Fallout 4

I'll test out the GameWorks stuff tonight, but I'm only running a single lowly GTX 970 so I'm not going in optimistic, might have to drop it to 1080p to stay above 60FPS unless they made some crazy optimizations.
I have a 980 ti and to get a decent frame rate even without this new shit I already have to drop it to 1080p to get a solid frame rate.

There are some messed up places with occlusion and shadows/fog that I think murder your framerate way more than they should. Hopefully this patch or others will help with that.

Well seeing as how I've been a NVIDIA fan boy since back in the Ti4600 days...It's about frekking time we have a PhysX feature included in a AAA title.....Just switched over to the FO4 Beta......Gonna see how it looks

EDIT-So any1 know if the new weapon debris effects is only with the mini gun? I don't see any different with the sub machine gun or other weapons....

Just to update the thread and my issue...I opted into the beta....Fallout 4 updates via steam and now it shows fallout4-beta in my library. But when I launch the game, I do not have the HBOA option in my settings...and if I use the minigun I see no debris PhysX....Don't know what I did wrong...

JUST FYI-I fixed my issue my verifying the files...2 files were corrupted and upon relaunching Steam...I get the new Beta options now....Hope this helps any1 with similar issues

Where's that?

I have the settings cranked with mods and boosted textures galore, seldom a murdered framerate around. Granted I have an watercooled OC'd 980 versus your 970, I suppose. OTOH you have a better CPU and chipset. Maybe I just don't notice sub 60fps as much as others, or maybe other people expect 120fps all the time.

This is what I've been using with my Galax GTX 970 EXOC Black:

I can maintain 60FPS in most situations, there are the situations in the city and a couple other places where it drops into the 50's and 40's, but it hangs in there quite well.

I enabled PhysX and HBAO+ and FPS often dropped into the 40s/50s, I figure the drop had more to do with the HBAO+ than PhysX since I don't think I even noticed any particle effects from the weapons. I just noticed I had the distance and object fade details set to ultra, maybe I can reclaim some frames settings those to high instead... I should probably just drop it to 1080p.

I think I just need to put this game down and start it up when I upgrade video cards in two years.

EDIT: Actually, weapon debris is set to Ultra, not sure why that is 'low' in this picture, I must've hit something. Edit2: I was wrong here, weapon debris must be the PhysX stuff, I disable that.

Dude I'm on 980 Ti's in SLI....I drop in the 40's when in combat in the open with explosions, etc....Albeit I play at 4k...I still set Godrays to medium and everything else Ultra....Even though this game uses the old engine, it still eats GPU cycles with Ultra settings and high res....Think your 970 is working just fine....

I've found that God Rays being enabled at all is a huge framerate killer. Even on Low it was murdering my FPS, had to turn it off.

Shadow distance is the setting that jacks up the framerate in spots as it is a cpu dependent setting and even an oced 4770k cant keep 60 fps on Ultra.

Have a weird bug where any upgrades to X-01 power armor reverts back to MIII default after leaving it

I've heard some weird X-01 bugs can be resolved by putting the pieces onto a different power armor frame.

Mainly in dense city areas, like around the Corvega plant for instance. Also, some indoor areas have some fog/particle effects that cut my framerate in half (or more).

what about the new beta patch that brings HBAO+?
I was able to play the game at 4K DSR on a GTX980 Ti SLI at an average of 60FPS with a minimum of 52FPS.

Will HBAO+ lower my minimum framerate by a lot?

Huh. Hinky.

I'm using Fallout4 Settings Editor to crank the performance higher than the stock tool allows (higher quality shadows, actor shadows, 50% higher LOD distances, larger cell loading radii).....only time I notice hesitation much is if I'm snapping a screencap or transitioning to VATS. My Gigabyte 980 is at 1400 core right now when gaming, could go higher but it doesn't get me anything meaningful. I've never FRAPs'd this game with this card but I've never felt the need.

