Droid

Got a Droid. Happy upgrade from Palm Treo. Saving $$ and we'll move the Mrs across to one as well next month if she likes it.

Still havent decided on whether I want a droid or wait for teh HTC Passion. It's rumored to have a 4.3" screen...might be a bit too big for my tastes.... :(

Are you the Verizon rep or a friend going after a laugh?

You have seen my video right? I'm not making this up. the autoscroll issue happens to me multiple times in every brosing session. Its more than possible, I assure u.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocoxDHg09tE

Does that look staged to you? Its happened on all 3 DROIDs.

Easy , I believe you . I should not have joked like that. In my experience I have seen a customer or two go througth the same thing with LG envy 2 devices.

Here is what I would recommend. Call 18009220204 enter your cell phone number when prompted. Press zero after a few moments to cut through all of the menu stuff and get a human on the line.

Calmly tell them what you have been through and tell them you want to go to a local Corporate store , have them open a box in front of you and fire it up, You want to see it working perfectly and then you want to take it home. They will comply.

Or just do what I did and switch to the iPhone. it works and works great. Best phone I've used so far. Jodiuh and I both went through multiple storms and tours so I hate to feel his pain with going through multiple droids now. Your local verizon store has to hate seeing you.

AT&T needs to make a commercial that has a bunch of crashing and ask is there a phone for that and just show Verizon's phones. hehe. Anyways, hope you get it resolved without having to switch over to the dark side Jodiuh.

From my understanding with talking to my verizon rep today, he wanted to know why I switched carriers to which I gave him the detailed list of issues I had with my storms and tours which he knew of, as well as my recent rash of billing problems with verizon which is what really turned me away from them and to AT&T. His response was that the latest smartphone offerings from verizon were plagued with numerous issues and he wasn't recommending any of them to county employees due to a variety of issues which were both software and hardware related depending on which phone you chose. He then had the audacity to ask me to come back and he would get me a free Samsung Rogue or EnV Touch which were the two phones he was recommending. I havent played with the droid at all and only knew one person who got one and he took his back, but it seems there are just as many problems with the Droid as there were with the Storms, or could this just be an anomaly for certain areas to have so many problems it seems?

Translation , he does not have the money to keep them in stock and or he is unqualified to set them up for business use.

IMO any bigger than the Droid is too big..
I actually feel as though the DROID's screen width is too small. The iPod touch may have a technically smaller screen, but it sure felt wider...and thus easier to read in portrait.

Easy , I believe you . I should not have joked like that.
I did see the smiley, but I'm a bitter Jod right now. :D

Thanks for all the info, I'll definitely look into doing that. Although the last time I went in, one of the asst mgrs pretty much openly mocked me about all gadgets having problems. Some of the wildest shit came out of his mouth. Then the girl told me they were all talking about my situation and that she should just refuse to give me a phone. It's that kind of crap that drives me nuts.

So I've gotten a bunch of text written down and a few videos of my problems. After seeing all of this, I hope they change their tune. Because so far, in my experience most VZW stores and managers out here have massive dongs up their rear. I even fought w/ one earlier this year just to get my new every 2, then again trying to get the BOGO berry deal.

Also, I finally got a chance to go to a bud's place and check out the wifi on another wap. Same problem. I got a couple page cannot be displayed errors and a whole bunch of infinite loading screens. After that, I pretty much gave up and put the phone down. Forza 3 was much more enjoyable anyway. :D

Thanks again for the info, I'll give that a shot after I check out my other bud's DROID. If it happens on his, then I'll just say forget it. If not, then I'll pursue this "fabled" working DROID.

EDIT: I love posting on my pc. I love it because it doesn't fuck w/ me.

Actually the iPhone's screen IS physically wider. Also, the Droid has a narrower aspect ratio, making the screen feel even more cramped. The saving grace is that the Droid's screen is much higher resolution.

