I OC'd my box and it runs fine in everything but Doom3. It makes my temps jump more than any other program (even prime95). I heard that carmak said something like the game wouldn't run right on OC'd hardware. What do you guys know about this. I got the newest beta ATI cats to tweak speed and I will try them tonight.

My system runs smooth with Doom3, as long as the video isnt overclocked. If I OC my card one single mhz, I get artifacts after 15min or so of gameplay. :( My cpu temps stay within normal bounderies without a single crash. :D

I've been playing the game for a total of 3 hours on an overclocked BFG 6800 GT. I 've got it set at 420/1100 and haven't had any problem with artifacts or crashes. My CPU isn't overclocked at this time, however.

If a program pushes your hardware more over the edge then obviously u can't be as oced. Just because ur oced doesn't mean everybodys will the same. Overclock limits change on every PC and thus the "edge" that is pushed over is different. Plus ur running a mobile 2500 @ 2.5ghz which i know is stable usually but i might look into that too. How far is the video card oced over stock? My mobile ran at 2600/2500 but at like 1.85 volts so it was USUALLY stable but not always so i dropped the voltage a bit so the temps came down and the mhz down a bit too. *points to sig*. My video card had to be dropped to but that was months ago as well. Haven't tried d3 yet but i think it'll be fine since i'm very picky about stability and notice little details especially since this setup was tweaked for about the 1st month that i changed the cpu! =D

If I have my processor overclocked at all, Doom 3 will crash in about 5 minutes, but overclocking my GT doesn't seem to make any difference.

I have my 3200+ oced to 2.33ghz, 220 fsb.

My Doom3 runs fine.

Not much of an overclock... but its as far as I can push mine. =)

It's simple folks... its just stressing it harder and parts that haven't been pushed hard before. You just never noticed your chips abilities were compromised in some ways by your clocks before and now you are getting anomalies. You just found a new stress test... thats all. You've overclocked too far... nothing new. Carmack was saying this realizing you may have not had the problem before. My fsb is overclocked, cpu, Video card, everything and it doesnt effect me at all. Not all the 2.6GHz AMD chips in the world sold for $70 have absolutely nothing wrong with them @ 2.6GHz.

The speed your chips are set at are not in it's DNA whereby it just feels awkward, it just can't hang at the speeds.Your problems are your chips are making mistakes... miscalculations. You have to lower it or buy a new one. Sorry but there is no asking it to play nice and you'll give it a cookie. the makers of the game warned you and it turned out to be the truth. Whodathunkit!

I'm guessing it's acting screwy, and your temps are higher because prime95 only stress the CPU. Doom 3 however, stress your entire system.??

maybe that's what's doing it in?? this sucks.. i hope my hardware can hang.. all my hardware is gonna be OCed .. though i'm gonna get doom 3 when it gets cheaper. cuase i'm a cheap ass... so it's far cry for me first...

Could it be vsync problems and not O/C?

According to this article:

http://www.techreport.com/onearticle.x/7133

"Turn on vertical refresh sync — When you get into the game, the first thing you're going to want to do is enable vertical refresh sync, or vsync. Without vsync enabled (and it's disabled by default) you'll see lots of tearing (a sort of screen fragmentation) in DOOM 3."

I assume you only get it during O/C but, just a thought.

Already thought of that. The strange thing is that my 80mhz core and 50mhz ram overclock gives absolutely no performance gain in Doom3. Guess I need to upgrade soon. :(

I'm gonna be pissed if I can't run doom3 @ 4ghz on the cpu and 470mhz core on the ultra (I'm getting the one thats 470mhz stock, its pre-overclocked from BFG...I better not have to underclock the card....)

You'll be good. Manufacturers dont put there ass on the line like that. I think anand actually said they had a problem with there's  but could be anything... now it wont run GT speeds!? Strange. I want to stress here that Im using the my 9700 overclocked by 100MHz and am not having overclocking issues... just wanting a new card. :D

Tearing happens from lack of vsync and doesn't matter if ur OCed or not. If you really want to go into it then OCing will actually reduce the tearing because the video card is keeping up with the load more so it tears alittle less.

OC is not OC. Just because one guy had problems OCed doesn't mean everybody will. Theres levels of OC as i explained. Its like saying turboing a car will kill ur car because it happend to some other person. No. Alot of variations make up a OC. If a video card is OC from the factory then it should have been throughly tested and it should be fine.

I run doom3 on a 2ghz axp mobile @ 2.5ghz and a radeon 9800 pro at 465/365

No artifacts, no crashes, just smooth sailing.

playing it on 11xx / 8xx high quality with no problems at all except shiting my pants every once in awhile :D

It's not that Doom 3 won't run on OC'ed hardware. It's more the fact that most people don't properly test their OC before posting a CPU-Z screenshot on a forum claiming to be the king of overclocking.

doom2 was running great on my system at 1024x768 with high details. only my cpu was overclocked, im going to try running it with my video card maxed out next.

Id hope so!

Im personally not going to buy it unless prices drop alot.. quick.

i was getting worried because it seems as though everyone is ditching the 9800's and going with 6800's saying that the 9800 will run it like shit.