I notice lots of slow downs even with my SLI 980s running 1680x1050 with everything maxed except god rays. It is fine for the most part but the heavy city areas can still suffer a lot.

is there any reason why you have a SLI of high end cards with a 1680x1050 monitor?

That is probably purely because of SLI. 2560x1600 native here. 1x 980 runs fine.

Just unplug or turn off your second card. at 1680x1050 SLI is only hurting your framerates not helping.

because maxing shit out is still slow on a lot of games and I don't have a better monitor yet. turning off the second card makes things worse btw...not better. when the SLI driver came out, things got much better.

Not just this game, I can name others that also do not run 60fps 99% of time at that res with maxed out settings.

yup that worked thanks :)
If you run certain mods the armor can reset when the cell reloads as you travel back into it. Only fix currently is to purchase another fframe or get the mod that allows you to scrap then craft a new one.

Just got a 48MB update, anyone know what it changed? Already downloaded the gameworks update so this must be something new.

Edit: Never mind, looks like it fixed the load times

Has the update broken any mods for anyone? I use several texture mods and some other stuff, just wanting to mitigate damage before I jump to the beta build.

i experience some crashes after about 30 minutes of play with mods. i don't know if it is related to mods but i went back to non beta and no more crashes

Um 980 SLI at a modest 1680x1050 and using an old cpu? You are cpu limited in nearly every possible scenario and your system probably takes crap at times due to all the cpu overhead of pushing 980 SLI at such a low res.

This game needs a cpu from the future to handle shadow distance above medium in parts of the cities as even my 4770k at 4.3 will drop to low 50s. So turn that setting to medium and disable your second 980 and you will easily get 60 fps.

At that low of a res you are forcing less load on the GPU's and more onto the CPU...and that old i7 920 is already a slight bottleneck. All that is assuming base game and not a ton of graphics mods that would force the load back onto the GPU's.

2x980's in SLI should max almost every game out there at 1440p res, assuming you have enough CPU to feed them.

I would be curious to see your GPU usage while in game at that low res. I have a hunch it won't be maxed out.

I agree with the others, your CPU is a serious bottleneck for the GPUs,
I hope that both GPUs are running at 16x PCI Express 2.0 because 8x PCI Express 2.0 is another bottleneck for this cards.

The patch is a good one IMO. I have had no problems and my two buddies that run even more mods than me have reported no problems yet. My opinion is try the patch. Just back up your saved games just in case.

Good info, thanks. I will try the patch next time I play the game.

Just updated my game and now when I load a save, it looks like this when I start:

Picture

If I turn a bit, it will sometimes go away or the white will shift around, but then it will come back. I've tried fast travelling and the same thing happens.

I'm using ENB and Reshade, as well as some texture mods and whatnot but nothing else that should affect the graphics. Any ideas?

EDIT: I think I figured it out...ENB broke it it looks like.

AMD GPUs take the lead with new drivers & patch, particularly with higher levels of AO.

....maybe you missed how the GTX980 is still faster than that R9 280 you singled out and is also faster than the R9 290X....and what is more strange is that last gen AMD GPUs (R9 200) are faster than this gen (R9 300)

My system runs this anywhere from 25-50 fps outdoors. Not bad for an old system at 2560 x 1440 but I think I may run it on my big screen at 1080p so that I can smooth it out a bit and play on the couch.
Not fully enjoying the Sanctuary clean up. Took up my last hour of gameplay trying to figure that out and I'm still not done.

Here's another question: why are the Fury X and Fury X Crossfire the exact same performance?

Everything related to Sanctuary is optional. The game can be completed fully without ever doing anything with Sanctuary or even getting anyone to live there. If it's not something you're enjoying, you can safely move on and come back later/never.

Looking forward to seeing how the update improves performance on my 290 @ 4K. Lowered loading times will be a welcome change for sure.

So I'm slightly out of touch with all the CPU stuff, what makes it a bottleneck? Low cache amounts or something?

nvidia inspector says card zero is 3.0 @ 2.0x16 and card two is 3.0 @1.1x16 whatever that means.

interesting...card have different bios revisions. never noticed that.
