Eyefinity Configuration Suggestions

long time lurker, first time poster.

I plan on getting a Dell 30" here in the next couple of days and have two mixed brand 21" monitors. The resolutions will be the right size but the monitors won't line up perfectly and for now that will be ok. I plan on doing portrait-landscape-portrait. My question is I know eyefinity doesn't work for this resolution without some other little fixes and software and I'm ok with that, I don't want tri-screen gaming (just want web browser in one, vent in the other, temp monitoring, etc) but will my one card (6970) push all three monitors in different resolutions like that? I'm 90% sure the answer is yes but I just wanted to be 100% sure.

Yes, it definitely will. Provided you get a 3008 or 3011 and use the displayport connection, any modern AMD card will drive all three monitors for desktop use. A 6970 is theoretically overkill, a 6870 should be fine, though overkill rarely hurts.

finally decided on the U2311 x 3 and Dell epp gave me the best deal ever....$239 a piece shipped.

Best choice :D

Hey guys, quick question.

3xU2311 or U2711.
And down the road, like a few months for now will it be possible to add two 20' monitors in portrait if i go the U2711 route? (Don't consider this when answering my first question tho).

hi does anyone have a hanns 28inch triple monitor eyefinity setup . please pm or let me know as im a noob to this and i will more or less copy your setup depending on which hanns and vga/dvi/DP ports you have...
i need the eyefinity as im assuming it works with ultramon,,,,would be better for compiz fusion in linux and just sounds pretty cool compared to nvidea...and i saw a guy on youtube say its better than nvidea for people who work as oposed to play,,,,,are the any other alternatives though to running three monitors....and subsequently gaming on them,,,,,,,,or is ultramon even possible in triple eyefinity......please help i need to build my pc asap order parts etc.....find a motherboard etc with pci-e etc so i can get tv and lots of things,,,,,please mentor me :D i currently have one hanns g HH281 with only vga port....any suggestions on how to progress in terms of building a pc capable of running lots of adobe programs whih is equivalent to photoshop and all that and powerful maths programming and data modelling programs,,so basically one two or three high end GPUs...i need to focus on the display port if and should i need one and the GPU/GPUs i will need and power supply i think as to what wattage i will need. :D nd thanks ihope to have my triple monitor setup soon.

Ultramon has been slow to update for years imo... Display Fusion or Actual Multiple Monitors >>> Ultramon. I've used DF in the past and I like it, I haven't finished my EF setup so I dunno how well any of those apps work when you're in spanned desktop mode... But they should work fine if you switch out to a regular independent display mode (which is easier/quicker to do w/ATI cards). Your post is a bit of a run-on sentence (is your caps key broken?), no offense, sorry if I missed some of those questions.

Guys do you know other alternative to an active mini display port to dual link DVI adapter solution besides the Apple one? I'm gonna run 3x30" monitor using HD6970 CF.

Thanks elvn, I completely forgot about monoprice, look like I'll be getting that one then, guess it doesn't make any difference compare to the one at Amazon.

No problem :)

I don't own either of those so just be sure to check some reviews to make sure they are good for your setup. My only 2560x1440 screen currently is minidp out from gpu to minidp in on the monitor.. the other two are 1440x900 so are using the minidp to single link dvi adapters.

3X30'' LCD with a Quad-Fire 6990+6970+6970 set-up. 7680x1600. No problems. Even in portrait mode. I have to send back one of the ZR30w since there is 2 stuck red pixels. So I will post more pictures in portrait mode when getting the replacement.

A notorious poster in here was posting everywhere (on 10 diffferent enthusiasts forums and sub-forums) that the AMD Crossfire bridge didn't had enough bandwidth to support 3X30'' LCDs with an AMD Quad-Fire set-up, and that every game was crashing. He was wrong.

It's sad, because I see alot of people referencing him about this, when he was obviously wrong. I hope the thruth will spread now everywhere. 3X30'' + 4 GPUs is working fine on AMD side also. :)

So now true hard facts for everyone to know. It's working perfectly fine. :)

Just Cause 2 and Metro 2033 at 7680X1600. Working fine. No ''bandwidth problem''. :)

AVP. That picture is not good because it's a really dark scene, and didn't set-up my tripod. So it was a ''handheld twilight'' shot.

