Fallout 76

I think I'm going to roll with the Holy Fire and Plasma Caster combo until they inevitably nerf them both into the ground. I like that they benefit from the same cards and I can dish out the same damage as all of those low health/bloodied clones running around.
I'm mildly interested in maining the gauss shotgun (it's about to get re-buffed), but the catch is that the cards it uses offer zero flexibility for a secondary.

I find the chasing of god builds comical in FO76. Its already easy at my "I play what drops" setup. Im level 230 something. I run a quad enclave sniper barrel rifle and tesla dual shot rifle, single shot speed. All of my rolls on my secret service armor is whatever I initially made, no rampant rerolling. The only tuning I did was cards to make sense for my build. Even with that, when solo, I can drop everything with ease, granted some 100 mutants take 5-6 shots to die. Only time I struggle is when I join group events of level 500+ players and the bullet sponge effect skyrockets. The supermutant hoard attacking the radiation collector one as example.

So far in my leisure play, I already have 14 legendary mods in stash and 6 learned plans. If I need caps I just make some mods and sell them. Its odd though that I have far more 1 star mods than 3 star so Im not sure how the roll logic works. Will be funny if someone uses a hard to get mod now just to have the weap nerfed and becomes weak.

Honestly, once you get over around level 200'ish there really isn't much to do except chasing rare drops/items. By that point you've done all the story missions and played every event, campaign, and op a zillion times. I guess there might be the thrill of finding a rare plan for something you've been chasing for your CAMP, but there isn't much else. It always makes me wonder how those people that are over level 1000 aren't bored to tears. Outside of a handful of items (or now mod recipes), I pretty much have everything that isn't paid or cosmetic. I've only been back playing for 3 months. Some of those folks never left.

I agree there. I only play when I'm sitting on a meeting or have another show in the background I'm "watching". I ran across a level 2100+ player the other day and was just astounded on how you can put that time in and have any interest left. There's still some events I haven't played. I tend just to wander and see if I can find anything new. Even at my level I still at times find something small I never saw before. Hell I just last week discovered serums in the enclave science center. It never dawned on me that I missed that section. I saw them for sale in peoples stores but I thought they just had some high level unlock or purchase. I never understood how players ran so fast or jumped so high, now I do. If I'm trying to do anything its get full sets of magazines or get an achievement. I did a few caravans, what a waste of time that is.

The caravans are teh suxxx. They're either super easy or your brahmin gets insta-killed or glitches out. I guess there's a gun you can get if you do enough of them, but it's gonna take more than that to make me want to run any more. If you help other people you only get like 5 supply items rather than the 30-50 you get if you run your own. It's only barely worth bothering.

My wife told me about the serums (she was playing when they were first added), so I've steadily bought up those recipes every time I've had excess caps. At 17-22K each, they're pricey AF, but I have most of them. I have spares of the actual serums in case something glitches and I lose my mutations, too. I guess that occasionally happens even if you have the cards that prevent it.

I think the lack of other compelling games have kept me playing longer than I planned. I'm attempting to round up a full set of T65 power armor + good mods and that's at least a little motivation to keep going.

I kinda wish I had made my character on a custom world to bump the difficulty settings. I'm not one for insanely challenging games but I need to at least feel something lol.

At least a some point (along with the 4-star legendaries) they're bringing back raids. That's something that could breathe some life back into the endgame. As long as they don't take 3-4 hours and you can pile on with some randos I think that could be fun. I'd like something akin to the missions in AC/Pitt but 2-3x longer. Beyond that, I'm not sure what else they could really do without just enlarging the map again and again. I'm still hoping they'll come up some some alternative build options that match low-health/high-rads.
I'm thinking that they mostly intend for players to come and go. There will probably always be those hardcores that love grinding, but the game has to allow for people to bail and come back without being lost.

Spent a lot of time searching for a way to remove the game's native blue tint (the same way FO3 is green, and NV is yellow).
I knew it was possible to do with ReShade but didn't know how. Googling just returns a bunch of people saying "it's your monitor" lol.

Anyway I was scrolling Nexus and saw this.

While it affects the entire game, it's really noticable in interiors.

