Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

Why do you?
Wait, aren't you the one who said nobody's interested in this?

I think that nobody cares about this crap.

Wait for the release of the actual game. Everything hinges on whether or not this game was completely remade from the ground up - and that’s including re-worked dialogue.

This will determine the price of the game and, in all likelihood, the audience.

Yeah, it was you!

You say "nobody cares" and then proceed to care, VERY MUCH.

The main thing I keep thinking about this is that the biggest shortcomings and issues with TESIV weren't the visuals...

The game was really great looking back in the day, and a lot of popular modern indie games look far less nice or polished.

The issue was the pure, crystalised JANK that seeped from every corner, the wooden, unpleasant dialogue, the terrible and exploitable leveling system.

A visual overhaul A-La Halo MCE or Shadow of the Colossus won't fix the MAIN things that need fixing.

Completely.

All you have to do to see this is reinstall the game and play it.

In 2006, this game was groundbreaking on so many levels - but even for its time, the reviewers of the day said Oblivion was ‘rough around the edges’.

I played this game last night for the first time in almost 20 years and it was shocking.

I can only assume that this game has been completely remade. New combat. New recorded dialogue. Rebalanced levelling.

It will be incredibly disappointing if this is just a basic remaster with a bit of polish applied.

See, I don't think that will be the case.

As if Bethesda put in that much effort, they could have just made TES VI and made a metric Mc. Fuckton of money.

The Laziness to profit ratio of a graphic "re-skinning" is just about perfect for a "boost of money" project like this.

I really WANT it to be a refinement, clean up the old code, fix the wooden animations, remove loading pauses, change the difficulty scaling to be location-based and not relative to player level, and then up-res the textures and add some next-gen lighting or something.

But this DOES look like an UE5 wrapper over 20-year-old code, and done it a very forgettable, basic-bitch 'dark medieval' art style.

If that’s the case then I personally am not interested whatsoever.

For me, at $70 (if indeed that is the price), this has to be a full-on remake, updating everything for 2025.

Why was Dead Space 3 so successful (at least for me personally?) Because the 2023 version tricked me into thinking that the original game was sort of like that - when it wasn’t.

That, for me, is the sign of a great remake. Everything gets updated, but when you’re actually playing the modern day game you mistakenly think that the original was exactly like that.

Essentially, your ‘experience’ is the same, but the two games absolutely are not.

I’m uncertain if I’ve articulated myself here. It’s difficult to explain.

That's a pretty good explanation:

A good re-make is making someone who's never played the original feel the same way the original players did, regardless of how accurate the new rendition was to the original.

Silent Hill 2 comes to mind: That remake was not very similar to the original... it was much more combat-heavy and the layouts of the world were completely different, but everyone who played the original had very few complaints.

RE remakes as well: completely different but still very good ways to get a similar experience to those original games for modern audiences who REALLY don't want to deal with 'old game jank'

Stepping out of the sewers still leaves me in awe every time. I don't think any other TES game has had a moment like that, or any other WRPG in general.

These days, open-world games are a dime a dozen, but back in 2006 Oblivion truly was a groundbreaking game.

For older gamers, this moment Armenius is referring to really was a watershed moment in gaming.

I’ll bet most hardcore gamers who played this game at release will have fond memories of that exact moment.

And how many moments have we all experienced in games? - thousands upon thousands. How many moments like this do we all remember and share? Very few, I’d imagine.

Yes… that’s what I meant to say.

Since it includes the Shivering Isles DLC it has at least a bit of value, as Shivering Isles was one of the best DLC's ever. But I'll wait for the reviews and a sale, not paying full price for this.

Before everyone starts bitching about the price, or saying that the fan-created thing will be better, we really should wait until tomorrow to see what this release actually is.
riiiiight....

I think it's funny people are just riding on this game all over the internet I know for a fact Ultima Online is better along with Dark Age of Camelot. The reason this game exploded was the same reason Halo exploded console games and marketing.

The game mechanics on the other hand, those needed some modding. I could not deal with the "everything is always a fixed level in relation to you" shit.

This is why I quit playing it back then. I do remember installing a mod that addressed this but still didn’t finish the game.

I wonder if this issue is addressed in the remaster?

More than that, my issue was unique quest rewards not levelling with you, needing to track what level to be to get the best reward for certain quests.

So this is a remake not a remaster. From
What we know they did a lot of balancing and changes to skills and combat.

So, I’m hoping the jank etc that we all remember is gone.

I am interested how much they changed shield combat. I am hoping it has a better flow.

We don't know anything yet.

afawk its a remaster, its still using underlying code from the og with new graphics on top. its not built from the ground up, which is a remake.
unless you have something official to share....

soon...

They just said, in the stream, completely new assets, including entirely new characters models that lip sync more 2025 than 2006. A completely different lighting system, etc. Much more than just polish.

Also… the detail. You’d have to be blind not to see that the old game has been completely re-worked. That’s literally years of work.

Call it what you will, but, yeah, pretty extensive.

yes, its straddling the line between remaster and remake, but the "brain" is still the og.

re the ninja edit: yes, we get it, its what we have all been saying, the whole time.

I bought it... like an idiot. If I couldn't previously run it over 60 FPS because of Gamebryo, I surely won't be able to run it faster because of UE5. BRING ON STUTTERFEST. We'll see after work.

Edit: Steam download died unusually. I'm guessing every other idiot is also trying to download it now.

I want to see the sliders, show me the sliders. That's my bechdel test.

Man I can't wait to get home to play. The nostalgia is gonna be peak.

If the underlying structure if the game just reskin it and you have the same game but better instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.

What KazeoHin said…

From the livestream reveal, this is exactly what the developer strove for, and it’s obvious that a huge amount of love and work went into creating a new Oblivion that feels like the old Oblivion.

You could not ask for more.