I've had my droid for a week now, and I love it, only a few minor annoyances. The screen's touch seems to be not pixel perfect, it seems to register slightly below and to the right of where I think I'm touching.

On windows mobile devices, it was possible to calibrate the screen's tap detection, does anyone know if its possible with the droid?

Ready for this? DROID #4 has been in use for 4 hours and NOT ONCE has it autoscrolled on me. Its also getting full bars on wifi and 3g, something none of the previous phones could accomplish.

Unfortunately there's still a bunch of other ikssues that I'm not going to waste time explaining as my hands simoly don't like the keyboard enough to do so.

So long droid dudes! Good luck!

Good luck, I don't blame you to much. If I had less than 1/2 the issues you have had I'd be the same way.

I haven't read most of this thread, but chock me up as another happy Droid customer. I've had it four days now and it's solid. My fellow iphone co-workers are jealous. They like their iPhones still, but are reluctant to admit Verizon hit this one out of the park.

Picked up a droid after work today and all I can say is wow. I'm coming from a Blackjack 2 with WinMo 6.5. I'm glad I didnt hold out for one of the new WinMo phones coming out.

I have lots of friends with iPhones, and I can safely say this thing is much better(imo).

Is there an update out yet?

Congrats!. Though a BlackJack is not what what I'd compare the Droid too. The Touch Pro 2 is much stiffer competition. Love mine.

My growing concern for the last 3-4 days has been the slider. I'm already seeing a deterioration in the mechanism. I'll reach in my pocket and it's 1/4 to 1/2 way open. This happens maybe twice a day currently for the last few days.
What really starts to concern me is that just slight opening of the slider and the screen comes on. Maybe I need to consider a good belt clip, but I hate that. I am definitely a pocket kinda guy.

Well, the BJ was my current phone, so you can see why I like the Droid so much :p

I'm a pocket guy too, so I hope I don't start seeing this happen. There is no way I could live with myself wearing a phone "holster"....or an earpiece for that matter....

Oh god, the Nesoid app has been updated for the Droid. I've lost so much productivity at work in the crapper with the WinMo version...
For 3 bucks it doesn't get any better than this shit! Any old-heads like me, this is a fucking must for the Droid!

You know what though, we're all so very different. What works for some, doesn't for others. The best advice I could ever possibly give would be to try one out yourself. Judging by your post, it looks like you've got one and have been made happy. Congrats!

Great point. It just makes me feel bad that others(like you) have been having issues. If you dont mind me asking, where-abouts are you located? east/west coast? deep south? I'm in PA, about an hour from Philly...maybe there is some conspiracy where the bad models got shipped to your area.
You aren't living in West Virginia, are you? :p

Haha. I'm in Phoenix, Arizona. I don't think it's a conspiracy, I just think I'm a bit more demanding and discerning than most. It's a blessing and a curse. :D

Yes, I am likeing my Imagio better (6.5) I use both phones (Droid / Imagio) but the touch flow is so elegant, I am spoiled

I took my first droid back since it was rebooting every few days. I have over 250 hours uptime on this new one so far.. and it's been great. Only complaint is that slacker radio can be quirky sometimes, but that's about it.

As long as I live in NYC, I will never bring myself to waste money on an iPhone. Call quality and 3G speed are so atrociously bad.. I don't know why people even bother to use it there, but I find it funny when I hear them bitching about it. Apple should really leave AT&T.

Sometimes I had issues with my Droid not connecting to Slacker as well. I'm wondering if this is a Droid issue, or if Slacker just needs to be updated.
Spoiler alert, I dumped the Droid for the Eris. I know it's slower, there's no physical keyboard, and it's not 2.0 (for now). In the end, I like the sleak form factor, Sense UI, and trackball. You heard me right, I really enjoy the trackball, I don't get it because I never had one prior to Android.
I went to BB Mobile, reset my droid, exchanged it, got my refund and left a happy man thanks to no re-stocking fee and instant rebates.

