EA Taking Lessons From BF4 Launch

Speaking during a conference call, EA's Patrick Söderlund explained how the company is learning from its mistakes during the Battlefield 4 launch.

To the final point, which is how are we learning from this? The challenge that we've faced with Battlefield 4 were different from anything that we've seen before with other games. There were different issues that only manifest its scale in the post-launch live environment. We're taking multiple steps to evaluate what occurred and incorporate those learnings into our development process for future products, so we don't experience the same problems again.

BS. They should have learned those lessons from 2142 and BF3. They released early to get ahead of COD, plain and simple.

2142 was worth it in the end though, man I loved that game

My sentiments exactly. They took a chance so they could get their foot in the door. They did it. At least it's not as bad as GTAV Online. The main feature they advertised is STILL not available yet.

Corporate culture is the biggest problem, EA is circling the drain on a consumer confidence level.

The lesson to learn is don't let your bean counters dictate to the dev and tech teams. With EA being 90% (rage number pulled out of ass) bean counters I am sure that the onus will fall to the dev/tech teams to "do better" rather than the suits who set ridiculous time tables.

Learning from your mistakes implies that in the future you will strive to not repeat them. I am sure they now "know" what went wrong, but that does not mean they actually "learned" anything.

Next time release more than one map for people that preordered the game to test?

BF4 is now forgotten...you only have a small window to launch a game...3 months for a multiplayer game...hopefully the lessons learned here will be applied to BF5

I wish EA would follow THQ. Then hopefully Ubisoft doesn't buy/publish any of the good IPs.

It seems you hear this bs every year from management, but nothing changes...because stock holders that's why.

More of the same BS cycle: Next game will be better promise!

As long as it's selling well then no lessons will be learned, the "instant gratification" consumer base doesn't give them much reason to change much, they throw a tantrum for a while and then goldfish memory sets in, rinse and repeat.

From a few days ago (and possibly the same conference call):

"We did see some impact of the current-gen softness that was indicated by Andrew and Blake in their prepared statements, but this is not, we believe, a link to any quality issues,” said chief operating officer Peter Moore. Additionally, CEO Andrew Wilson addressed the concerns about Battlefield 4’s technical performance head on.

“Shortly after Battlefield 4 went live, we began hearing from some players in the community who were experiencing issues with the game,” Wilson said in prepared statements. “The Battlefield team acted swiftly to address the issues through game updates, and they continue to make refinements as part of our live service to ensure a great game experience for all Battlefield 4 players.”

Funny how quick the statement changes when people call bullshit.

Heard this same song and dance from them after Sim City, they didn't listen then, they're not going to listen now

Those twatwaffles haven't learned any lessons. I'll believe it when I see it.

The BF4 beta ran better for me than the release game did. Siege of Shanghai was crash city on release and the servers were a total mess.

And to date, they keep breaking things. Look at the forums. Just disgusting.

We were pushing innovation heavily and we're delivering 60 frames per second gameplay for 64 players plus the ability to connect via mobile tablet as a commander into the product, coupled those with some very innovative features in the gameplay side. Based on our prelaunch testing, our beta performance, we were confident the game was ready when it was launched.

OK that last part is BS. What happened to BF4 is the same thing that happens to all games where the producer negotiates an unrealistic release date and then QA and developers yell and scream to try and get more development and testing time. This inevitably fails.

Then the product is released into the open and of course all of the unresolved issues start pouring in. Then the producer goes out the press and gives BS excuses like you see above. Rinse / Repeat.

"We're learning from our mistakes"

Translation: we're trying to figure out how we can squeeze more money out of gamers before we release another buggy POS...

We had problems that were hard. Fortunately we learned something.

::applause::
::EA Stock rises::

You and I: WTF is wrong with people? :(

I wish EA would follow THQ. Then hopefully Ubisoft doesn't buy/publish any of the good IPs.

Yea, hopefully EA follows THQ by declaring bankruptcy and shuts down. But that aint ever gonna happen as long as they own the madden series and fifa...

I should've learned from my mistakes. I got the game on launch. Pffftttt... Should've just waited.

Yes, they've learned something.
They can release buggy POS game after buggy POS game and the suckers keep buying.
AND to make things worse...
Said suckers keep pre-ordering!

Did anyone read the article... this isn't some sort of real we "learnt our lesson statement", it's a bunch damage control excuses.

So on the first segment, the what happened part is when Battlefield 4 launched, it was a very complex game, launching on 2 entirely new console platforms, as well as current-gen and PC.

Shortly after launch, however, we began hearing about problems from our player community, and the development team quickly began to address the situation. So what have we done since we encountered the problems is we were fortunate to have an architecture in place that allows us to adjust and update the game rapidly, and that's actually what we've done. We released multiple software updates across all platforms to resolve the primary issues and game stability has significantly increased. To the final point, which is how are we learning from this?

Yea, right... it's like telling your little brother when you were kids that the reason you kicked him in the head was because you thought you saw a spider on his face. He was dumb enough to believe it though.

I'm calling it now. Titanfall will be a buggy mess when it launches and suffer as much (maybe more) then bf4.

Translation: We launched an unfinished product before COD release. We know BF fans will still play this game no matter what so we will continue to fuck them and mask our incompetence in a better fashion next time.

I should've learned from my mistakes. I got the game on launch. Pffftttt... Should've just waited.

Agreed. Or a step further, and move to NO MORE EA games allowed in my house. Which is a shame, b/c the UFC title for the PS4 actually looks good.

But I'm sure I can find plenty of other non-EA games to occupy my spare time with.

"Learned..."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA......*breathe*......HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

This wasn't their first launch, so they don't get to play the "surprised, it broke with scale" card.

As soon as star citizen finally comes out I'll be done with BF4. I haven't bought premium either even though I've got birdies in my ear telling me I should get it. I'm like, seriously? The game doesn't even work right. Why would I throw another $50 on this junk?

2142 was worth it in the end though, man I loved that game

The gameplay trailer they released for 2142 was one of the best I've ever seen and heard. That was a masterful piece of media. And yes, that game, when finally fixed, was phenomenal.

Corporate culture is the biggest problem, EA is circling the drain on a consumer confidence level.

So many people don't realise how much the attitude at the top affects the entire company. A board of directors can be uplifting or cancerous in a company, I think we can guess what the EA board is like.

They lost sight of the games, all they make is brown and bloom dudebro pew pew fest and dubebro football now, eventually even frat kids grow up. There's only so long you can hang your hat on the flip flops, Jeeps, and backwards hats set. Especially when you realise how difficult it has become to tell these shooters apart and to tell which year's FIFA or Madden somebody is playing.

How about gamers taking lessons from the BF4 launch and never buying another EA launch title again?

Yep. ALL DICE's BF games are just like this. Buggy pieces of shit till about 6 months later when it's all mostly fixed and you just have an amazing time. But it's always been, Battlefield: An amazing experience when it's not being a buggy piece of shit.

That shit won't ever happen. This was done purposely IMHO. Just like I and many others have stated. They HAD to release before COD. If they want any hope of having any success on the level of COD they need to get people to play the game. Because once COD drops, the fans DONT GIVE A FUCK about ANYTHING else. It doesn't matter if the game is "better". They know COD. They remember COD. They are comfortable with COD.

It sucks but they had to. Now, personally, I have never experienced the issues that are pretty widely reported but I was one of the suckers that pre-ordered it and barely played it due to GTAV sucking up all of my play time. But when I did sit down to play it, I had a non-buggy experience. Now I play it a lot and I haven't noticed issues yet.
