DOOM3 rendering

Yea, I'd say that there is a fairly strong possibility it'll be OpenGL,

Considering that's all Carmack has programmed in since quakeGL.

Awesome.
6800GT it is then :)

HL2 looks a good (single player) game but I will be doing all my online gaming via DOOM3, so I really need those frames.

yeah i hear doom 3's online is pretty fun. im looking forward to both doom 3 + HL2's mp and sp. :D

well just so you know i have a 9800pro and have the alpha leak of doom3 which is not even optimized hardly and still at 1152x864 get well over 30fps. im sure either the new nvidia cards and the new ati cards will run the game adequate.

I'm an FPS whore. Nothing less than 100fps on a 16 player server will suffice :p

Both should run great. A lot of things are yet to be known on which will do better on what game. Rumor has it that Ati is rewriting its opengl driver to get some comparable performance. So, we'll see soon enough!

From what I have seen doom3 is supposed to be capped at 60fps, has this changed?

This was posted at www.ign.com:

October 22, 2003 - At a recent NVIDIA Editors' Day, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead announced that DOOM 3 will be capped to 60 frames per second in the rendering engine.

We checked with John Carmack himself about why DOOM 3 will be hard-capped at 60fps in the renderer, and he had this to say:

"The game tic simulation, including player movement, runs at 60hz, so if it rendered any faster, it would just be rendering identical frames. A fixed tic rate removes issues like Quake 3 had, where some jumps could only be made at certain framerates. In Doom, the same player inputs will produce the same motions, no matter what the framerate is."

oh god he's fixing the tick rate at 60fps for the in-game communication AND it is p2p?

1 person w/ a shit machine will KILL a session 'cause they'll stutter and have to drop tic's.. . .. .and everyone else will be held back to stay with them.

I hope carmack is even smarter than I think he is if he's going to pull this off w/o making multiplayer SERIOUSLY retarded

wait until the game is out until you start knocking the god we call John Carmack ;)
lol

Will it be OpenGL or DirectX?

I Googled it and I can't seem to find an 'official' answer. It seems that the consensus is OpenGL though. I found that suprising since they're doing an XBox version too.

isnt the x-box version being done by a different company of some sort? or am i thinking of the multiplayer.

Hehe..call me crazy...but I'm pretty darn sure he knows exactly what's he''s doing. :D

You know fine well it is going to work (and probably better than anything else) that and it is openGL read the .plan things carmack wrote he talks about implementing effects in openGL and why he prefers it to directX and if you check the beta aswell it runs in openGL.

Do you have a link? I believe you, I just want to read his opinions on OpenGL.

err...
does 60Hz = 60fps? im confused.

60Hz is the refesh rate, 60fps is the frames per second. The refesh rate is the rate at which your videocard/monitor writes the even then odd lines of pixels on your display. Where has the framerate is the rate at which the video card renders a single frame of game or video, and what have you.

Thats right... right? ;)

i know frames per second and refresh rate. im just asking since doom3 is locked or capped at 60Hz, does that mean is it capped at 60fps? (if not then that means he could probally get 100fps or w/e, right?) thx for the reply tho :)

Yeah it is capped at 60 which mean it can run slower but never faster. Maybe it is just to stop the bugs like quake 3 when the bigger faster cards come out?

It's not capped at 60Hz, it's capped at 60fps. Therefore the most fps you can get on Doom3 is 60fps. So it will be interesting to compare video cards with this game because if the 6800Ultra gets 90fps @ 16x12 and the X800 XT can only get 65 @ 16x12, they will both be equal because the fps is capped at 60. ATi doesn't have to be better at Doom3 than Nvidia, just close.

Yes, but the thing is that Nvidia will probably be able to get the 60 (or close to it) @ 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF. I cannot imagine ATI's card being able to handle it at that resolution (too much shadow computation). Hopefully I am wrong.

Anywho, I thought that Carmack stated that Doom3 should only be played on a LAN and would only support like 4-8 people.

im just wondering ...no need to get nervous :p

Yeah in QuakeIII, you can do some krazy shyte at 250+ FPS. In QuakeII, you can do similar things at about 20FPS. Faster removes your superpowers, though. No idea why.

im pretty sure reviewers will find a way to unlock this 60fps limit for benchmarking.

Doom 3 is capped at 60 fps in the engine, this was done to prevent problems like that which is in quake3, (more fps made you a little faster, which i dont really think is a big deal) but anyway that doesnt mean your fps will stop at 60, just everything past 60 is the same frame being drawn again, assuming you can get 60 fps to begin with.

Yes it is OpenGL

60Hz = 60FPS, sometimes us old school people refer to FPS in Hz cause thats how it use to be long long ago when only VSYNC was enabled, there never use to be an option to disable VSYNC back in the old school days

60Hz is effectively 60FPS.
If you're running @ 125FPS in game yet with only a display refresh of 60Hz, notice how poor it looks (and how much of a headache you get)?

Anyway, I hope the engine isn't capped at 60FPS, that is gonna be annoying. My eyes (and aim) are accustomed to 85+

Isn't Doom3 4-player max? I seem to remember something about how it's a different style of multiplayer than normal.

or not

why do you need more than 60FPS honestly? give me a good reason

this game will definitely be interesting for reviewers to say the least, one thing is for sure though, our method of reviewing will be strengthened with this game

You can jump higher and further @ 125FPS. 333FPS is another, for insane strafing :)

Ive heard that multiplayer will consist of a lobby type area where you can create games, the game will use a player-2-player system (you connect to every player in the server, and they to you) the game will run as fast as the slowest connection, and I generally dont like the idea.

But hey thats what mods are for, i believe carmack said himself that he knows someone will create a 8 player mod the day the sdk ships. who knows about the outlook of a typical client-server setup though, but it all depends whats availiable in the games vm.

But thats just on what I think I remember and what I think I heard. (speculation)

You can use GameSpy, or All-Seeing-Eye, or a website to find & join servers. The initial release of Doom III will support up to 4 players multiplayer, but I would expect mods to come up the next day allowing to go up to 64 players in client/server.

i thought the 4 man multiplayer limit was just effective at the time of quakecon 2003? i wouldnt be surprized if we get a choice of more than 4 players in mp in the final version.

im saying for benchmarking. if both cards do higher than 60 fps, some would still like to know which card is faster.

isn't it more important to know the minimum fps?

especially when you wanna crank up the res/aa and af, you wanna know which card will provide the highest image quality settings without dropping frames to low right?

and which card provides the most consistant framerates

You could always make the settings so insane that they won't get more than 60FPS ;)

cant argue with you there. but i still would like to know the max, average, and the min.

it should all be included in the "package" of benchmarking

tell me how the max fps is important? especially over say 60fps
