remmy my setting on my lappy are different than your setting.

28 VS 60 processess running is big difference, if you running like anti-vuris, etc..while play game that is problem cuz games dont like interface others apps running same time cause slow down.

just test HL2 again, FPS show 35 to 130 in most areas, average 60 fps while moving around, stand still do nothing around 43

If you tweaks some more with your lappy and HL2 anyhow.

Everyone users settings are different sorry :(

Ravynmagi do you have any pics of the bare keyboard when you disassembled your machine??? If so could you post them.
 
Guys, I have noticed Windows Update is now providing Atheros driver version 7.2.0.204... I usually stay away from WU drivers (especially video), however, this is newer than even the one on Atheros' website (7.2.0.199). I have been running it for a few days and it is great. Originally I thought the Atheros cards were junk (since it took like 6 drivers to get it working)... I had to use at least 7.2.0.125 just to use the laptop, but everything after that seems fine. I would suggest that ANYONE having ANY type of problems with wireless, try the driver from Windows Update. On a side note, the antenna in this thing picks up farther than any other laptop I have ever used (with the newer drivers).

I just realized when I purchased this from officemax they had the Maxassurance 3 year program for $130...which is obviously a price mistake. Now lookin on my receipt it says DESKTOP 3 year....do you think they will still honor it on a laptop?

I wouldn't count on it...if something happens you'll probably have to go back to Office Max and put up a fight that they screwed up etc etc. The 3 year warranty with accident\wear and tear coverage is $199, so for the extra $70 it might be worth all the hassle...
 
Has anyone tried this Crucial RAM in the laptop yet? I was wondering about the size, not the specs....if it fits without a problem, I'll be switching my RAM around next week :cool:

There was talk before about the IR port being a dummy. Anyone confirm this? Doesn't seem to work if it isn't one. Support emailed me and said it should be included...Will call and have fun with that later ... Thanks for the info.

I should mention that the 3 year max assurance warranty I got was online, so theres no way it was my mistake at all. It was the ONLY option available, I just thought it was a great deal, but now looking more into it, looks like it was a mistake. Wonder if I should call them, and see if they'll want me to pay them more..
 
Meh, I did the full uninstall/reinstall procedure for the 100.30 drivers and performance increased a bit but not by much. I'll definitely be going to XP when I go home for the summer and will go back to Vista maybe when there are official NVidia drivers.

I tried to use the 165.01 drivers at Tweaksrus.com but couldn't get them to install. Using their .inf file didn't work... Vista gave me an error when I tried to install it.
 
questions folks has anyone ordered from Provantage www.provantage.com They appear to have the best price on the TL 60 and I'm becoming real tempted to purchase one.

I ordered 2x 2gb sticks of Crucial SODIMMs for $295 shipped. ~ $150 for a 2gb chip is a pretty good deal, but I didn't want to post until I knew if they worked.

They are scheduled to arrive, later today.

I was eyeballing that last night. I have 4gb of ram on the way and a 7200 rpm drive ... the cpu is all that is left.

I am wondering when and how much the TL-64 (2.2 Ghz) is going to go for ... it is also supposed to be a 35 watt chip, which should allow it to drop right in.
 
Adding a higher performance processor will incrase heat in the Notebook. Each time I have upgraded processors in my desktops, I have always added a new fan. I do not know where one could do this on the XT5000T.

I have already added a second hard disk (160GB) to the system as well as another 1GB of ram. The frame of the notebook gets quite hot now with mere moments of intensive activity. I would think that adding a TL64 would bring even more heat to the system.

One solution other than a fan installed on the motherboard or notebook frame would be to use a cooler such as the Coolmaster R9-NBC-AWAK NotePal w1 underneath the XT.

I am interested in what suggestions others may have on this matter.
 
Someone in this thread mentioned the Zepto. Any more details in regards to that? $1200 for a DX10 Notebook sounds mighty appealing.

I just ran 3DMark05 and got 3300 3DMarks, which seems to be right on target with what I should be getting on this setup. Yet, Half-Life 2 still runs like utter crap regardless of settings. I'm so confused.....

No clue I'm running it on what it auto detected (don't have it with me so I can't say) but its getting in the ~40fps range most of the time and only occasionally dropping to ~25 when it gets super busy

Just upgraded my driver from the Windows Update and stability of my wireless connection improved considerably, I am also getting two more bars than usual on the signal meter. Very good find AA !

Why the price difference? Looks like the same product. Link 1 was clicked from froogle. Looks like google charges 1.6% of price?

I worry about this, because the web site lists them (possible error) as 128 x 8 which is 1gb stick. The spec sheet for the part number (T667SB2G_M) on the supertalent web site correctly lists it as 256 x 8 which is 2gb.

So, if you order from ewiz, would you receive the part number (which is a 2gb stick) or a part that matches the 128 x 8 spec, which is 1gb. Call me crazy, but I didn't want to mess with the confusion, so I ordered the Crucial part number.
 
has anyone even applied some ArticSilver5 onto the cpu. that should at least bring down the temp by 10c
 
If you scroll up a bit (400 or so up) you'll see it was tried and failed (artic silver), the CPU uses some type of pad between the heat sink and the processor, you need the thickness of the pad to transfer heat and AS would not be thick enough.

The crucial ram arrived, went right in and works great. Although, I think that there is some architectural windows 32-bit reason that the OS (system -> properties) only shows 3.00 GB of ram.

Under Mainboard -> Memory, SiSoft shows 3gb ddr2-sdram
Under Chipset 1, SiSoft shows 4gb of ddr2 memory running at 2x 320 Mhz for 640 data rate

A 32 bit windows should be able to address 4gb of ram and 64 bit should be able address up to 4gb x 4gb=(4gb)^2 of RAM.

2^32=4GB.

I think this is right.

It's hard to say what is going on here; but I am not alone. A fellow over in the everex support forum for this laptop has 2 x 2gb chips (different mfg) and it shows up as 3gb for him, too ... at least that is the way I am reading his thread.
 
I was told that there is a 3gb limit on the Windows 32bit os. While 4gb can technically be addressed the extra 1gb is (at best) allocated to windows resources outside of the control of the user - like pci bus and video. So in essence 3gb is the useful limit of ram in those 32bit os's Anything more is pretty much wasted.
 
I more detailed response:

The highest integer you can have in a 32-bit register is 4,294,967,295. That's why if you load up a 32-bit machine with 4GB of RAM it won't all get used. Peripherals all use some of those memory addresses. They get "mapped" into the address space. Some of them, like graphics cards, can take up a big chunk of that range.

This is simplified, of course, and there are some hardware tricks that can be done if the motherboard supports them, but generally, with 4 GB of RAM you will find most people reporting that Windows only "sees" 3.5 or so. It's precisely because the most memory you can address using 32 bits is 4,294,967,296 bytes, i.e. 4 GB.

A 64-bit processor can address 2^64 bytes of RAM. You would need billions of 1 GB RAM sticks to use all that space Most software isn't written to take advantage of 64-bits yet. Thus, the greatest real-world advantage that you get right now with 64-bit hardware is the ability to use more than 4 GB of RAM.
 
yea 4GB useless, better stick with fast 2x1GB ram and buy 2GB usb stick readyboost will do the tricks. ;)

I haven't had an opportunity to question this approach, until now.

Aren't the access times of most USB devices much, much slower than the average 5400 rpm hard disk?

If this is the case, wouldn't using USB as a supplement make the machine slower than simply increasing the swap file?
