Eyefinity vs 30 inch??

Good point about possible vast improvement when gaming on multi-monitors.
With AMD leading the way with a simple plug and play Eyefinity and nVidia's Surround, they will have to look at performance to continue to get people to hop onboard. :)

My 30inch still has that wow effect for me too. :p

You are still using a linear function to describe an area density which makes for a non-linear function.

Ah, there is the confusion. Neither PPI nor dot pitch are area measurements. PPI is pixels per inch, not pixels per inch^2. Likewise dot pitch is the measurement of the distance between adjacent subpixel colors. It is typically measured in mm (not mm^2). Neither are area measurements, both are linear.

/sigh

Look, I'm trying to be civil here, but your ignorance is making it hard. Yes, it is pixels per inch. However, it describes something that is inherently an area unless your monitor only has a single line of pixels, thus making it nonlinear. They are linear measurements describing an effect over an area making it a nonlinear quantity. For example, the difference in pixels between a PPI of a 30" and a 24" is 13.8%, however the difference in PPI between ia 30" and a 24" is 6.7%.

I'm done btw, please feel free to consider your self "right" and "mighty".

eyefinity
its more at the end no matter how you look at it.
i currently have 3 of your asus 25.5 and is just awesome.

30 inch is just meh. doesn't compare at all
you will never have the same experience from a single display vs panoramic.

30 inch.

The french window effect of eyefinity is the dealbreaker. It just screams unreal.

actually playing unreal is great on eyefinity :D

seriously though this is all hot air, the people who saw eyefinity on the web and took the plunge love it and i have hardly seen a review where people go back to one large screen, hell they even lower the gfx settings just because eyefinity makes more of an impact than enabling another layer of AA or HBAO etc..

the people who cant understand and complain about borders havent tried it ! or cant justify / afford the cost.

just be thankfull for the technology you have.. modern day gfx arent life like yet or proper 3d not even 100 years away from this but we accept a compromise as we enjoy games..

a 2cm bezel is only a small and instantly adjustable compromise ;)

btw pixel pitch on my 23" monitor is pretty much the same as a 30" monitor as my 3x are 2048 x 1152p the imersion is a lot better than a 30"

Do you think its better to play 25x9 on 30" LCD on window mode and have that extra FOV than eyefinity w/ bezel?

I have gone back to a 30" after using Eyefinity for a while and the single 30 experience sucked comparatively.

And -1 for the necro.

Would you mind explaining why you went back to a single 30"?

I went back to a 30" because one of my three Eyefinity monitors failed. I had no choice. So one day I was using 3x1 24" in portrait and then the next day no Eyefinity. :( Sad Panda.

Do you think its better to play 25x9 on 30" LCD on window mode and have that extra FOV than eyefinity w/ bezel?

And I think this would suck as well. Can you even do 25x9 on a 30"? Would be neat to see, but I don't think I would want to play on it for long.

question...

too all of you who say eyefinity sucks cause of bezels, haveyou guys every tried eyefinity?
i have no issue with the bezels. dont notice them when im gaming

think of it like this.
having one 30 is like only having a windshield in your car, no side windows. then someone comes around and invents side windows on a car and the majority of people out there think its awesome and a great improvment but there are still a few who refuse to buy a car with side windows because the car frame blocks the view between the windows and windshield. they say that they refuse to buy a car untill there is no frame between the windows and the windshield. in actuality though if those people tried driving in a car with side windows they would realize that the frame does not get in the way of your line of sight and is not an issue. the side windows are not your focus when you are driving but are there to check who is behind you, check for traffic when turning and merging and to be able to judge the speed of travel more accurately.

This is one of the best ways to explain this that I have heard.

^ Yes I tried eyefinity with 3 22" and I admit its a whole new experience because its new. I just think about bigger screen maybe better playing in window mode if you set the aspect ratio to 19x9 or even wider to match the fov of eyefinity.

That's a lame explanation to be honest...

