DOOM: The Dark Ages

So are people saying Dark Ages isn't selling well, or just doing ok?

Small sample size, my 2 kids; My son is a freshman in high school, and my daughter a junior in high school, I raised them to be PC gamers no consoles in our house, they both have their own custom built PCs I made for each of them.

My son loves War Thunder and Battlefield games the most, and plays a little Fortnite. I asked if he wanted me to buy him Dark Ages? he said nah but thanks Dad, only recent Doom game he liked was Doom 2016, as Eternal was too hard for him, and wasn't into it, and Dark Ages he has zero itnerest in.

My daughter is an RPG girl, she plays real pen and paper D&D, she loves BG3, and plays World of Warcraft super casually, maybe one day a week, other games she plays Jedi Fallen Order, and Fallout 4. I asked her if she wanted Doom Dark Ages, she said nope not my thing.

I asked both of them are any of your friends or cousins talking about the new Doom game whatsoever, like any buzz in your circles about this game? They both immediately said NO, there's zero talk about it, barely anyone even knows about it, per both high school groups they're in. And both my kids are into games, and know about this stuff, and they tell me Doom is nonexistent for the teenager group.

Marketing could definitely be a problem here. Assassin's Creed Shadows had a huge marketing budget. I saw stuff about it and merchandising tie-ins for the game whether I wanted to or not. Doom was really only covered by a few gaming YouTubers and people on this forum who were keeping up with it. To be clear, I don't think that Doom The Dark Ages is suffering from a pure failure of the marketing team. As I said, I think a lot of things are working against it. Its a shame because I think id, Bethesda and the industry as a whole are probably going to learn the wrong lessons from the game's commercial failure.

Doom 2016 was a day one purchase for me. Doom Eternal was too but after playing it, I didn't care for it at all. Therefore, I was on the fence about Dark Ages until I watched some game play and learned that a lot of what I hated about Doom Eternal was changed in this one. I've enjoyed it well enough but I'm not blown away by it or anything. I don't think its better than 2016 or anything. I think its loads better than the pinched loaf that was Doom Eternal but that's a pretty low bar.

I don't think marketing is the problem. Twitch has been plastered with Doom ads. I saw nothing but Doom ads last week.

If you see an ad that isn't interesting to you you just tune it out and completely forget about it. People just aren't interested in this type of game.

Marketing is just the spark and word of mouth does the rest.

I think DOOM's core audience is a bit skittish after Eternal, and in a wait-and-see mode. Probably a bit of DOOM overload as well. Should have started working on a Quake rework/make after 2016.

Are single player sci-fi / fantasy shooters just not popular today? Is modern day Doom games just a niche audience for the 40+ year old PC gamer only crowd?

Because it is interesting both my teenage kids are super PC gamers, and the Doom game franchise has ZERO presence to them. Last week I asked them to ask or text their Discord groups to ask about Dark Ages, they did, and both said most haven't even heard about the game, and if they did, had no interest.

Personally I'm totally ready for a Quake reboot with Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails doing the sound track, I thought we would have gotten a new Quake game by now, before a third new Doom game.

it's a combination of a bunch of different things but I do think they messed up the marketing...they should have marketed this a lot better...I think they took for granted with the success of Eternal that Dark Ages would just follow suit and be an easy win

I also think the dumbing down Eternal's gameplay and going back to the Doom (2016) style hurt...a vocal minority hated Eternal but the majority loved it based on sales figures and the fact that a lot of people consider it one of the best FPS games of all time...I also think the soundtrack minus Mick Gordon hurt along with the $70 price tag

Yeah $70 bucks for a game you can complete in a few weekends is kind of steep IMO

Same with my 3 sons. I have a 22, 20 and 16 year old and none of them have any interest in DOOM. Maybe it is us older people that still remember the originals and still have interest.

My 40 year old son who grew up playing with me on the original DOOMs and Quake games has it, but not installed yet. He has played all the DOOM tiles. He's currently involved in playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. My youngest daughter at 29 is a RPG player. Would not be interested in playing DOOM.

Problem is that new generation is a bunch of pussies and doesn’t like badassery. They would rather hug a tree and talk about plastics than kill demons from hell. Also this gen doesn’t believe in demons from hell. 👀

Jokes aside my problem with the game is music is not on all the time.

Eternal also launched at a time when there was a lot people stuck at home. I've been playing Dark Ages on and off and I'm loving it, but I can't dedicate as much time as I used to for gaming.

