So I just built a new computer, using the following parts:
i7 920
Radeon 4850X2
P6T Delux
OCZ PC3 12800 (3x 2gigs)
and a Corsair 850 W PSU (and peripherals)
I installed everything, and tried to boot it up. The computer WILL turn on, the fans, HDD's, CD drive, etc, has power. Lights come on on the motherboard, etc. However, there is zero video output. The graphics card gets hot, but the fans never budge. Also, I cannot turn the computer off by use of power button, pressing it or holding it (both the one on case and the one directly on the mobo), I have to switch the PSU off.
I THINK the graphics card is messed up but then could it be the motherboard?
What should I do about this (bought it off newegg)?
Also, I checked output using 3007wfp on several of the DVI ports, and through the S-Video out on an HDTV, both showed no video.

Pull the video card and power it on again. If you get beep codes then its probably the video card.

Did you plug in the 6 pin power plugs onto the video card?

No beep codes, I pulled the GC, peripherals, etc, can't get any noises out of it. I've tried using different cables from the PSU to power it, different PCI slots, etc.
I also have no other hardware to swap out with this to check... frustrating.

I used 2 6 pins, and I also used some adapters that came with the card to run it off those old 4 pin connectors, (I know the 4 pins were good, they got the CD drive, fans, HDD's to work..)

Your PSU will have separate cables labled PCI-Express on the power supply for powering the GPU. If you have those cables, always plug in the PCI-Express cables into the card and not the Molex-to-PCI-Express.

I did, that is what I started with, I just tried the other ones to check...

@Dozoy
Hold down enter? What will that do..?

That sounds like more of a problem with the board than the video card, imo. You should start by checking all connections, then install only one sitck of ram and see if it posts. Then try another. If you cant get it to post you may have to rma the board.

He tried both to make sure it wasn't faulty cables.

Too bad you don't have another video card, so that you can test. If you can get ahold of one, I'd try it. Try 1 RAM stick at a time and reseat the CMOS battery. You could also try clearing the CMOS.

I had a similar problem when I built my computer. It turns out that I had missed a power plug on my motherboard when I went to plug everything in. Makes sure that there's not a power plug other than the 24-pin connector somewhere on the motherboard.

Make sure your ram sticks are in the ****orange*** slots and not the black slots if you only have 3 sticks.

There is a connector above the CPU slot to its left.

Also, that is an 8 pin by the CPU, remove the black plug if you did not do that.

If the video card fans aren't spinning, and it's getting all the power it needs, then it's the card.

Thats not true. Ive had that happen after a board fails. If it wae the video card you should get an error message provided you have a speaker installed. The board isnt even posting.

Then I stand corrected. Plug in the 8 pin CPU cable in it and see if that helps it turn on.

excuse, my last most was inaccurate. Make sure your ram sticks are in the orange slots.

[Basic Troubleshooting When System Does Not Post]

If your system doesn't POST...

This is basic troubleshooting if your system has never POSTed (as in, you just put it together); Though, it may be helpful to others whose system no longer POSTs...

If you have both the 20/24 pin main ATX connector plugged in, AND the 4-Pin (or 8-pin) ATX12V P4 CPU connector plugged in, then the board should boot fine (unless it requires more power connectors from the PSU). First, try clearing the CMOS w/ the proper jumper or button.

The next thing you could do is test the PSU. Jump start it (on the main atx connector, short the green wire with any black wire, using a paperclip), and see if it stays on. If not, then its probably a faulty PSU. If it works then you can proceed with the suggestions below. ***NOTE: The paperclip trick is a simple test for those that do not have PSU testers, multimeters, nor a spare PSU to test with. It is not a 100% conclusive test of the PSU.

How to test with a multimeter @ BFG

Setup everything outside of the case, with the mobo on top of its cardboard box. Plug in only the essentials:
- PSU (namely: main 20/24-pin ATX connector and 4-pin ATX12V P4 CPU Connector; The 4-pin should work in the 8-pin EPS12v plugs, too)
- CPU w/ HSF
- Single stick of ram
- Videocard if there is no onboard video (along with its power connector, if it has one)
- System speaker/buzzer (your board may have an on-board tweeter/buzzer/speaker)
- Monitor & Keyboard

Reset/Clear the CMOS by following the instructions in your mobo manual.