My problem with eyefinity is that it's a shitty immersion for me. I'd rather have all or nothing. Having 3 monitors in landscape gives you a little bit on the sides, but you're still not very immersed in the game. You're aware you're staring at monitors and I noticed the bezels constantly. That and the extra monitors didn't add any benefit to me while playing something like Bad Company 2... I was distracted by the side monitors more than using them to help me. I'm done fine on single monitors for years and still see no reason to have multiple monitors. Unless they're big enough to really immerse you in the game.

poor panda, I know you got dells so they haven't got you a new one in yet?? WTF??

Here's another analogy for 30" to 3x24" Look at all those guys with the high end rigs using 30" and 8800GTX's from a couple years ago. Before the 200's and 4800's showed up, and games started to be too demanding for their single 8800gtx on that 30" screen, what did they do? Did they go and ditch there 30" for a 24" just so they could still max out the game? No, they turned down the sittings till framerates were acceptable again. Eyefinity users will do the same thing.

Oh yeah, I got a new replacement a long time ago. Went right back to my Eyefinity.

That still didn't make any sense... I ran a 30" with a GTX260 and I'd just play some games at 1920 x 1200, they looked fine... but Eyefinity is still not for everyone.

Problems I have with it
A.) Bezels ruin the immersion (You can keep lying to yourself if you want, but they are noticable)
B.) The extra monitors didn't add any gameplay advantage
C.) Extra monitors caused more distractions in fast FPS gameplay. I would think I'd see an infantry out of my peripherals and turn and see some piece of terrain or something. In TF2 it again didn't help at all.
D.) Immersion felt half-assed... And it could have been because I was using smallish monitors (23" 1080p IPS), I'm sure it would have been nicer if I could fit 3 x 30" ... but finding the funds for that and video-cards to push 12 megapixels would be hard.

I'd rather just turn up my FOV and have a slight fish-eye effect than deal with the rest of the crap eyefinity brings with it.

Just my opinion... like I said, it's not for everyone and I feel dumb for falling for the hype.

My point was to simply say that most people will change settings then swapping to less pixels, but even if you wanted to go less pixels most of the time you can still turn down resolution on eyefinity as well. Or worse case you can play on just a single monitor if you choose plus you'd be at the panels native res rather then running a 30" panel non-natively. Eyefinity does give you those additional options.

Having used both also, on 30" screens, I would also have to say your money would be better spent on a 30" panel rather then Eyefinity.

I love them both, don't get me wrong, but the continual cash flow and maintenance requirements of an Eyefinity system can be taxing.

You are certainly the small percentage that has tried it that has not liked it. VERY SMALL.

As far as you telling me I am lying to myself is insulting at best. So fuckoff.

A. It does not for me at all. Never see them.

B. I like it for the added immersion, people that use 3x1 landscape have an advantage in many games.

C. Yeah.....sure.

D. Yeah.....sure.

I think I would rather have a single 30" than 3x1 20", but at the 22" and bigger mark I think EF wins out.

Monitors should be the least frequently upgraded components and the prices drop fairly dramatically as you drop inches. By three biggish ones now and it will be that much longer before you feel you're running out of real estate vs. a single higher resolution one.

More frequent upgrades for a single large monitor + the price premium per screen and it probably evens out over a few years. Then you go 6X EF. :D

I'll never go back to a single display, coming from a 52" LCD. Eyefinity wins without a doubt.

Are you saying Eyefinity users should have lower insurance rates?

It is not like a car window, and no one has ever complained that their TV bezel was blocking the damn wall or any other stupid thing I have seen in these threads lately. Push the merits of EF if you want, it certainly has some, but please stop pretending that 'only some freakish .0001% of the population could not like EF and it is only because they haven't seen it! If they had they would know it is like drinking unicorn giggles and come to bask in its greatness!!' or whatever.

man you sound angry about this topic near the end. is this offensive to you, the fact that a lot of people like eyefinity? just to let you know this thread isn't about us trying to convince you or anyone else to get eyefinity. it's about the OP asking for valid opinions about which is better. therefore the only people who should be aloud to reply are those who have tried both gaming on eyefinity and a 30" screen (not saying that you have no right to respond, geared towards those who have not tried both).

