Droid

...holster gadget thing...
Die belt clip! Those never work for me. I always end up sitting my car funny or corning some stairs too close and watching the rail take out my phone. That and I just feel silly w/ it on. Like a weak sauce Batman.

Ordered the DROID. No way I'm gonna pass up on 2x the resolution w/ that super fine pixel pitch. I do a lot of reading the web on a smartphone and the extra .5 inches makes a massive difference.

I went to Best Buy with the intent on purchasing the Droid, but the keypad was way too small and I didn't like the feel. The phone itself also felt a little cheap.

I think I'll wait for the next Curve to come out or maybe pick up an Eris.

Really? Can't buy that it felt cheap, imo. Feels 10x more solid than the verizon curve. Also, the Eris is running like Android 1.6 or something. Why was money+time on older software?

Yeah I'm wondering if I should just hold off or maybe go play with te Droid some more.

I think I'm going to take my Droid back sometime this week. The phone isn't bad but since it's the only android 2.0 device, there are a few minor issues that need to be worked out. I'm very curious about the HTC Passion that Verizon is supposed to get very soon.

I am also curious about the Passion now. Also, just found out my GF bought me a VZW gift card for our anniversary...

Been playing with it for about an hour, not impressed. Tghe keyboard sucks, it stays warm all the time, doesn't dikspaly my emails right, and thers just. Keyboard I hate u! Its useless.

Also zooming sucks in browsder

Absolutely, he must not of been holding a Droid. The Droid is the best feeling phone (for one its made of metal) I've felt/had since my old Motorola bag phone from the 90s.

Ya my coworker took his back at lunch. He had a few gripes about it, a couple of which were the keyboard, call quality, and when compared to my 3gs was pretty slow.

He is back on his curve and loving it.

Interesting. Considering the call quality has been rated fairly high. Oh well. Can't please everyone. However I think the consensus on the moto droid is a very positive start with android 2.0.

What's wrong with the zoom? I checked my friend's droid out this weekend, and the double tap to zoom worked just fine.

seriously cant decide if i want to pick one up now or wait a little while longer for the htc hd2. :|

I just think it is verizon's coverage in our area to be honest. It is hit and miss with certain phones. I had a storm that was awesome, but some of the storms, the tours, the TP2, and some goofy samsung I had was back when were all pretty crappy on quality.

Call quality is fine here. Its gthe odd and seemingly random behavior my phone has that drives me nuts.

What kind of random behavior?

I've heard of some folks having random resets and freezes.. but I've yet to experience any trouble like that.

Unresponsive s@creen, scrolling to tbhe bottom of a page when clicking in this box, page cannot be displayed, have to scro?ll up before I can scroll down, applications crashing, nois for emial sometime sometimes nothing. There ikt goes again. I hit post reply and it sc@rolled to the bottom. Also check out my awesome keyboard errors.

Weird. I'm not having those kinds of issues. The screen has been very responsive for me, and auto-correct has fixed most of my typing mistakes.

The keyboard isn't perfect, but betterkeyboard on the market is a big improvement over the stock virtual keyboard.

I typed this post on the droid. Not fully used to the keyboard yet, but I'm getting there.

Yeah, I get nowhere near the number of errors that you do when typing, and I've got big fingers. Hell, I've typed multiparagraph emails before on it with only a couple errors and not much correction necessary.

The only app I have crash is Loopt, and that's mainly when my phone switches between WiFi and 3g frequency (which can happen often, since my campus has a LOT of WiFi APs and it seems like there's some issues keeping up with switching between them).

I have had the "sudden scroll to the bottom" thing, but it's rare and seems mainly to happen when my other hand (the one not doing the scrolling) is a bit too close to the screen and probably registers as some sort of touch. Either that, or it has to do with your finger size (which might explain your keyboard problems, too). Never had the scroll-up-before-scrolling-down issue, either.

Jodiuh
You are not alone in the issue with "scrolling to the bottom" when touching say a link or menu option. I have this happen in the Web Browser, Android Market, and Android Settings menu. I think this is more than just an app, and that refinement needs to happen with the touchscreen.

iii justilost another posting # again. Trying to hit caps lock and instead of making letter s big it throws anything I type into a search box. The start of thispost lagged so bad I hit I 3x. Thiks phone is broke. :-( OMG down scrolls again! 3xß

Scrolling up and down in a web page is a joke. It registers my swipe 1 out of 3 times. The damn thikng even shipped with a large ding as if someone dropped it.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and say that you got shipped a dud. I typed this entire post from my phone and I didn't have anywhere near the issues you are having. It scrolls perfectly, I haven't had a single typo yet, and no swipe issues. I have found that swiping right along the edge of the page is a lot better for casual browsing and reading. But all my swipes do register pretty much every time. And as for the occasional scrolls-to-the-bottom issue, pressing and holding for a send seems to work a bit to alleviate that.

You should try getting it replaced at a Verizon store or something and see if a new one works any better.

I went over to my local Verizon store to check out the Droid and was immediately warned to stay away from the Droid by the girl that’s always helped me. I went around to the other agents in the store and asked them about the phone and one guy said he simply is refusing to sell them.

They say that they’ve had nothing but trouble with the phones and are steering people toward better options like BlackBerrys, HTC, etc. At the moment they said every Droid they have sold has been returned or exchanged for a BlackBerry for one reason or another.

It was a total buzz kill and I have faith in my agent who has done me no harm in my phone selection over the years. They all thought that after a second revision or the phone or something it has the potential to be a really nice device but being so new and the problems they’ve had with it, they were recommending people to stay away.

