Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

I'm loving every minute of this release, I didn't realize how special oblivion was for me.

A couple of things,

I had posts here on this forum complaining about the bad FPS outside knocking me down to 20FPS at that time with a good video card for that time. That is a good thing because it pushes the limits of our hardware, and that means better graphics for us and we can always upgrade to a 5090.

The game looks amazing, doesn't look so brown to me.

Not sure why this game is so special for me, it must have been a great time for me in 2006 when I was playing this game, I was living in Europe at that time, much better times for me. The music almost wants to make me cry to hear it again in this game.

I don't think a remaster of any other game would make me have these same feelings, even though I didn't put all that much time into the game at the time.

If this ends up on GOG cheap one day I might check it out. Lack of mod support is a huge con. Would rather have just seen them look to port the game to Creation or Creation 2, or the like.
My guess? They are getting rid of Creation Engine. Everyone seems to be just jumping on the Unreal Engine bandwagon, sadly. Companies are deciding that they'd rather just license it than make their own engine. While I understand, engine development is a LOT of work, it makes me sad because UE really isn't very good IMO.

But the color grading seriously sucks - it's like crushed/too dark and brown/muted.

would anyone really notice unless they've played thousands of hours of the Original?...or have them side-by-side to compare?...it's a valid complaint but I wonder how many people would notice...reminds me of the Lord of the Rings Blu-ray where there was a green tint

How are they going to shadow drop one of the greatest open world games of all time? Call it a remaster is a little insane, it's very obviously a high quality remake. I'm still in the middle of GTA 5 enhanced but once I'm done I'm hopping in without hesitation. The only question is, can I avoid making a stealth character and joining the thieves guild / dark brotherhood right out of the gate and try something else?

Does the game support FSR 4?

For those thinking about purchasing it from Steam...Fanatical has it for 17% off right now:

GMG looks to be the next cheapest at about $0.50 more, and then CDKeys a couple of bucks above that.

I am going sword and board this time around since combat looks to be better. Shield blocking seems much much better!

Replaying a game from decades ago can bring back an intense feeling of the time period during which you originally played the game. An ultra feeling of nostalgia.

Non hardcore gamers just don’t understand the sentiment here. Nice post.

This is for sure to bide time and generate some extra cash on the path to ES6, but I still appreciate it. Will be grabbing this tonight hopefully.

Reshades always make shit way too dark, gritty looking and they often only look good in one specific environment or lighting condition. ReShades are not mods, they are amateur hour trash.
I feel that. I've never found a reshade preset that I like. They always make things look worse. I suppose it should be no surprise as most games these days are actually color graded by professional colorists meaning the look is actually on purpose, for artistic reasons, not random.

I will say though Reshade itself I have found useful for dealing with HDR games that don't have a good implementation. No Man's Sky has very weird HDR settings and it goes way too hard on the brightness if you have a monitor that can handle it. So I use one of lilium's shaders to tone it down. I've also had a couple games with a pretty blurry presentation that the FiledityFX CAS filter did a good job sharpening up without going overboard.

But that's all custom filters to do just a little touchup. I've just never found a preset that I liked.

Remake = grounds up rewritten game
Remaster = original code updated / expanded.

They clearly explained this is not a full remake, just an UE5 graphics wrapper on the original.

If you're deep in to HDR you're probably already in the HDR Den discord. There is already a working version of RenoDX to fix the blackfloor and allow some tuning.

$50 for the base game and the deluxe with horse armor for $60 is a nice cliche touch. At least it isn't $70 I guess. No real interest from me though given the price for a remaster/remake or cash grab when Skyblivion mod is probably still coming out and the original is $5-10 on gog and can use mods. The body type 1/2 drama is free entertainment at least.

Game pass....

Fired it up, insane input lag. Even the menu cursor has like a half-second delay.
Will see if I can find a way to fix it over the coming days but likely refund coming.

Doing pretty good for a 20 year old game might hit 1st place for sales but won't come close to Palworld numbers. Proof positive you don't need a drawn out release for any game that is good.

I dunno, that list shows me that what I consider good and what the wider market consider good are often miles apart. PUBG is hot fucking garbage in my opinion, not something I'd ever want to play and man is it popular. DOTA 2, while well designed, is a MOBA which I will never understand the appeal of. BG3 is realistically the only game, other than Oblivion, on the list that would interest me.

Not hating on people who do like different things, but it is why I always take the "oh look at the Steam charts!" argument as if a game is good or not with a huge grain of salt. There's a lot of popular shit I just do not care for, at all.

Steam charts certainly give us an indication as to how well a game is performing financially. Concurrent player count numbers and how those trend absolutely indicate whether or not a game has good retention or not. A lack of player retention can be interpreted as being an indicator of whether or not a game is good or not as far as the average gamer is concerned. There are a lot of popular games I don't care for and some that I do. So those numbers are meaningless as a barometer for whether or not I will personally like a game.

people didn't even wait for reviews or first impressions shows that it's pure nostalgia...the vast majority of those games are multiplayer...meaning games I have zero interest in

A lot of people buying the game are people that already know whether or not they like it. They really don't need reviews to buy a graphical upgrade of a game they likely already have.

games are exaggerated in terms of visuals (especially the fantasy genre)...it's a fictional universe, not a nature documentary like Planet Earth...
So exaggerated green = brown?!

This is a recreation of a fictional universe that used to be lush green. But now they made the color palette look like fallout.

of course they do (or should)...a lot of these remasters are a downgrade in terms of visuals or have some compromises you need to live with...Horizon Zero Dawn, Bioshock Collection etc

So gameplay/combat/leveling is the same??

- If so, I'll just wabbajack a Heartland Redux modlist and call it a day..

I've literally never seen a remaster or remake that looked worse than the original game. Granted, sometimes there is some pushback if there is a significant change to the art direction. I'll give you that. Some remasters or remakes do have compromises compared to the originals, but I've never seen that manifest in the visuals. It's always censorship, missing features or cut content when were talking about remasters or remakes.

Financials make sense, retention is also a number that doesn't mean much to me since some of my favorite games have been "one-and-done" experiences. Two I can think of that top that list are Subnautica and Spiritfarer. Subnautica I did play a second time, but only a bit and didn't finish. The wonder of discovery was what made it so good for me. One of my all time favorite game experiences, I enjoyed it immensely, but I don't know that I'll ever play it again, as just building bases isn't that interesting to me. Spiritfarer was an extremely fun co-op experience with my GF and the story was particularly poignant given things going on in our lives at the time. However it didn't leave me wanting a second playthrough, it is a one-and-done.

So while it might be intellectually interesting what games are ones that people keep play and playing, I'm good with an experience that I like, but don't play again, just as I'm good with one that I pick up time and time again.
