Since I've got a lot of people asking me how I did the two window etches for my Vash Mod project I will do a How-To guide on etching images into acrylic.

Now what I need is for all you guys here at [H] to post pics of something that is...8x8" - 10x10" at most for me to etch. Preferably something like a cartoon/anime since those are easier than regular 3d photos/images.

The reason is so that I can actually take pictures while I'm going along and it will be easier to follow than just writing only text.

I will either make a new thread, add a poll and what picture gets the most votes will win. Or just make a poll in this thread. Then I will post my guide in a new topic as refrence for everyone.

I'll start writing the guide when I can and an image has been chosen.

Not sure of the complexity of the logo/cartoon that you want for this example project but how 'bout the Transformers logo? Simple lines but it'd look sleek on a window imo... I've wanted to do something like this for a while. Here's a sample of it:

The etches some of the people here have done are just sick. I've screwed around with some etching before, but it all ends up crap. I'm really anxious to see this how-to.
 
how about the basics, like bits and medium. i tried the dermel engraving bits on glass and they sucked ass.
 
Usually those etching bits are for plastics and soft metal among other things. I'd think that taking one of those to regular glass could just break the glass or the bit would slide everywhere. :confused:
 
Jess u rawk!! Etching takes some serious patience--and skill. I think I am going to have to try my hand at some...u got me all motivated!!

Might start on a full tower Aopen HX08 I got in my closet...got some great ideas from these forums.... :D

edit: ok that was kinda off subject. Pic I would like is any of the characters from UT2004...my personal favorite.
 
Those are some of the most spectacular mod work I've seen, especially given that Vash is my favorite character of all time :). Seriously, you could make some mad money doing custom jobs on ebay or other places.
 
I'm thinking about doing a window with the outline of Aku from Samurai Jack. Maybe in the future I could do an etching of Jack for a top window or something. That Trigun mod is looking nice, cant wait for the etching how-to :)

Damn that's sweet, can't wait for this How-To... I'd love doing something like that on mine. Looks so much better than the etching-like stickers I've seen.
 
so is there an etching guide out there right now? or is there an ETA on one? i'm really wanting to etch a window or 3 but dont really know the proper tools to use (yes i know a dremel but what bits and whatnot)
 
I'll be writing an etching guide soon when everyone votes on a pic. Guess I should hold the Poll tonight?

Ja, home depot has plexi of various sizes, thicknesses, and qualities.

I got a vote for Stewie also since I would like to read up on any tips on how to shade large areas without mucking it all up.

I have a pic of him in my calender that would work so well. It's him with a wrench/toolbox looking back and saying "What do you know about the MACHINE!?!". Hehe.
 
I know nothing on etching, but how would spray paint work on computer cases?
I'm planning on building my next computer (whenever this one breaks down), and I want to see if I can do some Graffiti on it, but I'm not too sure how the spray paint will look on the case...
Do you think it'll work?

Hmm well um I've spray painted an entire case but haven't worked with graffiti art. I suppose that it would work, as long as you use something like Duplicolor. Krylon isn't too good nor is plasticote for some reason they don't like to adhere very well. Um you may want to scuff the surface with a scuff pad for adhesion purposes. You may want to use primer...my plan would be to...

1: Sand
2: Primer
3: Sand
4: Midcoat
5: Graffiti design
6: Cleat coat
7: High grit sanding until clear coat is smooth

Maybe two tutorials: one for level 1 and another for level 2 etchers?
 
We'll see. I don't have too much time to even do the actual Etch Guide since I am trying to get Project Vash finished before I'm moving out. :( sigh and I still need hardware for the project.
 
While Wolverine did do an amazing job with his plexi case (barely remembered seeing it but damn it's nice) I'd still be interested in seeing the basics 'Etching How-To' guide, just having a collection of tips from which where to start on so I can experiment on my own would be nice. Just thinking of the design I'd like to have on my window all day today gave me an original idea for the window design itself to fit into the general theme of my case... Mod'ing, it never ends. :cool:
 
Yes, I too, would be very interested in seeing an etching guide. I'm trying to get off my ass and finish modding my antec case, needs more grinding and then I get to do the window which I was thinking of etching. Hint, hint, hint. Hurry up already. :)

It is about 1ft 1in high by 8in wide. This picture is surrounded by two hand painted hieroglyphs
on both left and right sides of the etching. It is etched on a acrylic sheet about an 1/8 inch thick. I am going to do like someone in another forum suggested using two sheets of acrylic etching it out making each glow.

This panel will be part of my quad xeon mod in this forum.

No I will not, Walk like an egyptian.
I just started to carve it out and so far it looks good. One thing to note, in order for it to look good, I must not be nervous or shaky or it will look like crap.
