Eyefinity and Samsung

Haha, nicely done... I'm pretty excited about the prospect of the 5xxx series and I don't even own the proper displays for it right now (unless they somehow enabled you to use different res displays for the side displays). If the cards give me a good enough jump in performance from the GTX260 I'll be getting one at the end of the year tho, and adding two one or two more 24" displays (I really don't wanna downsize my main screen to 22" tho, so we'll see...).

My guess is Samsung and anyone else w/thinner bezels are gonna charge more of a premium for it than it's really worth tho. If there's still a bezel it's still gonna bother the anal retentive types out there regardless of how thin it is. For the rest of us the value's gonna be on existing models.

So let me get this straight, you find this:

More immersive than this? (I humored you and added bezels).

Heh I think I'll stick with my 30" non TN LCD. The problem with life is that you get what you pay for. So you may have a really high res "triple screen" but you get lighting artifacts, backlight leakage and poor contrast. I'm not sure it's really worth it. That's just me but $200 screens arn't going to cut the butter.

You do realize you could buy three $400 screens and still come out about even with the price of a single 30" display, right? It's more than possible to get good 22" and 24" displays for $400.

There's at 'least one 22" E-IPS screen (that sells for $200-250), I forget the model number (Dell)... Long thread about it on the boards. And there's plenty of non-TN 24" displays obviously, two of 'em would probably still be cheaper than your 30", three would probably be about the same, depends on the specific models... Even if it was slightly costlier, three 24" screens would beat the heck out of a single 30" screen any day of the week imo. /shrug

Moreover, I've used both types of display and I can see the value of IPS displays for professional content creation work and such, but frankly, I can't really say I'd notice the difference in games unless I was really looking for it. Backlight leakage is pretty minimal in a decent TN panel (not noticeable unless you have a screen that's complete and uniform black) and I'm not sure what lighting artifacts you're talking about...

Obviously you wouldn't wanna go and use flipped TN panels in a vertical orientation for Eyefinity or a similar application; that would be horrible, horizontal viewing angles are typically acceptable but vertical tend to be mediocre and vertical would become horizontal if you flip the displays, but outside of that I don't see the issue. Regardless, you've got options.

I think 3 displays would be the sweet spot. Just had a look at Dell and trying to imagine two 30s flanking my current one. :)

Can I just buy cheap 22inch right now with huge bezel and just rip out the screen and mount on the wall or some kind of enclosure? that will eliminate the bar between monitors. Also that will eliminate buying expensive thin bezel monitors they will release soon.

you'll find when you take it out of the plastic case, there is a metal bracket around the panel itself, and then inside that you'll find that it was those metal ends actually holding the works together...

already had that idea, tore apart a broken monitor i had collecting bunnies

to the above pieced together goodness, that's great, it is... all wide and sexy and immersive yes

you have 3 22" screens... so your main action is happening right in front of you yes?

my mail screen is the same resolution as yours... only its 37"

almost twice the size of your single center display - not better or worse... just bigger, which at the time to me was what i wanted... and currently still is

or i can flip the script and use my 1080p projector at around 100" - again, not better, just bigger, and high enough resolution to keep me grinning

------------------

and why? why for heavens sake are you guys pretending that im right and you're wrong or you're wrong and im right [see what i did there?]

i never farking said i wasnt interested about this technology! in fact, i said... and i'll quote

but that thin in the middle is the kinda thin im talking about for me to want to buy 3 and line them up

hell if they are that thin all around im pulling the trigger on 6 and ill sli some of the newer cards

see that part there about buying 6 and the corresponding gpu hardware?

my whole focus and attention is that for this type of investment, which from scratch you're taking about close to $1500+

read my lips people - its pointless trying to convince me how great eyefinity is going to be

i already know, ive ran 10 different setups in the past 5 years, some of them were indeed multimonitor

i want it to be as sexy as it could be... not just a tiny bit sexier than it already is

If desktop monitors are anything like laptop screens the actual metal brackets (one on the left, one on the right) are way thinner than the actual bezels are. Recently replaced a broken screen in a laptop and the metal brackets are about as thick as an ordinary coin.

you may be very correct - the monitor i tore apart was an older lcd from back in the back

i had that same idea back when this post first came up but didnt say anything because who wants to pull apart brand new hardware voiding warranty's and such

It came to my mind earlier too. If I thought of it, and you thought of it, I'm guessing it's going to be the kind of thing a lot of other people will too. Probably won't be too long after release until we see pictures of somebody's stripped 24 monitor setup being plastered all over the various hardware forums. All the actual hardware is generally on the back of the screen, so it would look quite ugly from behind, but then again what multimonitor setup does look good from behind?

i did go looking at raw panels on ebay and around the net / the metal bezel was thinner ... by how much i couldnt tell in pictures

once the 58xx's are in the wild im sure people will do all sorts and types of things to minimize the area between displays and maximize immersion

hey! did alienware ever come out with that huge wrap monitor thingamabob?

think about one of those in the middle and two normal monitors on either side...

talk about field of view!?