I managed to finally get enough stamps for the auto-axe + electric mod and I ran through enough caravans to get the V63 carbine. Now I'll never need to mess with either of those things again :p At least minus expedition ammo farming. Now I just need a couple hundred more gold to finally get the last part of the T65. Honestly, that might be it for me for a while. At least until the next feature drop. The decent stuff over level 100 in the seasons store is all Fallout 1st, and it doesn't look like the black cat robots are gonna be available.

EDIT: The robotic black cat finally showed up and I now have my set of T65 armor + the decent mods. I even managed to learn the overeater's mod recipe (aka. the one really powerful full-health build mod) along the way. I think this weekend is probably gonna be my last hurrah until the next season.

Edit: Just played for about an hour. Interiors are slightly darker, but it's barely noticable for me. If I didn't see posts about it I probably wouldn't have noticed a difference. The new lighting overall does look better.
As a side note, they cranked Bloom way up, it's actually making my eyes hurt. I was able to lower it (or disable it) by tweaking this value. Setting it to 0 disables Bloom entirely, the pre-patch visual is now somewhere around 0.2 I think.

Today's patch has altered the lighting of the game. (Ignore my workstation mod :p)
It's darker, but reflections look better. Look at the floor mats and the sides of the stash boxes.

Some people are saying DoF has been changed but I play with that off. And some interiors (like caves) are much darker and require the flashlight now.

Top is from pre-patch (October 12th), bottom is now.
Open the pics in 2 tabs and swap between.

I definitely notice a difference to the visuals in some areas. Everything in the Whitespring looks covered in dust and darker. I figured it was just a Halloween thing, but I guess it's just what they're going for. I'm fine with that. Hopefully they make night/day look more distinct. There are lots of posts about how it's never night anymore. Technically it IS night, the game just isn't (or at least wasn't) very dark.

If anyone is looking to start the game or pop back in after a layoff, now's a pretty good time. The Halloween stuff is fun (and not disruptive to the experience) and they've been fleshing the game out more for years. I can't imagine things getting all that much better in the short term.

I see they continue the trend of breaking things with every content launch. Event notifications are broken and you can no longer sort based on weight or stack weight.

Seems par for the course. Their last big update definietely broke as many things as it fixed. I'm just glad I can now see quest icons in my power armor. Some missions are a colossal pain without it.

I don't usually complain about gfx too much but the new lighting system looks god awful in sunlight.
The redditor who posted this pic describes it accurately: It looks like everything is drenched in mercury.

I played a few hours yesterday and frankly it was very distracting. My 1st sub was set to renew but I think I will leave it idle until Bethesda or a modder fixes it.

I haven't run into any visuals that bad, but I definitely think the new changes make the game look worse. Loads of console players (especially PS5) have been complaining about crashing issues, so I kinda wonder if the new graphical changes might be related to that. The game is 6 years old, so it's pretty dated looking even at its best. The new changes took it from a 5 to a 4.5, so I'm not sure I care that much.
I'm kinda curious how the new update (with the raid, ability to become a ghoul, 4-star legendaries, and pets) is going to work. Feels like that's a whole lot of stuff, so they might do what they just did and roll things out in stages.

VATS and weak spot nerfs coming.

https://bethesda.net/en/article/3SB...-the-vault-gleaming-depths-public-test-server
  • Made adjustments to most creatures' body part damage and VATS hit chances, reduced the bonus damage on most weak points from 2.0x to 1.5x.
  • VATS hit chance on head, limbs, and various weak points has been reduced for most creatures.
  • Adjusted VATS hit chance on a few creatures' torsos (a few are slightly higher and a few are slightly lower)

My VATS hit chance on headshots has been reduced by about half, however the new Four Leaf Clover now fills my crit meter by about 20% on each miss. Around 3/4 of my shots are already crits, the old Four Leaf Clover never did much for me anyway. Those extra crits combined with Concentrated Fire giving +20% hit on each shot, I don't really notice a difference.

I mostly use VATS for hitting things I can't see, so I doubt I'll notice much difference...although my luck is super high since I have a pile of cards I need down there.
What's funny is that I had no idea how VATS critical hits even worked for the longest time. I didn't figure it out until there was a daily quest that required I land 5 of them on some rando enemy. They should probably cover that in one of the in-game tutorials.

That sucks as I use vats all the time. Usually get 1000 damage hits and 2300-2500 crits.......

