Droid

This was Motorola's comeback phone. I think they've blown their load for a while. Other phones will eventually start coming out with similar specs, but this is the King for the next few months.

for motorola probably this is it for awhile. As far as android goes, several better phones will be out by January.

These should be a Scholes Tablet on the way as well according to rumors. I think there is even mention of the Motorola Calgary, plastic Droid with MotoBlur.

Let's not cloud the fact that this is a great phone. It is an excellent starting point, others will improve, but still great.

Anyone else notice a quirk with the instant reply notifications? In gmail, it will pull up all my past reply email notis and the only working links is the first one. It doesn't always take me to the right spot either, in addition to the extra steps needed to get there.

But if u view gmail through the browser, only a single reply email with the proper link is there. Has anyone figured out a way around this?

Also, just got off the phone with sp tech support, they're recommending I go and get droid #2 swapped out. 3rd times a charm, yeah?

Wow, 3rd swap!?!?! That's crazy. Good luck, maybe just say I'll hold out for the Passion? I love my Droid but the thought of the Passion is tempting. When will we hear about this phone?

3rd one has a nice line of stuck pixels...

lmao, damn dude. I'd hate to have your luck with phones. Just go get a track phone or something, lol. You seem destined to not have a good droid or just not like it. :(

I think I'll hold out for a couple months to see what other Droid phones come out. The Moto is extremely tempting though. If I see someone flash me one out in public or somehow come across one again, I'll prolly cave and get it, lol.

And it is just phones too. I've a Samsung Netbook, went through a bunch of MP3 players recently...some of them I may not have liked, but none of them had defective or crazy issues like phones do.

I just think that the overall build quality of the modern smartphone, at least the ones I've used...sucks.

I went to the VZW store the other day and a nice lady and I looked through 10 of them. Half of them had a loose headphone port, 80% of them clicked like a Storm, 60% of them had loose battery covers. We found 2 out of 10 of these to be satisfactory. Of course, I picked the one someone juggled with. :(

Just the thought of returning yet another DROID makes me sick.

For those of you that may not believe my issues are common, here's a link to the HoFo problem thread. It's a reply by me w/ a sum up of all my issues. Each and every one validated by another, DIFFERENT user.

Oh, and just to rub it in...check out the screen behind polarized lens. Awesome Motorola, thanks a lot.

Wow... sounds like some serious quality control issues going on with Motorola. Engadget (or maybe it was BGR, can't remember) reported that a lot of Droids are being returned for external speaker problems. Kinda sucks to have a phone that doesn't ring...

Sounds like the batch that got sent to your area was part of an initial production run or something though... I can't imagine otherwise how so many of the devices are defective while the majority of the Droid community otherwise seems pretty happy.

sounds like the factory that makes the palm pre is making the droid.

Now this is one of your problems I can confirm. I keep my phone on the dimmest setting and is usually fine but today for the 1st time (its been cloudy since I got it) I noticed I can't see the screen at all with my sunglasses on the dimmest setting and it's still difficult with auto brightness on.

Here's the closest I'll get to having a Droid in the near future...

Haven't had any problems with mine, works well and seems built well. Bought one for my wife too now that I know she likes it. Hers works well too.

I feel lucky reading posts over at howardforums and realizing how lucky I am in comparison. So far this device is behaving well for the most part.

I just had an issue with betterkeyboard, but that is not the fault of the phone.

I'm actually referring to how it looks behind a polarized lens, not the dim factor. The screen becomes pink and hologram-ish, making it difficult to read and use gnav.

Yuck! You dirtied up your AwesomePhone!

Cause you're having no issues w/ the keyboard obviously. ;)

Jodiuh, are you gonna go and get a 4th droid or do you give up? I'm reply from my droid as well and I can't believe that you have experienced so many issues that sucks man, especially with issues such as the headphone jack and screen clicks, that's just unacceptable.

It is nearly impossible to have that many bad Droids. Jodiuh is either pulling our legs, his last name is Jobs, or he has very large fingers and is radoactive:D

Just got tethering working on my droid with PDANET from the market (free), and an HP laptop. 341KB down and 115KB up. Not bad. A bit spotty but I expect that with this type of wireless. No need to root, just the app does the trick.

That was betterkeyboard using the quick reply box.. it got a little funky. I don't use the hardware keyboard most of the time.

Usually don't have any trouble :)

Second attempt at using betterkeyboard in the quick reply box. Working better this time, my fingers are large, so I often hit the key right next to my intended target. The issue I had in that post you quoted was the display of characters in the reply box wasn't being updated correctly. I just reproduced the issue with betterkeyboard again in typing this post. When it happened, I switched the input method back to the stock android keyboard and was able to continue typing normally.

Better keyboard minimized itself after I completed the third sentence.. and the display zoomed out because betterkeyboard got dismissed, there was a lag in bringing it back up, which leads me to think that better keyboard crashed and needed to be restarted. The stock android soft keyboard doesn't have that problem..and I was able to complete the post by switching to the stock keyboard.

Are you the Verizon rep or a friend going after a laugh?

You have seen my video right? I'm not making this up. the autoscroll issue happens to me multiple times in every brosing session. Its more than possible, I assure u.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocoxDHg09tE

Does that look staged to you? Its happened on all 3 DROIDs.

