Well, I was looking over ebay and found this.

People are getting away with gutting reference cards and returning them, after i found this one, I found several others.
So watch out be for you bid on something that is not what it seems.
I guess this goes back to the old anecdote, "Don't judge a book by it's cover".

right, imm agine ppl getting overly exited and just bidding on it, i ended up buying a really old processor accidentally because of stuff like this.

Not surprised. Did you know buyers can submit an "Item not received" claim with paypal after the tracking expires with the shipping carrier? It happened to me a couple of months ago. I almost lost nearly $500 and the buyer has been scamming other sellers for MONTHS with no action taken. USPS keeps tracking for 120 days, but buyers can submit an INR Claim for up to 6 months!

Reminds of when Xbox came out and someone sold the "xbox box", all you got was the box the console came in. But people were too excited and hasty to get their hands on it that they didn't read carefully. And to be fair, they were intentionally mislead.
 
I have had buyers invoking PayPal's buyer protection under "unauthorized transaction" because they apparently "don't recognize what they bought on eBay". What a bunch of scammers.
 
Geez, the anecdotes listed in this thread. This is why I tend to always buy my stuff brand new all the time, and sell with "no return" policies. Avoided all this nonsense doing things that way, even if I pay more and sell at lower prices.

I can't accept that eBay didn't require the seller to issue a refund. No way a refund would not be given when the title is clearly misleading like that one was unless the Item Description clearly stated the item was a photo and not the Xbox itself. If you read the eBay policy, it states that when it comes to disputes ebay makes the decision and both seller and buyer MUST abide by it. As far as I'm aware, there is no legal recourse for buyer or seller once eBay decides a matter. You can submit an appeal to eBay about the decision but after that, as they say, "that's that".

With used GTX 970 prices averaging $200 with no warranty, I stopped shopping on ebay and will only buy new from Newegg from now on. They have the best return policy and sometimes they offer to waive the restock fee for customer loyalty ...

Good Bye eBay, it was fun while it lasted ...

For computer parts I either buy from here, or new from reputable sources. Once in a while I roll the dice on a warehouse deal or used item with Prime shipping from Amazon.
 
seems like a good deal for a stock cooler.... ;)
I guess if you cant read the description, quite deceptive however.

Let me fill you in on a fun fact. Designating your listing as "No Return" means diddly squat. The buyer can file a SNAD claim with paypal and ship you back an empty box. Doesn't matter if you sold the guy a $2000 rolex, they will reach into your bank account and refund every last red cent to the buyer. Go check the terms yourself if you don't believe me.

Pfft what a clown. Nice way to assume information you don't have a clue about. I don't take payment via Paypal buddy. I believe you can shove your SNAD, rolex and red cents up your fun fact.
 
I've had this happen to me via Amazon, where I bought a 690GTX and was "fulfilled" via a 3rd party seller who sent a 480 with a 690GTX Fan assambly. Contacted Amazon and told them and the guys wasn't even shocked, he sounded like it happened all the time. Returned it and had it shipped directly from Amazon's warehouse with mo problem.
 
I have had some shady buyers on ebay before. I tried to sell a 1080 Ti recently, about a week after they came out so it was a hot item. First buyer emailed me about 30 minutes after the auction closed and said he had an emergency and didn't have the money. Then I relisted, and the next buyer never paid and ghosted all my attempts to contact him. Ended up just selling to a friend at work to avoid the nonsense. Also, a few years back I sold a Sony HMZ headset on ebay. I think it ended around $500. The buyer emailed me a few days later and said there was a problem with the screen, but he fixed it and it cost him $200. I'm almost certain he was scamming me, but I had no way to prove it was working when I sent it, and it could have maybe been damaged in shipping. In any case, I just paid him $200 to get off my back and not ruin my 100% positive score on ebay.

Did you ask for any receipts for the $200 he spent? I'd at least want that and probably a copy of the check or credit card statement showing payment then I'd be more than happy to pay. Agreed, sounds like he wanted $200 off. With smartphones it's so easy to take a few photos and even a video of something working that I usually at least do photos.
I had something damaged in shipping once going to Canada and the young kid was pretty upset that Canada Post mashed it. It was really bad, so bad that it appeared like they were punishing him almost. I told him if he was willing to pay for shipping to and fro, that I'd flatten the card out between some books and then try to RMA it for him since he wasn't in the US. Ended up getting him a new card and sent it again, this time no smashed box. I stopped shipping outside the US but I did what I can, me and that kid who is now grown up still keep in touch.
 
Similar to this, you will regularly find new video cards listing for a stupid low amount - $14.44 or something like that - as a buy it now. If you look at the listings you'll find they are all using the same photos, although frequently not stock photography. The seller accounts are usually new with little to no feedback. I saw some for new EVGA GeForce GTX 1050ti cards just recently.

You can try to buy one and obviously it's a scam, so you end up just filing a claim with ebay and getting your money back after a few days.

BUT!

Some of them will list an extremely slow shipping time, so like, you buy today and it will say something like "estimated delivery between October 15 and November 23". Thing is, even if the seller is non-responsive, even if the seller's account has been removed from ebay, even if a tracking number was never uploaded (sometimes they give you a fake tracking number) ebay still has you wait until the end of the "estimated delivery" time before you can file an "item not received" claim.

So while yes, they heavily favor the buyer in any and all claims, they still have idiot customer service reps who say "well just because we deleted the seller account due to suspicious activity doesn't mean he was a scammer, so you have to wait until the delivery date is past even though he has never replied to you or given you tracking information, because MAYBE he shipped it."

Basically: if you are going to take a chance on an item because you think it might have been listed with a typo for a really low price, check the estimated delivery date first, so if you have to file a claim you don't have to wait a month or more to do it.
 
On the side note I ordered MSI GTX 1080 from Amazon Warehouse and somebody put back GTX 1060 and sent it back to Amazon. I let Amazon know it's a common issue with so many crooks around.

might just be me but i do think its pretty fair that you have to wait for the agreement to be actually violated before you can claim scam.
 
Yep, it's totally fair. No argument there.

But if it's too good to be true and it says 1+ month for shipping, keep in mind your money will be tied up for that entire time if it turns out you've been had.

Also, ebay makes you wait even if they've cancelled the seller's account because they've been identified as a scammer, even if they have no way to verify that anything has been shipped. That part bugs me, especially because, as a seller, I've had buyers take advantage of ebay's return policy regularly, and ebay always sides with the buyer. But in the one instance where they actually identify a seller as a scammer, they suddenly decide to give the seller the benefit of the doubt and make the buyer wait.

wasn't the box factory sealed? I'm presuming it was new since you didn't say you bought open box.

It was suposed to be used - like new but the box was torn and not in the best condition. It was checked and sealed by Amazon. I'm upset that some cock decided to steal GTX 1080 and Amazon employee had no idea what to look for. I think that Amazon's generous return policy will eventually change.

Amazon warehouse deals is what I said. Sometimes you might get lucky with new sealed stuff too, but the department isn't for brand new items like their main site is.
 
This is why i stopped using ebay. There's too many scammers. I just sold my 2 980ti cards here for much less than I could have gotten on ebay, simply because ebay is nothing but scamming douches anymore.