Depends on the game; in the case of Need for Speed, you've got all kinds of action on the side screens. You can watch out for cars in your three rear-view mirrors and out of your side windows (you simply can't see that much on a single monitor). Left4Dead is another good example, where all three screens can end up filled with zombies as the horde attacks.

There really is a tangible advantage and increase in immersion, I find a lot of games now feel claustrophobic without the side screens. Even on a 100" projector, I miss the additional field of view offered by triple-monitor.

I really don't see how a bigger screen makes it more immersive. Your aspect ratio isn't any wider, meaning you have nothing to either side of your main screen besides blackness, and you aren't seeing any more of your games than you did on a 22" screen of the same aspect ratio. I find having a slight black bar between displays is better than having no side displays at all

to each his or her own - you like it one way, she likes it a second way, and he likes it a third...

none of us is wrong, all of us are right...

you want 3 22" displays and i prefer my single 37"

you have a wider fov and i have more uninterrupted real estate - how is one better than the other?

you really dont see how a bigger screen... etc etc - ok, i didnt ask you to

man! stop replying like im trying to convert anyone... im not, im not trying to get you to see my point of view either...

my whole original idea was that if samsung is going to apply time and attention to this, they should do it right and try to truly minimize the space between displays to heighten immersion

i didnt say its a bad idea, i didnt say damn all those who this that or the other

calm down, have some dip [late great george carlin, rip]

all im saying is if you're going to do it... do it right... dont just pull displays off the shelf and squeeze them into smaller cases and call it good

actually design and implement lcd panels with the most minimum of bezel surrounds

i dont think anyone here can argue that thinner bezels would be a bad thing?

that's all im saying people... really...

Thinner bezels is always a good thing! :)

Lets hope that common market dynamics work here:

Demand -> supply

There will be a larger userbase that will look for the thinnest bezels, so I hope that means manufacturers wants the customers to choose their display and compete.

I never understood this whole multimonitor setup for gaming, having all those screen togethers would drive me crazy because of the bazel between each screen, having those black lines is really annoying.

Its like gaming on a single screen. You still have the same single screen (your main screen in center), but you get added content on the sides for immersion. The gaming itself is concentrated on the main screen in center. The rest just surrounds you (pun intended).

I know you get more, but the bazels are just too distracting at least for me, I would hope they can make monitors with very thin bazels.

I hope they will too. :) Did you try triplehead gaming though? People tend to forget about the bezels very often after gaming with it because of the added immersion makes the gameplay more intense.

Since myself and I think a lot of other people would love to go to 3 monitors and have no plans whatsoever to go to 6, I would love to see somebody make a monitor with 3 panels side by side inside a single bezel. Of course this has to become popular enough before there's any chance of seeing that but who knows.

Its made already, but it costs an arm and a leg:

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/alienware-curved-display-rocks-crysis-at-2880-x-900/

After seeing the pics I had the same opinion of multi monitors, but then seeing videos of it in action I was surprised how little it affects the experience. It's kind of like driving in a car, very few have a wrap around windshield, most have the roof support pillars on the ends, and I think that driving without side windows would be a pain. If I ever go this route, I foresee tilting the side monitors in somewhat, to try to equalize the distance from the panels to my eyes so they don't need to re-focus at the constantly changing distance

i already asked about those boys! dang on it people pay attention :)

The resolutions are too low on that thing to be useful.

10 Lunens at 848 x 480 for an 8 foot tall height of screen isn't gonna cut it. The projector needs 2000+ Lumens not 10. Also need at the very least 1024x768 resolution -- frankly I'd prefer 1280x1024 native or better. The second or third generation of that might be very promising though as laser isn't going to need lens throw.

He means 3 full resolution LCD screens, just crammed side by side inside one bezel. You'd still have a small gap between the screens though - just look up what the LCD screens actually look like inside the monitors. They have a small interior frame that goes around the screen itself.

That link is to a projector one, and it doesn't accept 3 inputs either so the resolution is far lower than Eyefinity. That product doesn't actually make any sense to me. If you want resolution why wouldn't you go for a 30" LCD over that curved one? If you want size why not go for a big old 50" TV at 1920x1080. That NEC costs about $8k - I don't really see many (if any) of us on this thread buying it.

I feel the choices of display are poor who wants the focus of their gaming to be a bezel. If this is adaptive enough it would be better for them to put 5 Dell 30" monitors in landscape and use them side by side in a large line. Also I think if this gets popular we could see some new monitor sizes like Ultra wide screen which is double or triple 1080p on a single panel i cant think of any good reason they cannot do this.

darn! i was all excited about the eyefinity section of the review today, only to hear they'll get to it later this week...

eh well... back to waiting

pcper.com 's review focused BIG TIME on Eyefinity if you're wanting to see it in action now. They pretty much tried an Eyefinity setup on each game they benchmarked:

http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=783&type=expert&pid=6 is the first page with eyefinity videos, but there are more on each game's page.

He ran into the same problem I'd read about on Anandtech too though - many games aren't seeing the right aspect ratio and that leads to the picture getting 'stretched' on the side panels. It's a game specific issue, because I read WoW runs perfectly for instance.
