Anyone else got the expansion pack yet? I picked it up and played through it. Even though I knew what to expect having played FEAR a lot in the past I was still blown away and scared out of my britches. Yes, there were some scenes that made me jump back in my chair and cry like a little girl, in fact tonight I think I'm sleeping with a light on :D

Seriously, there are some new scares here that are great, the entire hospital level freaked me the hell out. I'm already freaked by hospitals and this really didn't help  There is one scene in there that just AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I won't spoil it for you, you have to experience it for yourself. The music if perfect and sets the mood througout the entire game.

Beyond the scares the graphics are superb, even better than the first game. There are some scenes in here that blow my mind with the in-game settings at their highest settings. Being able to run with AA and AF at a very high resolution greatly helps in this game. I am so glad they finally gave us some new environments, I just wish there were some day scenes, doing everyting at night kind of gets a little boring having to use the flashlight all the time.

I was surprised it came on 2 CD's, it is actually pretty long for an expansion pack. Well worth the money.

My favorite weapon is the laser gun :D

What an incredibly fun game, period.

I'll just copy & paste what I wrote in the other Extraction Point forum:

I've finished it...
Clocked in at a little less than 7 hours; not too shabby for an expansion.

Basically... I enjoyed it. More of the same is a good thing. The new weapons are a godsend (particularly the laser gun & the turrets), the environments are fantastic and much more varied than last time around (although sometimes perplexing... that Subway is HUGE... and there's a Brooklyn Subway map!!! ), the difficulty has been taken up a notch, and overall the game is very enjoyable.

Unfortunately, the story suffers from the "search for more money" treatment (shit that makes absolutely no sense and basically negates everything you did in the original), and the game can be a little too dark for it's own good.
This is the average lighting situation in the game:

Note: I'm running it with Soft Shadows so that's why there's no FSAA.

But yeah... overall, not bad. The ending is completely underwhelming and dissappointing, though. I'm hoping there's multiple endings (there's a part in the game where you have 3 decisions to make), and that I got the worst one, but I won't know until sometime tomorrow when I play from that point again.

It's already out ?
I guess I'll have to wait a month or so before it gets here (Portugal)... Or I'll just have to order it online...
Been playing FEAR Combat lately and I simply loved FEAR. After playing the Extraction Point Demo, I even created a video to work as a trailer for it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=038KUkAIieg

Can't wait to play this!!

I'm about halfway through it and I'm underwhelmed so far. The combat is as good as ever, obviously, but the rest of it just feels really clumsy, as is often the case when somebody else takes the reins of a successful game.

The pacing is all wrong. There is virtually no plot to speak of - the story barely advances from the first game which is a huge letdown considering what this game is picking up from. It's just a bunch of random, meaningless scares interspersed with gunfights. Other NPCs also see the ghosts etc, which just totally fails to capture the tone and atmosphere of FEAR, IMO. The amazing cinematic qualities are simply not there. Hopefully I'll change my mind later on?

They've also lifted ideas from other games in a lazy attempt to freshen things up. Let's see, deployable auto turrets, breakable crates, teammates following you? Hmm, sounds familiar...

The new weapons are cool and all, but stuff like that just feels so glaringly tacked-on since they weren't in the first game. The environments are a little over-familiar also, I don't have a problem with the night time setting, but less recycled textures would have been good.

Does anyone else feel that the frame rate is a lot lower than the 1st one?

Keep playing, the story line continues greatly, especially towards the end of the game.

Yes, the framerates seem lower in the expansion pack, it is more graphics intensive.

Thanks for the info Brent, right now im in the process of haeding to the Hospital. So far the only new weapon ive tried is the laser gun and boy was it fun, even though the happiness only lasted for 10sec cause I got a little too trigger happy :D . Hopefully this game can be used as a benchmark at [H]ardOCP.

In fact I will be using it...

If you want to cheat hit T and type guns this will give you all the weapons in the game with full ammo, then to refil ammo just hit T and type ammo. I love watching people explode from the Laser Gun.

Well I did pick the game up after all and played for about 1 1/2 hours. So far its alright although alot that goes on sure seems to clash with just about everything you did in the original in terms of story. Im refering to the whole Paxton Fettel scene of course just as an example.

Im going to finish playing thro it but from what ive played it looks like a typical expansion pack. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well, I finished it, and IMO it completely sucked.

If anything, the second half was even worse than the first. The last two levels right up to the (wholly unsatisfying) ending was just one big load of blah. You kind of get the feeling that they were just making it up as they went along, and then just got bored and ended it.

There is no storyline in this game. Nothing makes sense or forms a cohesive plot. It just meanders around, throwing random spooky things at you with no explanation. The game tells you where you're going, but never explains why. Oh, and the guys with the twitchy heads ripped straight out of Silent Hill... please. The cameo from Norton Mapes (no spoilers here)... FFS. It's like reading a really bad fan-fiction.