:(

That's a little odd. Honestly I think I've found that I like Android more than the Droid itself. This was my first Android phone and compared to the iPhone OS, it was like a breath of fresh air. There are some kinks in it but in general I liked everything about it.

The phone on the other hand, is probably going back after about a week of use. It's not bad and I really didn't have any issues with the keyboard other than I don't really want a physical one. The onscreen keyboard needs work as well but I didn't have too many problems other than the fact it's not as responsive as the iPhone's.

I'm a little sad I have to take this phone back because I really do like Android 2.0. We're finally starting to get some good Android hardware and I can easily say I'll be dumping the iPhone for an Android one once the hardware catches up.

That sounds a little suspect.. every new phone has some issues.. I haven't had a single significant problem with my phone, though. Maybe the people who are doing all of those returns just don't like android.

Maybe I got lucky in that I have a phone that doesn't reboot itself or freeze on me.

You don't happen to have the privacy screen protector on your Droid do you?
Nope.

That would be my suggestkion. I'm at least 2 to 3 times faster on the iphones keyboard with no mistakes.

I've also come acrlss what looks likke a deal breaker. The backlight does not dim enough for my wyes ikn the dark. Its unusable. The iphone allows the screen to go much darker and I never had troluble with it.

I'm not sure I wanna leave verizon tho. :-(

Haven't had any issues with mine yet. After visiting droid forums around the net I haven't seen any indications of major hardware issues. The biggest issues so far are the camera (software update coming on Dec 11) and weak exchange support. Out of the 100,000 or so droid that are out there, there are actually very few reports of problems.

Also, regarding the screen dimming - you can go into the settings, disable Auto dimming, and set your own brightness level.

Right, still not dim enogh. I dint see how any of u considrer thiks keyboard anything but a failure of massive proportions. Stupid phone.

You have to understand something very basic. Not everyone is going to have the same experiences. People like different things. It's clear this phone is a success and a good step forward for Android and Verizon. Just because you don't like it and are experiencing things not many others are, doesn't mean you have to keep it and continue to complain.

Yes, I have one, and I think it's great, except for the camera, that's the only issue, which as stated is supposed to be fixed via software, dec 11th. I don't use the camera on my phone much as it is, so it's not a big deal. Plus coming from a BB curve, it's about the same.

Anyways, I think the keyboard is great, the software one, I actually prefer to the iphone, GAAASSSSPPPPP, yes there's a blogger at engadget that feels the same if you think I'm crazy, and the hardware keyboard is good, not as good as a BB, but hey what is.

As for the screen not being dim enough, I don't have that issue either, and I live in a basement.

I don't get why this guy still has the phone, he obviously hates everything about it, if I were that dissatisfied, I would have taken it back long ago. That's why they have the 30 day return policy.

Actually the more I use it the more it grows on me personally. I'm almost a week in and am getting used to the keyboard pretty well. That doesn't mean that you will. If your not happy return it, wait for the Passion or HD2 potentially.
I know my if statement said that I would take the Passion over the Droid, but lately I'm wondering. Having the keyboard is growning on me and I like the camera. Once it gets focus it's really good for a camera phone. The video is just phenomenal, simply put. However, just because I like a phone doesn't mean that you will.
Hmmm...Sense UI is downright sexy though.
Here's my dream phone, why doesn't someone make this today? I'd pay $1000.00 off contract for it.
1GHz Snapdragon, physical keyboard like TP2, 512mb ram, 32GB storage, expandable storage up to 32GB microSD, 4" capacitive multitouch enabled touch screen, 4g, 3g, 2g data capabilities, Wifi, 12mp DSLR size sensor with vibration reduction, HD video recording (1080p), 6 hours of talk time, a trackball, a great speaker phone, and with root access.

haha, that phone would be a BEAST. Friggin huge I'd imagine. Give it time my friend.

This is exactly what I did today. I took the Droid back to Best Buy and one of the guys there was like "Already?". I had a chance to play with the Eris today and while it's underpowered, the phone just felt way more natural than the Droid did to me and Sense UI is pretty good too. I have no regrets in waiting for HTC's Android 2.0 phone -- with specs similar to the Droid minus the physical keyboard. I like the Droid's keyboard but I like not having a keyboard more.

I would like it to work. I would like to get used to the keyboard. But I'm not being given much chance. Let me run down a list for you:

1. Keyboard lags like a mofo, all 3 of them.
2. Device gets super hot.
3. Screen becomes unresponsive when browsing, cannot slide down.
4. Links won't click, they scroll the screen all the way to the bottom, lol.
5. Phone and browser apps crash.
6. If I plug my headphone into the device it falls right out. It's like I'm plugging a 1/8th into a 3.5mm.
7. Drops calls like a champion.
8. Battery dies in 6 hrs.
9. Standing directly over my WAP, I have 1 signal bar. I believe this could be the reason 50% of my browsing sessions end up in page cannot be displayed.

I'm sure I'm leaving off a couple things, but you get the picture. This thing was clearly kicked like a football. :D I had to activate my razr just to process the return. Speaking of the return, they want me to pay $559.99 full retail for the device and when they receive my old phone the credit GOES ON MY VERIZON ACCOUNT. I've been on hold for 10 minutes waiting for a smartphone tech sup...

I don't get why this guy still has the phone, he obviously hates everything about it, if I were that dissatisfied, I would have taken it back long ago. That's why they have the 30 day return policy.
Reading the above, would you be happy w/ it? I'm even getting hassled trying to get a replacement device. I know that I can return it, but I have 2 buds w/ this device and they love their phone. I would just like a fair shot at trying a DROID that's not broke before making my decision.

Once it gets focus it's really good for a camera phone.
I live in Arizona. We have lots of sun. I've never seen green.