I think that depends on what your personal definition of shit is. I know I absolutley can't stand running at resolutions below 1280x1024...even if I can put on AA of AF at lower resolutions. The image just looks to grainy for me. If you wanna run doom 3 @ 1024x768 medium details, a 9800 pro is fine. I wouldn't be able to do it though. Thats why I vmod every piece of hardware I touch :p

Boulderdash. I was doing various tests to see how I coudl do on certain settings. I used fraps to get average FPS. Wiht the Game on Ultra settings and res on 800x600. I got an averga fps of 27, high of 42, and low of 0 (got swamped with heads). Then I tried 1024x768 on High, just about the same results. High on 800x600 got me much better results. I got an averga of 41.6, high if 67, and low of 32. Taking it down to medium at 1024x768 the game ran about the same speed, but dipped under 30fps more. Then I tried medium at 800x600 adn 4x/8x aa/af and not only did it really hurt the fps, it looked worse at low res with them on. My system:

2600+
AN-7
MSI 9800Pro R360
1GB Hyperx PC3200

as you can see, a 9800Pro wont give you max settings, but there is room for you to choose betweeen quality settings and resoultion. I foudn the game most enjoyable at medium @ 1024x768. The difference between meduim and high is hard to notice, but the difference in the two resolutions do alot. 1024x768 at medium like i said averaged about 40, high was in the 60's, and low was just under 30, which it dipped below only when enemy activity got really high. Fear not, your 9800Pro will chug through the game nicly.

If anyone cares, I play 1024x768 on high with perfectly playable framerates on a decently overclocked 9800 pro (465/365)

Carmack was referring to overclocked vid cards with his statement. What was said, was that Doom3 will use parts of GPUs that were either never used before or were barely used. These parts did not affect your overclock before because they were not used. In Doom3 they are being used or just used more and those parts cannot handle the speed. Therefore, your previous stable overclock is no longer stable. You have to drop it to get stability. In most cases, that is what is going on right now.

*thanks ATI tool for giving me a stable OC*

I left it where it stopped, and doom3 ran great!

I have been playing doom 3 for 5 days now and I have had my processor and video card overclocked a LOT. My processor is currently running at 2.6ghz and my video card is running at 441/348 and I havent had one single problem. Other than when I was playing around with my OCs and got an unstable one and doom 3 crashed. Other than that I havent had any problems.

doom3 runs fine no crashes on my processor overclock from 2.0 gig to 2.5 gig, however i don't have my 9800 overclocked

My video card is not OC'd. It just wont take it at all. My CPU has been stable forever at this speed and it is only this program that gives me trouble. Also, I have not isolated the problem to the CPU. It may very well be the video card or just buggy software (drivers).

THANK YOU! That is exactly what I was wanting to find out. However, my Video card is running at stock speeds so I guess I will need to keep fishing for the problem. I am going to do driver updates tonight.

Doesnt matter if you've never had problems. I do the same.... go stubborn for a bit and figure "Always worked before" *shrug. Then I try a little less OC, if there are still problems its ludicrous to not try stock. Not until you try stock can you say... Oh... drivers... this buggy game sucks... whatever. I had a lot of problems with painkiller and until I tried stock and still had all my problems.... then I declared the game unfriendly with my hardware. Put my OC back.... then had to save a lot and now later levels have stopped killing me.

I see this a lot.... This game crashes and it's not my OC.. um did you try stock?.... no what's that.... you know defaults.... oh not really.... try it.... stubornness*5-> but but prime works.....just do it....Ok it works.... it is your OC.

Chill man. I already tried stock. Sounds like doom3 has you a little tense.

Running Doom3 on the oc in my sig and not having any probs .... however, what carmack said about vid cards is true just be warry of how far u push in doom3

Playing Doom 3 on the computer below in the signature...no crashes, no artifacts etc. without a VGA cooler...

I have everything overclocked, cpu, ram , and my vid card. Doom 3 runs fine... This will only be a problem if your computer wasn't fully stable after the OC. Meaning you didn't stress test it enough.

Untrue. I stress tested the shit out of my 9800Pro @ 420/360 and never had a single artifact after long loops of 3DMark and long gaming sessions. After playing D3 for 3+ hours they started to show up. As Carmack said, D3 pushes your GPU more than anything that has come out prior to its release.

Right... Is heat collecting in your case in these three hours? If it takes three hours then it's definately heat.

i ahve no probs with speeds in sig... i have soo much case cooling that in silent mode it doesnt go up significantly.. on high mode.. lol.. not more then one or two degrees C
video card gets toasty tho.. need to get a zm80d-hp and then overclock it til it crys

TrueKaio said:

I didn't say anything about it not being heat. Heat did cause it, that is obvious. Doom 3 just works the card more than anything I have used in the past - causing more heat.

I have my CPU and my graphics card both substantially overclocked and Doom3 gives me no probelms. As long as your system cooling is good enough to keep your system stable then you have nothing to worry about. There is a technical aspect on why Doom3 may have problems with a overclocked videocard though - the game uses alot of "firsts" in terms of onboard technology, some that don't handle the stress well.

Overclocks:
AMD 2500+ OC'd to a 3200+
FX5600-Ultra OC'd to 490/820

Doom3 setting:
800x600 at medium