I usually crit every other hit, so accuracy isn't that big of an issue.

The grind to get very specific legendary mods (or even better, unlocking the plans) = pretty wild. Seems like everybody and their mom is dumping the trash ones that boost damage to mutants and robots, but Bloodied, Overeaters, Unyielding (especially), etc. can go for 15K caps each if not more...and it can be warranted. Even some of the more obscure ones that give weight reduction, auto-stims, or specific stat boosts can get way up there, too. That's assuming you can even find someone selling 'em. The odds of getting them naturally is so low, it's quite the slog. Tough to imagine the game ever making them easier to get, too. If they do, you have to think you'll have to use gold or stamps or some kind of side currency. Feels like I'm seeing way fewer low health builds lately and I imagine Unyielding's rarity is playing a role.

Just passively hit 100 for the season today, I've been using the random boosters it gives me but otherwise just ignoring the objectives.
Although I did get excited when I noticed the espresso machine on the rewards page... All the useless cosmetic stuff feels like a waste of time. Rank 150 for the repeatables is definitely out of reach for me, unfortunately.

On an unrelated note I would kill for a tent with a workstation and ammo box.

As dumb as it seems, having coffee and/or tea machines in camp = fantastic. I bought 'em with gold bars over the summer and I use 'em constantly. Coffee lasts forever and the tea goes bad extremely slowly. If it's about to go south, you can sell it for a decent amount. Ditto with purified water, pemmican, dog food, candy, etc. I'm all-in with overeaters/carnivore so that's another reason to have all that stuff around.
I'm at level 130'ish for the season, so theoretically I should get the repatables. I don't really care all that much, though. The gold is the only thing I actually want/need. I pop on and do the dailies most days and it only takes like 10-15 minutes on my lunch break. The weeklies are a a little more of a pain, but I can usually knock 'em out in an hour on Sunday afternoon.

Fallout 1st is free for 1 week although I think you only get the tent, ammo box, and scrapbox, plus the 10% score boost.
Good time to login and dump all your excess junk and ammo into the boxes at least.

If you already have 1st you can claim it for another 10% score boost.

I was kinda wondering about that. Will you ammo and junk disappear after this trial is over or is there something else to how it works? The score boost has been pretty nice if nothing else.

I did some digging because I might be interested in this, and I found that your scrapbox and ammo storage boxes stick around, even if you're no longer a Fallout 1st member, you just can't put more items into them.

Plus just remember to claim all your exclusive Atomic Shop items while Fallout 1st is active. You keep all rewards even if you no longer have Fallout 1st, but you can only claim them with an active subscription.

Good to know. I don't think the trial actually unlocks any exclusives that I can see. I was kinda hoping for some better skins to my power armor or a snazzy icon, but it seems like those things are still gated.
I've got a fair amount of junk I've kept for the sake of upgrading oddball weapons/armor, so I'll try tossing that stuff into a scrapbox. I'm rocking some cards that lower the weight of ammo by a lot, so I find myself carrying boatloads of it instead of storing it.

Prior free Fallout 1st weeks they gave away Ranger armor and emotes and some other stuff. Maybe things are different from the last time?

Yup, it's definitely different. The only freebie I'm seeing (other than the scrapbox and ammo box) is the Mr. Fuzzy workbench. No emotes, no icons, no skins, etc.
Free is free, but I would have liked those other things.
Looks like next week Minerva will be selling a metric boatload of items including some skins and the full set of secret service gear. Maybe I'll just buy some of that stuff off of her. I've been stockpiling gold, so I should be able to afford most everything.

That sucks, I might still go for it and give 76 a 4th try, maybe this time I will like it?

At its core, it's the same game it was 6 years ago. There's a whole lot more to do (which was the main reason I left), but the mechanical differences are minimal even vs. the launch version of the game. If the core gameplay was the issue, that's probably not going to make a difference. If you ran out of things to do, totally different story. I don't think I completed all of the core content until I was something like level 170.

See I haven't played it since they added human and non robot NPC's.
To me the game was super empty and boring. It always felt like I was playing No Man's Sky and grinding for resources the whole first couple of hours.

Plus I just couldn't get use to the camp thing and the first one that I did set up, I couldn't find it after I set it up, and when I did find it, it had been stripped clean.