* Use a screwdriver if your board doesnt have an onboard power switch. Jump the two power switch leads to turn the power on.

If it won't post, try different RAM slots. If it still won't post, pull out the ram (so no ram in the system) and listen for error beeps. If none, pull the vidcard and listen for error beeps. If none, re-seat the CPU and HSF, then try again. Report back with results if you're still having issues.

my rig recently shit the bed, and im pretty sure its the mobo because its not shutting down when i hold the power button, and id think it should do that even if any other component were bad, with the exception of maybe the psu.

If I'm not mistaken, the 4850 and the 4870 X2s need 6pin and 8 pin PCI-e power to run correctly. That may be your problem. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowI...APPHIRE Radeon HD 4850 X2 100260SR Video Card

I would take the MB out of the case.
Using the 24 and 8 pin CPU plugs, the CPU/HSF, and one stick of RAM in the first orange slot.
Plug in the GPU and place both 6 and 8 pin PCI-e power.

Before you do this clear the CMOS, with the power completely gone.

Now try and boot......if you POST you're good to go, if not it's probably the MB.

Ok, so it was the extra power connector, it was hidden behind a fan (using a lian-li case), and I feel like an idiot now.

Now I have another problem... I can't get this to boot from the CD drive? I keep getting the message "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot Decive and pres a key" even though I set the priority to the cd drive and put the disk in... what gives?

Btw... thank you all for your help, I really appreciate it. I wouldn't have ever found that power connector...

lol one problem after another. Make sure the drive is connected to the motherboard and check to make sure you don't have it disabled in the BIOS.

Good call.

CD drive is connected, I set it to the top of the boot priority... then it always takes me to a black screen and gives that message... gah this is weird... the motherboard manual has about 2 lines addressing installing an OS, saying that it is compatible with vista... (installing Vista 64bit if I didn't mention that..)

Not sure what CD Drive your installing but ensure both the sata/ide connection to the motherboard is good and you have it powered by some connection to your PSU.

It's connected... I mean, the bios recognizes it, I have some options for the drive in Bios but I left it on Auto (for all those options). It powers up, I can put in and take out disks... it just won't boot windows from it. (Windows Home Premium 64 bit, fresh out of the box)

I know my P5Q has two drive setting under the boot menu. My drive and an atapi drive which it will not boot from. You might want to check for the correct setting in the boot menu in bios, also in stead of hitting delete hit F8 at boot up that should bring up the boot menu.

Ok I did that... selected the cd drive and it went straight to that message. I've tried 2 other CD's too, an Ubuntu 32 bit live cd and a vista ultimate 32 bit disk, and it gives me the same message every time...

Just for the hell of it, put in the disc and when it says that press any key on your keyboard and see what happens.

Yeah I did, once about 10 times... lol. It does seem to get that message back up faster when I have the ubuntu CD in in contrast to the vista DVD, which seems to insinuate that it is reading the discs since it is differentiating between a dvd and a cd when it comes to time? Or perhaps that is a dumb assumption...

There may be something in the BIOS that is not recognizing your drive.

I think you said on the first page of the BIOS that it saw your CD-ROM and HDD, correct??

Make sure you have the drives in SATA/IDE or legacy mode and not ACHI or some such, for the time being.

Make sure your first boot device is the cd-rom.
Make sure your HDD is recognized in the HDD priority.
Make sure the HDD and the SATA for the CD-ROM are plugged into the same color SATA ports.

Make sure all you have plugged in is your CD-ROM and the one HDD as accessories at this point.

Try each stick of ram one by one. Ram can cause no video single with all the other parts working.

What DVD drive do you have(Exact model #) and where is it plugged in(sata or IDE).

Straight off the invoice - " DVD BURN LG|GH22NS30 22X SATA", I just grabbed a random DVD burner off Newegg... plugged in SATA on port 4 (shows up on SATA drives in BIOS)
I also hit F8, selected the drive directly off the boot menu and it didn't work then either, same thing.
@magoo - you said "Make sure all you have plugged in is your CD-ROM and the one HDD as accessories at this point." - I have two blank HDD's plugged in, taking SATA ports 1 and 2. Having two wouldn't effect anything in such a way as to cause this, would it?

Not it would not. By the looks of it, you have a dead drive. It happens from time to time, just RMA it back to newegg and get a replacement.