Look at the intricately detailed backstory that was in FEAR; the almost film-like direction, the ways that plot points are discovered or hinted at, the perfectly balanced action and horror segments, being gripped by the frantic chase to catch the bad guy, the final climax. Extraction Point has none of this. It's not even all that clear who the bad guy actually is this time!

I hope Monolith's true sequel to FEAR does it justice, because Extraction Point most certainly does not. As far as I'm concerned it's an unofficial sequel... a crappy remix.

Just got it. I have only played about an hour but I think it is great so far. My opinion is probably biased because aside from playing Xenosaga II and Paper Mario all I do is play FEAR mp.

Just beat the games. WTF was that?

This is a perfect example of a good game going to a bad developer for expansion.
The story was horrible. Im glad i just got the torrent for this one.

Over all tho the gameplay was decent but i just cant get over that massacre of an ending.

God Damn it im angry.

So the general consensus is shit story but good action. The original game did both well

Im angry to see suck a massacre of a good series with horrible story. I bought FEAR and would have bought this to if i had not see the ign review.

Just finished it, it was flipping awesome. Loved the new spooks and action. The new weapons are killer, especially the red laser cutter gun and the minigun. :D \m/

You're too picky, and are expecting too much. It offered a lot of things for the price and the new level design and NPCs were a lot cooler and you need to relax :p

Got this today and I played through the first interval and part of the second... fantastic. The shootouts in EP are at least as good as anything in the original FEAR... the game still feels extremely well put together in terms of design and it is very entertaining so far.

I bet you liked Alien Resurrection as well. ;)

You're kidding right? There's hardly any story development in the whole game. Furthermore, when the game is over you're pretty much at the same place story-wise that you were at the end of the original!

6/10 for the game

Story wise little has developed, helicopter goes down due to Alma, Paxton Fettel somehow activates the replica soldier even though he is dead. I've only played Interval 1 so far but so far so good. The action is very intense on the hard difficulty setting.

Well yeah, but this is an expansion pack. Not FEAR 2. I think that the problem people are having with this is exactly that: This isn't the sequel to FEAR.

It's more of the same, I love it. The gunfights are a splendid orgy of violence - it seems to be a notch harder than the original game, the F9 key is being used prolifically so far!

The game runs well, 1280 x 960 (where's 1024?) with 2x AA and 16x AS with most things at maximum. The game stutters very occasionally when loading in new stuff - I guess 2Gigs of RAM would improve things here.

ive been having an annoying issue with this. all my drivers are up to date and eveything. whenever i try to load up a level everything is fine, but when it finished loading my screen is blank and im at 0FPS, and i mean nothing, i'll hear sounds (very distorted) and nothing else. i managed to get it to play once but not again. this happened to me with Combat too, but id just re-connect to a server with a different map and it'd go away.

I played about 2 hours last night and think it is barely "ok". There are just too many places where they restrict movement in ways they shouldn't, like "See that flimsy door right there. Well you are a supersoldier but you can't bust it down". Um, duh, yes I could except for that @#(%@(#$ Red hand sign.

I guess Im tired of playing games where they run you on rails with only a single path you can take. Harumph.

Im not sure if the AI has gotten better or if it is just the fact that they always seem to have more cover to shoot from at the start than you do but it has gotten rather difficult to kill them quickly.

Gameplay =10
Graphics =10
Sound =10
Scare factor =10
Story = They better explain everything in FEAR 2 because this one raised more questions then anything, I killed Fattel personally in FEAR. That's my only thing with the game.

Fattel does make reference to you killing him near the start of the game in the church.

This game sucks.

I'm currently just starting to play the regular Fear game though.
Never played Fear with expantion pack or read a review on it.

J/K

If they would have included the new weapons and enemies from Extraction Point in the original F.E.A.R., It would have been even better than I originally thought it was.

This game felt like a internet community mod. There were a few battles I would want to replay, but other than that, no replay value, no story development. :(

yeah with a line "I know it doesn't make sense, but nothing makes sense anymore" that doesn't really explain it, now does it?

Also in the first game it was never quite clear whether you actually do kill him yourself, since it happens during a vision. And if you did kill him for real, it's pretty obvious that he wanted you to, since he's just kneeling there. And then in extraction point he says "you killed me.. I didn't like that". Timegate FAILS.

I distinctly remember putting a number of bullets into Fattel with him just standing there and not during a vision.

I am nearly finished.

It's great for what it is......raw shooting. Some of the effects are better than the original. I see alot more guys flying through the air, and alot more arms and legs missing their bodies.

Pros: excellent graphics
more large groups of enemies
new weapons....love the turrents
a few more heavies (I just love to hear them short out once they're dead)
the music was well matched to the scene
those little guys with the red eyes
Cons: I have a good system and I've seen framerates dive like a wounded duck, didnt happen in the original.
story is a bit weak and disjointed.
scenery is a bit duplicated and familiar
I really like this expansion, it is exactly as advertised. I'm in 7+ hours and not done yet.

It was a vision.
He was in the cell from the intro... you pop him in the head, and you're back in the room with his and Alice's body.
