E3’s attempt to be a low-key and “serious” gaming conference resulted in dropped attendance and publisher withdrawals. This year’s E3 returns to the high-energy and glitzy presentation of their more successful past and Reuters takes a look at the event, which is set to kick off Monday.

"E3 used to be a great event (that) helped to push the games to a more mass market audience," said Yves Guillemot, chief executive of France's Ubisoft…"In the last two or three years it was almost a nonevent," he said. "We think it will be a major event -- the show has to be big. We want to attract more and more talent from all the other industries (so) they can see what is happening now."

The gaming biz shouldn't be about being serious. It should be about having fun and doing it BIG! whenever possible ;)

Whatever moron decided to make the change in the first place needs to be fired.

How could anyone possibly believe it would be a good idea!?

Games = Fun Entertaining, and enjoyable

E3 was none of those for a period of time there.

Basically, it was useless to even report on cause nobody cared

Booth Babes...yes...coverage good....fap fap fap

This is why I hate the world. Why have serious discourse when we can drool over tits all day? Fucking morons.

Suits and numbers do not sell games, nor do they get people interested in them, why would anyone take E3 out of its element?

The idea behind cutting it down was that developers were causing their development schedules to revolve around E3, i.e. stopping all major development on games to create demos/trailers specifically for E3, or in some cases releasing shitty, buggy products to keep up with the E3 schedule.

Whether or not cutting it down worked in that regard is hard to say, but having E3 as big as it was (and apparently will be again) was some of the reason that a lot of people cared about it in the first place, so it's good to see it coming back.

Since when is pretending to save a princess as a man who grows strong by eating special mushrooms serious?

If you want serious, go play Eve, nobody takes gaming as seriously as that soap-operatic bunch.

I was at the last E3 before they terminated the Booth Babes. It was fun. Attendance for the following dry E3 was decent, but the thing was a ghost town every year after that.

Maybe they should lay out some ideas for devs if they don't have a product ready. such as "If your game is no where near ready for demo'ing at the event, just hire some models and put your logo on their pasties, you'll be fine."

My favorite E3s were in 1999 (probably because it was my first), 2000 for the MGS2 trailer, and 2003 when Valve first demonstrated the Half Life 2 and the Source engine (I was fortunate enough to be on the very first showing on the first day). It was the first game engine I'd seen with physics simulation done at that high a level, pretty amazing. Ruined the rest of the show for me, even other bleeding edge games like Doom 3 didn't impress me after that. :)

It did get kind of old though, so in a weird way I'm glad it took a two year hiatus, maybe this year won't feel as tiresome and "been there done that" as the last few.

Tickets cost $500. I'd rather spend that on games, than go to a con ABOUT games.

Tickets are free for people with entertainment or journalism credentials that registered before May 1st. I don't know anybody that has paid to get on the convention floor at E3, I certainly never have.

Yeap, I hope this doesn't negatively affect budgets, timelines, or game quality. People tend to forget why E3 changed...it wasn't just for fun to take away booth babes.

I'm pretty sure that it already has. The last few days there have been nothing but trailers, and I'm positive that there will be tons of E3 builds to play at the show. That stuff doesn't happen by itself, unfortunately. The only way out is if a developer decides not to create a demo for the show, and in many cases they might not even have a choice because of their publisher.

Not to mention, calling everything that has a differing viewpoint a "fucking moron" pretty well shows you have nothing of merit to your argument, so you just insult. Nice try though. The booth babes thing is a tongue in cheek aspect more than you probably realize.

(mostly thoughts of my tongue pressed between their cheeks, but thats for another front page flame fest right).

Seriously gaming ...> I hear Sims 3 is out, go live your life through it, I bet you'll have a blast.

Good if they actually make it a better, bigger and flashier event. It's good to have something like this for consumers, and developers also, where big releases could be made. Booth babes are also a must.

Would you be happier if they had the Chip n Dales there?

I think you meant the Chippendales, unless you were indeed talking about the Disney chipmunk duo of Rescue Rangers fame. ;)

Great, now I have the Rescue Rangers theme running through my head. Thanks Dekoth. I guess that's better than having Chippendales running through my head.

I was over there registering earlier today, got to play some BF 1943 on the way out.

I gotta say, I was sick of E3 for a while so I think this two years hiatus on the big show was a good thing, because I'm actually excited for it again!