How "players" is measured on Game Pass, and why it's not a reliable metric for financial success or player activity.I ran this by an exec or two in the industry to verify how it works, so maybe we can finally put this to bed.Game Pass, another services like it, take in a monthly subscription fee as revenue. The revenue is then shared by the games on the platform. The primary measures include DAU (Daily Active Users) and time played.DAU is basically "how many people played your game today" and that counts as soon as you fire up the game, even if you never make it past the menu screen. Time Played is what it sounds like. How long did they play the game. Again, if you are just parked at the menu screen and go make a sandwich, that counts too. (it's the same on Steam, btw).So when you hear "1 million players", all you are really getting is that they downloaded the game and launched it. Even if they never played. You are also not told how long they played the game. That 1 Million number could have generated zero revenue. If you are not in the top of the heap for DAU and Time Played, you don't make money. In fact, most games on Game Pass (indie, etc.) never see money past the advance they were paid to be on the platform. This is why the "played" or "players" number is pretty much worthless as an indicator of financial success. 1 Million could be a lot, or nothing at all...all depending on if they launched the game past download, and if they played 1 minute or 5 hours. We've seen games like Avowed claim "5 million players" and be duds. And we will see some games claim 2 million players and be a success. Comes down to those 2 metric numbers.A single day blip in those numbers, like launch day or 1st week, could look very good, but if it falls to zero the next week, you can still claim "2 million" from the first week. It's meaningless without graphs, like Steam Charts. There is also a dark side to this number which I will save for another time. But I'm sure you can already guess.

I just bought a code to have it on steam to complete my collection. Even though I will never play it and finish it on game pass for the gamer score. lol.

I want to buy a code but I don't own a 50 series card...does anyone know if I can have the seller activate it for me if I give them my Nvidia account info (after temporarily changing the password)?...I bought multiple AMD bundle codes this way by giving out my AMD Rewards account info and having them activate the game into my account

but I hear with Nvidia it's more complicated where the hardware verification is more strict (I might have to give the seller my Steam account info/password which is a lot more risky)

I was able to activate. The process required me to login to nvidia app using vpn (US), then sending me to webpage to verify I have the right graphics card. Once that verification is complete, I was sent to steam website to login where then I got redeemed message. I am assuming the step 2 (steam) does not re-do hardware verification like all other verification systems I have used (and I have used all of them - AMD, Intel, nVidia etc.).

but you have a 50 series GPU...that makes things easy...my issue is that I don't have a 50 series

Yes you will need to ask the person to login to your nvidia account and redeem. Once done you can redeem to steam yourself.

so they only need my Nvidia account information?...it doesn't need to be activated with Steam at the same time (meaning with the 50 series GPU installed)?...I can do that later with my 3080 GPU after they have activated it?...I have an Nvidia account but I can't find a way to link it to my Steam account...I'm thinking it needs to be linked prior

You will be prompted to sign in at which time it will link.
Also I just realized that I will need to play the game on steam so that I can play expansions later (especially if they require you to finish the game). Fuck.

Just bought the game on Steam and installed it, but zero time to play until the weekend, and I want to tweak the settings first for my system; 9800X3D CPU, 4080 FE, 64GB DDR-5 6000mhz, and a 3440 X 1400 res OLED monitor.

You'll be alright, we have pretty comparable systems. It should run great for you even without using DLSS. The graphics settings on auto will be fine, and you could probably even tweak a few higher than auto and not even notice it.

In fact, waiting for the next update might even be a good idea. I saw some things on youtube mentioning that they are going to increase the difficulty a little (this is a good thing) but more importantly...enable some toggles for unwanted features. For example, the game intentionally slows down when you do a melee attack. It's cool the fist few times, but it gets really old and personally I think it interrupts the combat flow. Also they are going to be adding a toggle to disable the visual effect when you are using sprint. Most people just play with auto sprint turned on...I mean why would you want to move slower in an fps? so that visual effect being removed just makes sense.

Given into having to buy an 8 core to replace my 8700k 6 core to play this. Cheap aliexpress Ryzen 7700 since I want to replace it with a zen 6.

IMHO, the damn flying dragon has replaced Eternal's jumping. I don't know why it's so difficult for developers to just let you get on a creature and fly it around without all the bullshit training. I can't bypass it yet also can't activate a mode, dodge it and fire all at the same time! I don't understand why they force these restrictions on you instead of letting you just play it the way you want to. Glad I got this on GP as it's been a huge letdown! Also, I got a voucher for the Premium edition that I suppose I'll just end up selling.

First impressions not good, First off settings wouldn't stick it seems for keyboard controls, I always go with WSQE not the typical WSAD, and Q would still show that weapon switch HUD thing couldn't get rid of it.

And the graphics, the game looks blurry or like a filter over the screen, it's not crisp and sharp detailed, and I'm running at Ultra settings. This doesn't look any different than Eternal, and actually barely any better than Doom 2016.

Gameplay the shield is really interesting and just hard to wrap my brain around using it, but I will get used to it over time, but so far the running and shooting just feels generic. This game makes shooting your weapon almost secondary or the third option to kill enemies, they want you to use the shield first it seems to bash enemies, and then that E button to punch enemies, and then maybe shoot them. And I totally forgot about throwing the shield? So that's an option too? With the middle mouse scroll button? My brain isn't used to doing that, so just getting my mind to play in this new style will take some time to adjust. To me this doesn't feel like an Id made Doom game yet.

Of the 3 modern Doom games, to me Doom 2016 is easily the best and feels like DOOM

I knew you had good taste :giggle::LOL:

Slapped some more demons. On to chapter called Siege 1. Game is great but I am dying quite a lot now. There is some learning curve and when demons swarm you it can be a difficult time.

Enjoying it still.

Ok now after dialing in my keybind settings to my liking, and I updated my nVidia drivers and using DLSS now and getting more comfortable with the shield usage, this game is becoming very fun.