having tried both, i feel that eyefinity offers a better immersion experience on FPS, MMO and driving games (3x1 landscape). on racing games you can judge distance and speed better because you have the two side screens. With MMOs, the player can see more of the battle field and less of the screen is taken up by their spells and cast buttons. On FPS, it is easy to spot people trying to sneak up on you and it is much easier to view your surroundings. RTS games suck on 3x1. i constantly have the feeling that i cant see high enough (supreme commander 2). the map feels constrained and awkward because you have to move the mouse twice as far to scroll left or right than up or down. gaming RTS on 3x2 is awesome because the ratio feels correct. whenever i play RTS games i turn off my side monitors. when i'm gaming on a 30" it feels the same as gaming on my xbox in the living room with better graphics. its not different or new. Eyefinity makes me want to pick old games back up and try them out (mirrors edge for example)

and as far as the the comment about the bezel blocking the wall? i dont get it, could you come up with something better, or something that makes sense? however, to make my illusion work with what you said (this is in reference to people complaining about the tv bezel blocking the wall or whatever), read this: Before eyefinity, was there any reason for people to complain about bezels? no because there was no easy way for people to game on 3 monitors and no reason for the bezels to get in the way. Now gaming on three monitors is plug and play (or atleast my experience has been such). now that 3 screen gaming is easily accessible, the complaint and debate topics of bezels arise. Isnt it better to have three times as much viewing room than one screen? A bigger screen offers no more viewing space. it just makes the image you were looking at on the 22" monitor larger. eyefinity actuality adds new things that you couldnt see before. also to reference a [H]ard review, kyle said he had a 10 second time increase (not positive if it was 10 seconds) when playing on eyefinity as opposed to no eyefinity. the three monitors added an advantage that previously didnt exist, which is what most hardcore gamers are after. i can still refer back to the car illustration. before when cars only had windshields (hypothetically speaking, of course) why would people complain about the frame of the car? They knew nothing else. However, once side windows were added, critics came out of the wood work to talk down about the change and how the frame of the car is a safety issue because it takes away some of your viewing angle? but isn't it better to have the addition of the two side windows than none at all?

how is eyefinity not like a car window? lets hear an intelligent comment how the illusion is ineffective and completely does not represent the current situation? please refrain from using expletives as they are commonly associated with lack of thought, hate speech, and don't aid to an argument.

if someone made a drink called unicorn giggles, i would buy it. that would be awesome.

No I said what annoyed me. It was people being totally dismissive of another point of view. Did you even read my post?

is it that the new nvidia cards are a failure and have nothing new to offer other than tessellation

Um what are you even talking about? Again... Did you actually read my post?

I have tried 3x 24 (I believe, is not my setup, but I can find out if you really want to know) and my own 1 24. I think I can imagine a larger screen size, however I didn't make it a point to really push for either.

as far as the the comment about the bezel blocking the wall? i dont get it, could you come up with something better, or something that makes sense?

It wasn't anything I came up with, it was a remark about some of the silly things I see about bezels not mattering. Here is one from a previous EF thread (sorry to single you out RevMen! It was just the first one I found.)
I really don't understand how the bezels can bother people that much. A single monitor still has bezels, there's just nothing on the other side of them.
My point was no one was disturbed by the bezels blocking the... wall or whatever.

how is eyefinity not like a car window? lets hear an intelligent comment how the illusion is ineffective and completely does not represent the current situation? Can you come up with something better or are you too busy bashing new technology because its below you.

EF is all about using 3 monitors to game. I spend money to make my games look pretty when I play them. Car windows are viewports needed to operate a car. You use them to see. I don't look for visual immersion when I look out the window of my car. I look to see out of it. They aren't there to be a pretty viewpoint into a game. I, personally, do not view EF as a real improvement at this time. I don't like the bezels and I don't like the idea of either lowered settings or an acceleration of my upgrade cycle. I would vastly prefer, plan to buy, and would recommend a larger monitor instead. As I mentioned that is an opinion. You can not like that opinion, but it doesn't make it not real. Either way none of this has anything in common with a window in a vehicle used to operate it in a way that you don't smash into other people...