Now it seems they have "fleshed" the game out and I've been feeling very compelled to play it again, especially with all the new content that has been added since I last logged into it.

I'm just afraid it will still feel the same to me, even with all the new content/NPC's etc.

Maybe? A good way to try things out is to fire up a new game/character and immediately head toward the Wayward. That's a new human-centric bar at the foot of the Vault 76 hill. Do the quests they give you and don't worry about anything else until you're done. Those missions will introduce you to the humans running around, CAMP building, and most of the things you need to know early on. You'll gain a bunch of levels, too. If you like those missions, the game is probably right for you right now. If not, bail.

In general, the best way to approach the missions now = Wayward > Original Overseer's Recordings > Brotherhood of Steel > New Overseer's Quest > Anything related to the Pitt and Atlantic City > Vault 63/Dark Hollow > Caravans. The last few can be done out of order, but I wouldn't mess with any of those until you've completed the original Overseer's quest and kill the scorchbeast queen. That typically happens somewhere between level 40-75 depending on how many side missions and events you do.

That sounds a lot better than me roaming aimlessly around looking for something to kill.
THX. I have this copy and pasted in my notes as a mini guide when I get back into this.

Pretty much the only other thing I'd mention is that melee is a particularly strong option that people sometimes forget about. Especially once you have access to power armor and/or more durable normal armors. It's 100% viable for every single story mission in the game and having melee people is a blessing in most events. It isn't great for most Expeditions or Cavavans, but you can always switch to a distance weapon for those.

I didn't think I'd care about VATS accuracy, but it really is pretty sloppy right now. I use it all the time for zapping stuff at a distance, enemies behind foliage/objects, etc. and it whiffs constantly now. Whatever % is shows seems to be off by 25-30%. The fact that the plasma caster's sights are teh suxxx inadvertently made that weapon way worse than it should be.

Any of y'all happen to have any Unyeilding mods? I need 2 more for a set. I've got like 20K caps and like 40 other random legendary mods I can swap for 'em. I haven't seen anyone selling one in forever and I can't seem to ever get one via scrapping.

Whew. After patrolling around and looking at a bunch of user vendors, I finally found a 5th Unyeilding mod. I put together a suit of cranked up Secret Service gear that pushes all of my stats into the upper 30's and 40's when low in health. It's interesting, but maybe not the end-all-be-all considering how many people are gunning for that. It's great for dailies and wandering, but you die really, really easily in any event/op where the enemies aren't super weak. Plus, even with all the bonuses, serums, bloodied mods, and buff cards, I'm not seeing that big of a change in damage. It's higher, but it's kinda going from overkill to really overkill in exchange for dying in like 2 hits. I'm thinking vampire might be safer, but then you lose the damage boost you're going out of your way to get. I dunno.

Either way, I've maxed out my seasonal stuff and I'm only a couple levels away from 400. With the Fallout 1st scrapbox and ammo dump freeing up my stash, I'm pretty much locked and loaded for the forseeable future. I think I might bail for a while and come back when the pets and 4-star mods finally hit. I can't really think of anything else to do.

Welp, I'm moving on at last. After tinkering around with the bloodied/low-health thing for a bit, I'd say that it's not as insanely strong as I thought it would be. My stats are all super high, but that doesn't necessarily lead to the huge damage boosts you might expect. You can get 90% of the way there with a full-health build + anti-armor and you run zero risk of dying. Especially with heavy weapons since there are so many booster cards for them. Yeah, it's neat to run super fast, jump super high, get more XP, etc. but you have to stay alert. That's even with all the cards that make things miss, richochet, dodge, etc. you can die in a hurry. Especially with AOE effects. It's powerful with things things like Gun Fu, Adrenaline, Improved Criticals, etc. but never so powerful that I ever truly felt I couldn't go back. Charging into battle with T65 armor and a flamer basically gives you the same result. Especially if you don't have a large (or competent) team. That's more of just an FYI if you're looking for a singular build to focus on. I'd err on the side of power armor. You're basically unkillable outside of reflective enemies or standing in a poison cloud. If you stumble upon an Unyeilding plan, rock on, but I'd say it's not the end-all-be-all I expected considering how many people seem to flock to it.
