Eizo FlexScan EV2736W

I just spoke to NEC sales asking them if the NEC EA294WMi LED backlit panel is PWM free.
He admitted that he did not know what pulse width modulation is but he will forward my request to engineering and get back to me via email.
 
Received this reply from NEC: The EA294WMI-BK does not have PWM, only our CCFL back lights use PWM.

You are very kind to help him out as he had a whole flora of questions. But was he not more concerned about finding a monitor with low noise, due to his sensitive hearing and very little backlight bleed? Though if you look at it on the bright side he now at least knows that there is a minimal risk of eyestrain with that display.
 
Very nice way of redeeming me for my oversight. His focus was indeed on aural aspects and backlight bleeding, thanks for pointing that out. :)

Buzzing can vary from unit to unit.
Am respectful of the fact that anomalies of various types frequently show themselves in any display's particular unit, and in that regard you are of course correct.
I have a suspicion that the challenge to scale to a resolution in other than a display's native aspect - while viewing certain types of text - is associated with (but not necessarily causing) the sometime appearing EV2736 buzzing. I've read about that happening in another monitor whose name I can't recall at the moment, and I suspect that is what PRAD was attempting to describe.

Tested both resolutions you asked for and can confirm that no buzzing is detected.

No black bars.

I also require larger text for reading but would recommed you to download the Nosquint addon for either firefox or Chrome. Then you can either set the required zoom and text size globaly or tailor make it for each individual site you visit, if you want that. I think it is a better solution then lowering the res, cause it really doesn't look that good if you do it that way.
 

A bit of a confusing review, partially the google translation that adds to it. But if we address the cons they write about.

- Inaccurate sRGB gamut

Seems to be a 50/50 chance to ge a unit that is well calibrated in the sRGB mode. A colorimeter is recommended if you want to be sure of accurate colors.

- Backlight (but without lumens)

Does the reviewer claim that the unit have DUE or needs DUE, im not entirely sure what is the case here but the EV2736 does NOT have DUE. He in the end adds that uniformity issue might only be a problem with his unit.

- Higher inputlag

EV2736 have 23ms input lag according to PRAD, this reviewer claims 28, so he is a bit off.

- Price

Depends on where you live. In Northern Europe the price is very attractive for this unit. You also have to factor in the fact that Eizo offer 5 years of warranty compared to the norm of 3 years and then calculate what the extra cost would be to buy 2 additional years of warranty from that company.

Thank you for answering each of my questions and offering your suggestion to use the Nosquint add-on.

My Eizo FlexScan EV2736W arrived today. I took it out of the box only a few hours ago.

Initial Impressions are all positive:
No dead or stuck pixels. Has only a light anti-glare coating, quite nice. Have been surfing the web with the resolution set to 1600 X 900 and the text is not blurry at all. Tomorrow I'll try the Nosquint add-on to compare.

Out of the box the brightness and contrast looks just fine but I have yet to calibrate the display either with the (a) software program which I think is on this CD disk that I haven't installed yet; or (b) using the i1Display Pro colorimeter and its own software that I purchased along with the monitor. I'll be expecting to see an even better looking screen then.

I spoke to Eizo tech support today and they told me that the EV2736 does not support hardware calibration which he defined as what happens when the colorometer accesses a board built into the monitor -as will some of their more expensive priced displays and my NEC 2690WUXI will do. He made it a point to say that the display can still be calibrated with a colorimeter but the device would be making the adjustments via my computer's GPU instead of through a hardware board in the monitor. I'll install the i1Display Pro software and experiment with the colorimeter over the weekend.

I have yet to play around with the onscreen display and see how the Movie and Text modes appear as well as how the User 1, User 2, and sRGB modes appear.

It is both a relief and a pleasure to be viewing web pages in standard gamut instead of the overly saturated cartoon like colors seen in a wide gamut monitor (my NEC 2690). I'm quite content relinquishing wide gamut 97% AdobeRGB coverage to the photographers and others who desire it.