If you think I am 'bashing new technology' then you clearly did not read my post. Might want to view it again.

please refrain from using expletives as they are commonly associated with lack of thought, hate speech, and don't aid to an argument.

You seriously thought my post contained hate speech? Where?

if you someone made a drink called unicorn giggles, i would buy it. that would be awesome.

We go to market in 6 months. Shortly after we plan to introduce Unicorn Giggles Glow. The Unicorn Giggles with Glow.

I, personally, do not view EF as a real improvement at this time. I don't like the bezels...
I really don't understand how you could think that. The center monitor always shows exactly the same thing you would see on a single-monitor system, so you aren't losing anything.

That's what we're all struggling with here. You're complaining about getting more of everything (width, resolution, field of vision). The middle monitor is exactly the same as a single monitor, there's a bezel as usual, but then you complain because there's more field of vision beyond that instead of nothing-ness.

It would be like me wearing horse blinders because the frames of my glasses interrupt my view slightly. Completely nonsensical. Triple-monitor in no way diminishes what I saw before with a single screen, and only adds to it. I can't comprehend what's bad about that.

...and I don't like the idea of either lowered settings or an acceleration of my upgrade cycle. I would vastly prefer, plan to buy, and would recommend a larger monitor instead.
Why would Eyefinity force you to lower your settings? 5040x1050 is almost exactly the same number of pixels as 2560x1600, which makes performance very close between 5040x1050 eyefinity and 2560x1600 single-monitor. You shouldn't have to lower any settings since the overall resolution stays about the same.

thats not im my post anymore btw. i took it out about 2 minutes after i posted my initial post and re read yours. and i wasn't saying you were using hate speech. its just something expletives are usually associated with.
also another point brief point is that i havent heard any eyefinity people bash 30" screen gaming (or if there are any i havent seen them yet) because its still cool and no inefficient. i think what all the EF people are trying
to do is explain to everyone that EF adds more to what you see and is a definate advantage in gaming. people think im hacking in TF2 because i turn so fast and to kill them when they were behind me. i just lol and say
eyefinity sucka.

Car windows are not needed to drive a car. they make driving safer. EF adds view ports to my gaming experience. I use them to see. i dont look for visual immersion when i look in my EF monitors, it just happens (just as the side windows help you judge speed and distance better, as well as being able to see who is next to you; all of these being the noted advantages i have seen by using eyefinity in my previous post). i look to see more of the gaming field. they aren't there to be a pretty view port into a game, but are there for peripheral vision. i personally do view EF as a real improvement at this time. I dont like bezels either but i dont notice them and i dont like the idea of either lowered settings or an acceleration of my upgrade cycle. I would vastly prefer , plan to buy, and would recommend Eyefinity instead of a larger monitor. That is an opinion. You can not like that opinion, but it doesn't make it not real. When im playing a game and can see the entire horizon as the sun is rising, i defiantly say that is much prettier than one monitor.

(this is not meant to mock you but prove a point)

and i agree unknown-One. thats another good way of putting it. you are only gaining more by playing with eyefinity. there is no loss of image.

and to the OP, based on the fact that i can run every game i have on high with eyefinity, i think i will be fine in a year or two, and still be able to play the games with decent settings.

The trouble with the 30" monitor is that it's the worst value proposition in displays or computer parts in general. A 30" display costs as much as it did two or three years ago; that is just terrible value for tech, which usually depreciates faster than any other commodity.

That doesn't change the reality that it is inherently awesome to have, or that it can produce a commandingly high resolution, but seen in context, it is simply a bad bargain.

Don't even get me started on 27", which is even worse all around.