As long as you are happy with your phone that's all that matters. I love the Droid and glad I got it over the Eris. I really liked the size and shape of the Eris and that it has the track ball and physical call buttons. If the Droid had the physical call buttons and a few bug fixes/changes I think it would be the perfect phone.

I know, I think it's silly that I've been through as many phones as I have recently. I just need to settle down.

Picked up a moto droid on Saturday, so far its been great. I'm a long time moto flip phone user, so the size will be the hardest thing to get used to, and the keyboard.

how does the droid feel in your pocket? is it too big? is it uncomfortable when you sit down?

Feels like I have a beaver in my pocket, but it's not too bad. It does feel pretty heavy to be honest!

I haven't had much problem with the heft of it myself, but I'm a pretty tall guy. I tend to just put the phone right behind my wallet, and I don't really notice much of a difference from my old flip phone. Not uncomfortable at all.

Of course, I also tend to keep it out sitting next to me on my desk in class or at work than I did with my flip phone, just because I find myself checking things on it a lot more often.

I've had the Moto Droid for about a week and I love it. No problems at all. I don't feel much of a difference in my pocket between this and my Blackberry 8330, but I'm 6'4" 200lbs.

I tried the Eris out for a few days. I loved the size, trackball, and dedicated buttons. I just hated the battery life. I have my Droid set up with all the same settings and the battery easily lasts 3-4 times as long. And to me the speed difference in the two was pretty significant also.

it feels bigger for sure, but thats coming from a rzr 2, rzr, ve20, etc. its actually not as bad as i thought. i guess it depends on the jeans you wear. i just hope the signal strength is as good as my previous phones. will find out today when i head out into the woods.

Okay, I actually have come across one annoying bug with the Droid, in relation to email:

If the email client is in the process of refreshing, and the phone switches from 3G to WiFi, the email client just sits there with the spinning refresh logo, not retrieving any email. However, if I drop down to the folders view, the Inbox will say it has X new messages, even though going into the Inbox doesn't show them. The only way to fix it is to kill the email client and restart it, but then I don't get any notifications anymore. However, if I can somehow managed to get the email client to crash (which sometimes happens if I turn the WiFi off and back on when it's stuck on its spinning refresh loop), and relaunch it, notifications work fine, and it'll work until the next 3G -> WiFi switch.

The thing is, the Droid seems to really like switching off the WiFi when it goes idle, so when I turn the phone back on, it'll switch from 3G to WiFi- and often right in the middle of an email check, so this is happening pretty frequently. It's pretty annoying, but hopefully the December 11th update will fix it.

when you guys goto youtube.com in the browser, when you play videos on the site, do they open in the youtube app?

and when you goto sites that have embedded youtube videos, do they also open in the youtube app?

There is a setting to disable the WiFi/3G switching on idle. Try that.

I just got the phone today and it is pretty badass so far. Love how it called all my Google Contacts, Email, Calendar on the fly. Facebook integration is really nice as well!!! So far I have Pandora installed as a gadget and love it. So far I am really happy with this purchase.

Also, getting this phone marks me leaving the AT&T network and going to the kickass fast Verizon network. Good day so far!!!

Did Verizon cripple this phone like they crippled the Razor so you can't upload your own ringtones?

Nope. You just have to create the following folder tree on your SD card

Media -> Audio -> Ringtones

Put what you want into that folder, and it'll show up in the list when you're setting ringtones.

If it's anything like the G1 you can just DL ringdroid and make all your own ring tones with any mp3 on the device..

I have a Droid and a Touch. The Droid feels like a phone and fits better in the hand than the Touch. The screen resolution/sharpness quality.....there is no comparison.

I wanted a separate unit to store my music (and not run my Droid's battery to h*ll) and my 8 gig nano was getting overloaded.....hence the 32 gig Touch. Very impressed with the Touch though.....have loaded up with the apps and connect via wifi. Taking the phone out of the equation both are almost equally appealing to me for different reasons. But Verizon has been the best carrier for me by far.