I have a question: Can I use 2 mini DisplayPort on the HD6970 along with the dual link DVI to do 3x30" Eyefinity? The thing is there's only one dual link DVI and one single link DVI so I can't use the 2nd DVI port to support up to 2560x1600 so I'm wondering if I use 2 mini DisplayPort it will work?

Yes, that should work fine. If you're gaming, that's a lot of pixels to push, but it should work well for normal desktop usage.

You'll need at least dual cards in Crossfire to push 3x30" monitors in games with decent quality settings. Take it from me, I know. :)

Thank guys, I just wanna make sure before I get the 2nd mini DisplayPort to dual link DVI adapter.
@Dan_D: Yeh I know, I just built a new rig 2 days ago with 2600K and HD6970 CF since I believe the 2GB RAM will come in handy at 7680x1600. Just didn't realize that unlike the GTX 580, the 6970 only has one dual link DVI so I would need 2 adapters to set up such thing.

The 6970 isn't powerful enough to handle many newer games at that resolution despite having the RAM for it.

There isn't a solution to max out all games at that resolution, at least in my case when I can only use 2 cards so I think my best bet would be HD6970 CF for now then wait for the next gen cards. Heck I can even get a 6990 when the price drops to do Tri Fi and I believe it will give me the best bang for the buck. I just wanna try out Eyefinity and play some games at decent settings, rather than that I'll just stick with gaming on a single 30" when I wanna max out everything.

Well i get very playable frame rate in BC2 running a single 5870 E6 2GB card on my 3 x 30s with an e8400 @ 3.6 GHz. I haven't really tried anything newer on my system though.

Level of detail: High
Textures: High
Shadows: Low
Effects: Low to High (Depends on the server)
AA: 2x
AF: 16x
HBAO: Off

I can max out most games save for AvP, Metro 2033, Crysis 1, and Battlefield Bad Company 2. BFBC2 I can max the game out at 5760x1200, but not 7680x1600. At the latter resolution I have to do some tuning to get it to run OK. Its playable maxed out, but far from ideal.

Is the crt somehow displaying 1920x1080? Cause otherwise, that ain't eyefinity.

Doesn't matter. Workstation Eyefinity and Gaming Eyefinity are both subsets of Eyefinity in general, which AMD simply describes as three displays hooked into one GPU.

It's a cool monitor setup, but it's a typical multimonitor setup, not eyefinity. I run three monitors off a single AMD card, but am not running eyefinity -- which entails treating independent monitors as a unified, single display.

Eyefinity requires the same resolution and refresh rate on all three monitors. That requirementt, along with the need for displayport, trips up some people looking to adopt the technology.

got some new ergotron lx deskmount arms....wish i got these a long time ago.

Very nice arms. Clears up so much desk space when you get rid of the monitor stands.

yea i also had to ditch the hutch. but now i have room on my desk for the speakers so my sound is better, the screens are up higher so eyefinity looks much better (eyes mid screens) and not so cramped on the desktop. i do have to say that its a SOB trying to get the monitors aligned properly, i think i still have a slight down angle slope but it works for me so its staying that way. 4.5 hrs of reworking and mounting is enough for me. the plan was to mount a 4th up top but now im not so sure as the triple set is already up higher....anyone else have a 4th up high and actually use it?

Can anyone take some basic measurements of their tri setup?

Since the monitors are angled in a little, I am curious as to how much space each setup is taking in terms of both overall width and when people don't use a single stand, how much space is required just to hold all 3 monitor stands?

Thanks,

A lot in my case. I need almost the full Ikea Galant desk with most of the options to hold just the monitors, keyboard and mouse.

I have a nice crank adjustable bi-level desk but it's only 48" wide. I am wondering if I will be able to fit 3 Alienware AW2310s on the top without the stands hanging over the edge - the screens will hangover, but I am hoping the stands will not.