Viewing the display in a totally dark room there was zero backlight bleeding and just a touch of PLS cyan glow in lower right corner along with only a small amount of green hue near the left side - which is totally unnoticed when lights are on or viewing a non total black screen. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the backlight diffusion was quite evenly disbursed on the totally dark screen, I was especially surprised to see that the backlighting in the EV2736 was more evenly dispersed than the backlighting in my NEC2690WUXI which has a ATW polarization filter. Kudos to LED versus CCFL backlighting?

It's nothing specific for just this Eizo model. Hardware LUT calibration is usually only offered with more expensive screens regardless of brand. So you would also have to calibrate through the GPU if you bought a VP2770 and Dell U2713HM, etc.

I have yet to play around with the onscreen display and see how the Movie and Text modes appear as well as how the User 1, User 2, and sRGB modes appear.

If you use a DVI-D cable you can install the screenmanager pro software and set the screen to automatically chose different modes depending on what you do. I personally set the screenmanager to switch to Movie mode when i start MPC-HC to watch a movie or tv-series. And then switch to text mode when I start a browser, and for games I use one of the user modes.

My EV2736 appears to have a luminance limitation. At 100% brightness my display will put out no more than 79 - 93 cd/m2

I phoned Eizo, an engineer is supposed to call me back later today after looking into it.

Eizo telephoned and advised me to set Eco View and Power Saver to OFF.

I did that and all is fine now:
100% Brightness = 244 cd/m2
41% Brightness = 120 cd/m2

The EV2736 interpolates lower-than-native-resolutions very nicely. Reading text in a lower resolution like 1600 X 900 looks very clear so I found no need to use the Nosquint browser add-on. The EV2736 has only a light antiglare coating, and is free of flicker. Because it is an sRGB gamut monitor colors display without oversaturation. Still can't get over how evenly dispersed the backlight dispersion looks, it's cleaner than my polarized NEC2690WUXI display.



Summary: Turn off the Eco View and Power Saver if you want to achieve optimal lighting.

After toggling Power Saver back to ON and leaving Eco View set to OFF, I can confirm that it is only Eco View that needed to be OFF.

Summary: Turn off the Eco View if you want to achieve targeted lighting. Power Saver may be left on if desired.

Good to know that your dilemma was easily resolved. Wonder if the Svethardware reviewer had the same problem when he added the "- Backlight (but without lumens) " to his list of cons?

Depends on what your requirements are. Are you a hardcore gamer who want the absolut lowest overal inputlag? What display do you have now? I can however assure you that you don't have to worry about backlight bleed with this display.
 
I currently have a dell 2407wfp and I'm a regular gamer but not hardcore competitive. I just want a good all round 1440p display with no backlight bleed. Unfortunately most ips displays seem to suffer from bleed at the moment. The u2713hm I tried was appalling :(

If Im not mistaken the 2407wfp have around 33ms of total lag. If you are not bothered by that when you game you shouldn't have a problem with the EV2736 with a total lag of 23ms, about the same as the u2713hm. Viewsonic VP2770 have according to PRAD.de even lesser lag with an average around 18ms (overdrive 12ms).
Both displays have good quality control, alhough there seem to be 50/50 chance of getting an Eizo where the out of box colors in sRGB mode are not perfectly calibrated. So if that bothers you and you do not own a a tool for calibration you might be safer off buying the Viewsonic. Otherwhise they are both really lovely units. Comparing warranty the Eizo offers 5 years vs 3 years for the Viewsonic.
 
I ordered an Eizo 2736 plus an i1Display Pro1 from PCM.com last week. I've done business with them before, they have great after sales support. One of their nearby warehouses had the items in stock. I received the monitor and coloromiter the day after ordering, in perfect condition with no dead or stuck pixels.

Native resolution is 2560X1440 (16:09) at which webtext is going to look too small for reading, so I lowered my surfing resolution to 1600 X 900. It calibrated to a 901:1 contrast ratio, the text is clear and non-aliased in all resolutions. Am an avid gamer but I didn't run any tests for lag since I am not into online competitive shooters where that component would be critical. Games in 2560X1440 look crisp, without any visible ghosting or bothersome aliasing.