I almost think they are giving you Droids that others have returned to have this type of luck. I personally would give up at this point, but if it's any hope. My Droid is doing really well. I just went all day yesterday on my charge and didn't have to charge until 4pm today.
Good luck man, whichever path you take from here.

Or just do what I did and switch to the iPhone. it works and works great. Best phone I've used so far. Jodiuh and I both went through multiple storms and tours so I hate to feel his pain with going through multiple droids now. Your local verizon store has to hate seeing you.

AT&T needs to make a commercial that has a bunch of crashing and ask is there a phone for that and just show Verizon's phones. hehe. Anyways, hope you get it resolved without having to switch over to the dark side Jodiuh.

From my understanding with talking to my verizon rep today, he wanted to know why I switched carriers to which I gave him the detailed list of issues I had with my storms and tours which he knew of, as well as my recent rash of billing problems with verizon which is what really turned me away from them and to AT&T. His response was that the latest smartphone offerings from verizon were plagued with numerous issues and he wasn't recommending any of them to county employees due to a variety of issues which were both software and hardware related depending on which phone you chose. He then had the audacity to ask me to come back and he would get me a free Samsung Rogue or EnV Touch which were the two phones he was recommending. I havent played with the droid at all and only knew one person who got one and he took his back, but it seems there are just as many problems with the Droid as there were with the Storms, or could this just be an anomaly for certain areas to have so many problems it seems?

Picked up my DROID this evening. Posting from it right now. No problems so far. The BB had a ton of them in stock.

I really, really wanna like this phone, but it's just not happening w/ all the issues I'm having. But, so far the build quality on these things pretty much rivals the BB's. Some of them click like a storm, others have crazy loose battery covers. 2 of mine have had headphone jacks that fall right out and my latest has a line of stuck pixels.

I'll probably go for one more, but wait a week for new stock. And yeah, if that one fails I'll have to decide if I wanna switch to ATT or just pick up an iPod touch and wait for another phone on VZW. As much as I hate this company, my Razr gets awesome signal strength everywhere I go and excels @ being a "phone" phone.

Yeah, I'm starting to think either A.) you have amazingly, amazingly bad luck with phones, or B.) your body emits some sort of electromagnetic signal that causes cell phones to go all wonky and stop working. A week and a half in, and the only problems I've still had with the Droid, are the already-mentioned software based ones (including that scroll-to-bottom, which is rare, and I'm beginning to be fairly certain is an issue with the touch-recognition seeing a brief touch as a flick instead- it pretty much never does it if I press and hold for a brief moment). Well, that, and twice now, the screen has refused to turn back on, and I've had to pop the battery out and back in, and power it back on. But that seems pretty damned rare, too, and probably software related.

Ouch, man. As much as I like this phone, I'd probably have given up with all of the problems you've been having. I'm sure it is quite frustrating.

Some of my co-workers are now interested in this phone. Hopefully they don't run into the same kinds of trouble you have.

I'd feel bad if they did. The software is definitely finicky at times and it sounds like there are some hardware issues. I expected some problems, seeing as this is the first 2.0 device. Hopefully an update will happen soon to fix the little niggles I have with the OS.

I'm trying to make this a long enough post to trigger the keyboard problem after reinstalling at the developer's recommendation. I was able to provide them with a log of the failure. That is one of the things that I love about android. There are so many applications with unrestricted access to do things like log collection. It is very helpful.

It happened again, this time near the end of the post. At least it took longer that time and they keyboard came back more quickly. I was able to switch input methods and go back without leaving the browser. Ill just wait for a firmware update and hope that resolves it.

Jodiuh, I've been spending a lot of time on various droid forums and have never run across anyone with problems that are even remotely on your scale.

I'd say just get another phone - even if you get a good one it would be hard to trust it after all of your troubles. The next wave of android phones will be out within a few months.

Waiting for a new batch of droids might not fix anything either - there does not appear to be a correlation between build dates and problems.

Also, just wanted to mention that it appears that verizon or moto slipped a silent OTA update out last night. Almost everyone is reporting that their cameras are focusing like champs this morning - mine included.

I wonder if there were any other fixes?

edit -

Even though the firmware version didn't change.. a lot of places are reporting that autofocus works now..

It has to be something wrong with your wifi wherever you're posting from. Try doing the same thing on 3g and it will probably work.

Just remember that the Verizon rep is a salesman, first and foremost. Certain phones (as Jacuzz1 told us earlier) like the DROID have very low sales profits compared to other phones. It's how Verizon is staying competitive with the lower costs on AT&T smartphones (ie, iPhone). They'll probably make more money selling you another phone.

I'd take the rep's advice with a grain of salt.

Haha, I AM DOCTOR MANHATTAN!!

But seriously, this happens on multiple waps and 3G, and it happens every browsing session. I'm having a sf tech conf motodude in today, so that should be interesting. Hopefully ill get some solid answers.

Also, weird about the phone not showing an updated anything for the camera fix. Id love to get a couple more of those. :)

Engadget said:
Dan Morrill, from Google's Android team, has confirmed that there's a date-related bug in the Droid's camera software that leads to it having cycles of good and bad focus that depend on the date. Our own testing confirmed this, as backdating to the 11th of November returned those red bars of failure. Apparently, the cycles last 24.5 days, meaning that you'll have good focus all the way to December 11, when the real fix is expected to drop. So breathe easy, Gotham, there are no phantom updates, just an oddly date-sentient camera.

I think my head just exploded