LOL Well unless you bought a 30" two or three years ago, in which case it was a really good value. I'd happy with my 30", sooner or later 20+30+20 will be doable and I'll go for that. Plus even then it'll be mostly gimicy for me because I don't really plan on playing any games that'll use it. Starcraft2 isn't going to make sense with it, and thats the only game I really care about at the moment on PC. Plus 30" will wins for watching movies, photoshop, and for work.

go 3x30" End of discussion.

I thought about that but you won't be doing this well in newer games for some time, even with 3 or even 4 GPUs. For nVidia Surround users theere also the issue of 3D, no 120Hz 30" monitors yet. So it really is a question of game features vs. monitor size and picture quality. Right now you simply can't have it all. I decided to got for features so I went with the Alienware OptX AW2310s because it give me all the gaming tech there is though the panels are only 23" (with 3 them not so only really) and TN, which is the part that bugs me the most. Good 23" IPS panels are cheaper than the OptX.

I fell to the hype and bought 3 23" Dell 1080p for my eyefinity setup. While it was great at first, the wow factor wore off pretty quick. The only game I play that actually justifies this setup is Flight Simulator X. I'm trying to sell the monitors to help me cover the cost of a 30" Dell 3007.
I don't necessarily regret trying out Eyefinity, because I am now totally convinced that a single 30" is the way to go.
My 2 cents....

I've been using Eyefinty since Catalyst 9.12 hotfix and I can't see myself going back to 1 screen.

And since 10.7a Quadfire also works better, playing Crysis Warhead, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games World of Warcraft with the extra view is just great! :D

if you plan to do any gaming at 7680x1600 I wouldn't unless you have at least 1x 5970 4GB card. :D

If you can afford 3x 30" panels you can probably afford to run just about any video card setup you want. Well at least in regard to consumer/gaming cards.

I'm not reading the whole thread, I'll just jump in with a few facts and a few thoughts.

Your primary concern should be the equipment needed to drive these resolutions. 2560x1600 is a very large resolution to power, I've had my 30" for a long time now and I've used some pretty high end configurations to power it, and it still struggles in some games at maximum settings.

I've got a 5970 which is overclocked to 850/1200 which makes it essentially 2x 5870s in crossfire, I still struggle to run some games in max settings, before that I had 2 4870s in crossfire, before that I had the 8800GTX, I've had to spend a lot of money to keep games looking good at this resolution.

Now 2560x1600 is 4Mpix (about 4 million pixels) if you're going for 3x22" or 3x24" you're talking 5Mpix or 7Mpix respectively. These are really massive resolutions, and there is no magical trick here which makes them easier to run, you need almost twice as much GPU power to run a 3x24" (5760x1200) setup compared to a 30", and with modern games even high end video card solutions can struggle to power 30"

We've currently got it a bit easy because we're still in the slump of having multiplatform games dominate the market which are not in the slighest bit demanding in their graphics, so eyefinity is viable for some current titles. But we're seeing a few games break away from that trend and actually deliver new DX11 content, and as always the PC platform keeps in the lead providing new graphics and higher fidelity.

Put simply, I throw a fair bit of cash at my rig and 2560x1600 is more or less playable for the most part, but it's the maintenance of having to basically go high end pretty much every generation to maintain that playability with newer games that's the killer. Having to do that for a 5-7Mpix display is really just begging you to blow thousands on graphics cards every 18 months.

My personal opinion on the matter is that eyefinity isn't worth it, if you want to run with maximum settings on new games then you'll need to look at buying 2 maybe 3 top end graphics cards more or less each new graphics cycle. This is a big turn of especially when coupled with the fact that the flanking monitors mainly sit in your peripheral vision, you see way less fine detail there anyway so it's not as if you're spending 3x more and see 3x more detail, it's not an especially ellogant solution IMO.

You currently have a 5870, and you're currently running 1920x1200 which is about 2Mpix, so going up to 2560x1600 (4Mpix) so you can expect approximately half the frame rate you're getting now meaning you'd have to drop a bunch of settings in some games to maintain playable frame rates.

Adding 2 more 1920x1200 monitors will give you 1/3 frame rate and probably verge on unplayable for some modern games.