The panel has a pleasantly light amount of anti-glare coating, no screen door, no glare, zero back light bleeding, and absolutely no flickering. The color gamut on this monitor is sRGB by default, - not having to view overly saturated colors on the web is now a joy.

I have only one complaint and it is minor, the labels underneath the on-screen-display buttons are printed too lightly, making the labels difficult to read in all but bright room light.

For those who are into calibration and ICC profiling.

Performed an initial calibration choosing a Large preset amount of color patches (462 patches) - with a D65 white point, 120 cd/m2 luminance, 2.20 gamma, and native contrast ratio for targets. It took 7 minutes from start to finish. Calibration using a medium amount of patches (211) would have taken 5 minutes. Calibrating every four weeks will be sufficient for my needs. I created a Version 4 ICC profile then configured the Window7 Color Manager and the Firefox Color Manager to use the Version 4 ICC profile for default. The Windows 7 profile can be found at C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color.

I viewed the ICC Version 4 test image at http://www.color.org/version4html.xalter and confirmed that both version 2 and version 4 were activated.

Interesting in that the review stated that glow isn't that bad on this model. Have owners here noticed the same thing? Is it the panel (do other 27" PLS monitors have minimal glow) or is it just this Eizo?

Do you know if it's due to the panel, or is Eizo using some sort of filter or something similar to minimize glow? Anyone compare it to the NEC A-TW models (2490)? I believe one owner had the 2690, and mentioned how glow was still pretty minimal in comparison.
 
The Qnix and VIewsonic I tested had less glow vs. my former 2011 850D and the 970D I had a few weeks ago.

I think it's the coating since both the Qnix and Viewsonic were less reflective and grainy vs. the 850D. The PB278Q's coating was also slightly better than my 850's, cant remember if it had less glow though.

Right now I have the Qnix next to the P242W & the Qnix is less reflective and has less glow but the P242W's coating is lighter.

What type of coating does the 27" PLS models have? I assume they are all the same between monitor manufacturers as it's the same panel. I also assumed it was semiglossy, similar to the older 850? If semiglossy, I wasn't aware it could get much lighter, besides full on gloss.

If it's less grainy that the semiglossy 850, and reduces glow, it may be a nice thing to see on other size panels. It's certainly has to be cheaper than using an A-TW... may be an okay compromise.
 
They had semi-glossy coating originally, now they are definitely more matte and less grainy, but not as clear as LG's new coating (look at the U2413H, PA249Q and U2713H).

Just got home and compared my Qnix to the P242W, the Qnix has far less corner glow at close distances

Hmm...

How would the coating really affect glow? I mean, in a really noticeable way? Plenty of heavily coated monitors have tons of glow (2410/2412 era of IPS), so if anything, I'd think a heavier coating like those would block some of the glow -- yet that wasn't the case in the past.

The panel itself could in theory produce less glow, but you stated the 970D was a bit glow-ier, so I guess that isn't it.

Just wondering how the coating would make a large difference, if even heavier coatings didn't prevent glow in the past. An extra filter of some sort could do it, I suppose, but unless Samsung sticks that on newer panels, not sure what could do it.

Im also a bit dubious as to why the coating would affect the glow to any larger degree. If you read the review made by "DEAD" he claims that the Eizo have very weak glow effect compared to all the other new PLS/IPS models he have tested.

Google translated:

Previous contact by myself with Eizo UK rep hints that the panel might be modified by Eizo. However the rep didn't want to go into detail over email and asked of me to call him for a detailed technical explanation. I however explained that I was not living in the UK and much prefered if he could send me the explanation via email. Sadly I did not get any reply to my request.

I have also had feedback from Swedish users who is pleasantly surprised by the minimal glow effect compared to similar new displays. You also have the user Supersnake who have made similar claims when he reviewed his display in a previous post in this thread.

So either that russian reviewer have a vivid imagination or there might be some actual truth to his statement.I don't own both models myself so I can't really compare them side by side. I am however very satisfied with my display and the reviewer seem to like it too as he claimed it was the best screen of the new displays tested by him.
