without frustration winning out. I spend a lot of time escorting them on Leve's and Behests to show them how combat and targetting works. (or doesnt work, depending on your perspective). But its the same complaints over and over. "Why can't I jump?", "Why can't I step over this 2 inch incline?", "Why can't I change my clothes colors?", "Where is the Auction House?", "When do I get a mount?"...on and on.

While it may be called blind faith, in my want to believe that this will get better, I can't recommend the game to anyone in its current state. All I can do is continue to get the levels, get the gear, and hope that I can launch into the new content/features/zones as soon as they come out. Hopfully my friends will be there when it happens :)

If anyone wants an account, I still have a buddy code.

Alternatively, if anyone wants a collectors edition account, you can have mine.

I played for like a week, and couldn't force myself to afterwards.

What a waste.

im a big final fantasy fan and will be playing this as soon as i get the new pc together. I've been reading about all the updates and keep telling myself it cat be that bad.... wouldnt expect anything but a grind to end game

is this nothing like ffxi? i had 3 crafts 90+ fishing at 100 with lu shangs rod and 2 characters at 75... was a lot of grinding with parties but that was fun right?

in ffxiv u cant form a party, grab a chocobo, and head to a good exp spot for a few hours of fun?

is this true? you cant form party? FFXI was all party base and that's what I like about the FFXI because if your party sucks, you'll not going to get alot of xp. I like a group/party base game.

Being an FFXI player, I think it safe to say that FFXIV is nothing like FFXI - minus a few arguable points. It is my understanding that it was the prior producer's goal to intentionally NOT make FFXIV like FFXI. However, with all of the feedback from players being ignored during the Beta periods regarding this, the producer continued down the path of a NON-FFXI like MMO. I could be wrong, it was just what I had read in the Beta Forums at the time.

While there are those who dont want a FFXI 2 game, and I can agree with that, at the same time, I do want the funamentals that are Final Fantasy in a Final Fantasy game. While I am not the most die-hard FF person, I was truely disheartened during the Beta and CE early start about how Non-FF the game felt.

Again, with my opinion being pre- 1.15a patch centered, grinding in parties was NOT fun. It was actually a hinderance. You were more effective solo...as slow as that can be. My LS did GuildLeve's every night. We pushed hard for 3 to 5 hours to get them all grinded out, linked up, and such to maximze SP gains. However, thru personal math (which could be WAY off) I had concluded that if I spent the same amount of time in a mine killing Puk's vs Being off with my LS Leve-Grinding - I would come out with more SP. The only drawback was not getting the Class based token rewards for turning in Leve's, or earning the reputation to spawn NM's.

After 3 weeks of the same Leve's, I decided I had enough. Unlike FFXI where you could find a "camp" and just have the puller do the work bringing mobs in a chain to the group, the 15 man Guild Leve parties are CONSTANTLY on the move. Its GO GO GO for 5 hours. The social aspect of the group is lost due to having to constantly move (I use a controller, so my KB is far) I dont have time to type. Voice chat is OK, but 15 people trying to talk doesnt work either. Its just not the same as the smaller XP groups where you had time to socialize during XP runs.

While I'm not attempting to discourage anyone from playing, I think its helpful to understand that FFXIV was intentionally "Not-FFXI" from the beginning, and the new producer and team will need time to slowly convert the game from what it is, to what it needs to be. When that happens, I certainly hope I'll be back to enjoy it :)

See that's where they made a mistake of making this as a Not FFXI like. The system on FFXI works well and it just needed a little tweak to make it more appealing to casual gamers. I love the FFXI game system where you can solo to lvl 10 and start partying. Those first 10 levels gives you the time to learn the system and from then on, you need to learn how to be an effective member to maximize the xp in group. if 1 member out of 6 not doing their job, your party wouldnt be as effective as the other parties.

I hope they bring back the FFXI play style and the system that works on FFXI. Also the skillchain is way better than what they have right now. (whatever that is). Also bring backt he auction house. Kind of stupid not to have that. IMO

Its going to be a long fight on the AH, I believe. One of the "Letters from the Producer" in response to the first player poll hit on it, if I recall correctly. While he seemed to smirk at the idea that an AH is required, he seems to be under the belief that there is another way. Now...I dont know if "another way" can be interpreted as "more effective" or "just different". Personally, its not of importance to me. I rarely use an AH in any game, other than a loot dump. That being said, the current retainer system seems a bit too cumbersome for its purpose.

The ONE thing, and ONE thing alone my old FFXI LS and I were hoping for the most...were Skill Chains. Talk about super bummer mode when we were told these were revamped to be Battle Regimes...Regiments...something. Again, another attempt at NOT being FFXI - bleh.

The one thing we really had fun with in FFXI was the role you brought to the table in a 6 man party. Maximizing your effectiveness with the roles that were brought by the other players, and testing our skills against pull after pull of mob from a camp. Once we got our groove down, it was all about hitting that Magic Burst, knocking the mob over, and getting the next one pulled before the current one was dead to keep that XP chain rolling! Because it was with friends, no DPS charts (at the time anyway), there was zero pressure to perform, other than get the job you're here to perform done, every pull. Chatting, laughing, and challenging eachother each pull was what made the game for us. The feel of combat, the lighting effects, and the "Ooh and Aaah" of a well timed Skillchain/Burst helped us just want to keep going.

The 15 man thing just ruins all of that. You end up with 3 or 4 "Leaders" of the group all claiming "Follow me!". Most nights my LS had up to 7 "Healers" in the group. Generally what happens is either everyone heals, and it takes all day to kill mobs, or NO one heals, and we have to wait for the tanks to run back. (Fortunately with Raise/Rez, we were able to shorten that time). Now...take a group that's used to having too many casters, and have a night where there are only 2 casters. OMG nightmare. As one of the 2 healers, we end up with a 3 to 5 mob pull - tanks are scattered to the 4 corners of the earth, and no one happens to catch the 1 that got loose and straight up ATE one of the 2 healers. Now, 1 healer cant keep up, tanks go down, and now all of a sudden "this LS sucks!" *sigh* With 15 man - there hasnt been a real need to delegate roles/responsibilites. After a while we caught on that 4 healers is nice - 1 dedicated to a tank (usually we had 3), and the 4th is an all round spot healer or backup healer. So...while we as players adapted, it still feels empty.
