Doom III: Project Mars City (Comments Thread)

I havent had much time to work on the Doom3 case because of commitments to client projects , but I have some previously unreleased pics that i will post in the next few days. ;)

Here is a couple shots of two power distribution boxes I made. These will be painted to match the interior of the case theme basicaly.

disto_boxes-(1).jpg

For this one, I made the front plate of the project box out of clear plexi. I then created a simple graphic in PhotoShop and printed it on a transparency. I then epoxied the graphic on the Plexiglas lid and gave the whole thing about 6 coats of clear acrylic spray paint. Two super bright (7000MCD) LED's were hooked up in parallel for interior lighting. You won't be able to actually see this lighted box unless the case is opened, but i wanted to have a little fun making it.:

Here I placed it in the case just to get a little darkness for the photo:

Damn nice!

I had an idea like that awhile back for hiding and powering some CCFL but never did anything with it, maybe I'll do it now. :)

I love checking out how other modders make disto boxes---some of them are just amazing, like the ones for Orac3 for instance--and even the more simple boxes. I'm just lucky when nothing starts to smoke or short out

LOL, for sure. :)

I can't recall but are there any plans do make your own modular PSU for it (40 pages, you can blame me for not going back to look :) )? Just asking since I was just over at Bit-Tech and saw their little Hiper's sneak peak thing and though that a PSU with connectors like that would look great for D3.

Thanks for that link!

That modular PSU looks pretty sweet--But it does all come down to what they offer for length on the cables as well as the quality of the components as well. Doom3 mod will def have some sort of modular PSU--whether its store bought or custom made :D

Your work never ceases to amaze me! That think looks like it was ripped out of the game. So awesome.

lol..thanks man--yah except for the silly Philips screws in the corners--hehehe--but I guess if it starts to bother me i can tap it out for better looking ones.

You magical bastard. That power distribution box is amazing, and it won't even be seen! It really does look like it was taken straight from the game.

You never cease to amaze.

Wow Crim. I just checked in to see if there were any updates and saw that steam generator and distribution box. Just when I think it can't get any better you blow me away time and time again. I hope you have time soon to work on it. Your updates are like opening Chrismas gifts.

That is such a nice thing to say--makes this big crazy project worth it!---thank you!..I'll have updates very soon--I've been squirreling away some for times like now when I get busy with the projects that pay the bills!

I've following your DOOM 3 very closely and is awesome and I've checking out your other projects since I found out about your website and is awesome. LIke somebody said everytime there is an update is like opening a Chistmas gift. I can't wait for more updates on the DOOM 3 case. I will stay tune!!!

Hey crim, when can we see a new update?

Also how come the modcams are always offline? Ive never once seems them online.

I am not really a big fan of DooM3 but I love the case and think you are....well the best modder

I could have never imagined the detail you're putting into this, great work like always.

I may have to reinstall doom 3just to see some of the stuff you're basing it off of.

It's becoming obvious that the single 120mm rad was not going to be enough cooling for the AMD FX55 and twin 6800 Ultras that will be used for this project--My roof section has now become a cooling tower. The Black Ice XtremeII Radiator should be a better solution for cooling--I may even look into Danger Den's heater core. The PSU will have to be pushed back and outside the case a few inches, but I'll make sure to do some model building and make it blend right back into the case.

Whoa Crimson, that was a really wierd picture. I was looking at it for a bit, trying to figure out what was so strange. Then I noticed the PCI slots on the inside of the case and remembered "Oh yeah! This started as a computer case!" Haha, its pretty funny that you have modded this thing to the point where the sight of PCI slots was an odd sight. :D

As far as the cooling tower goes, how much is it going to be built up above the current roof? Will there actually be an additional "tower" on top?

:D Yah---exactly--there is a pos LanBoy under all that hardwork!

Since that roof section is pretty deep, you will only see whatever vent I decide to create for the 120mm fans---it will be fairly flush or maybe about 3/8 inch above--I have some nice "finishing touch" ideas for the roof in mind.

I would go for BI Pro II instead.

With a thinner design it will give you better airflow when using weaker / less noisy fans.

seconded, also you could take the extra thinness of the BI Pro and create a smallish shroud for the fans to get them up off the radiator some to provide a bit more cooling as well....somehow I think you are going to make this cooling tower look like some sort of rooftop AC unit.

Will this be neatly covered and modded in?
Is there room fro a triple radiator?
f

I had to laugh when I read this....you DO know who you are talking to don't ya...CS doesn't do anything sloppy

indeed, but is there room for a triple radiator?
i.e. are you watercooling for fun and silence, or for ocing?

If there were room for a triple dont you think he wouldn't have to move the PSU half inside/half outside in order to fit the double?

No joke and what a stupid question

Well after consulting with my experts I've come up with the hardware specs for this project. Let's take look:

Updated:::

AMD Athlon 64 FX-55
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI
Fujitsu 147GB 15,000RPM Ultra SCSI320 80pin Hard Drive
Adaptec Single-Channel SCSI PCI Card Model "19160"
CORSAIR XMS, Xtra-Low Latency 2-2-2-5, 184-Pin 1GB(512MBx2)
Dual NVIDIA 6800 Ultra PCI-Express
Plextor 16X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW SATA Drive
PC Power & Cooling 510SLI PSU

SONY SDM-P234/B 23" Wide Screen Flat Panel LCD
Logitech Z-5500 5.1 Digital Speaker System w/Digital Hardware Decoder

I think this will do nicely ;)

Hmm. Replace the MSI for DFI Lanparty SLI-DR, and memory for BH-5 and you're all set :) BTW, Corsair Pro memory looks (IMO) gay to the max (at least when it's working). You're better off getting Ballistix tracer if you want LEDs. Or you could make LEDs yourself.. that G.Skill guy at xtremesystems, OnePageBook soldered some leds on his DIMM. It's not easy, but then again what you've done is next to impossible to begin with. I'm sure you're a surgeon with a soldering iron.

Also, IIRC, you wanted to play Doom³ on this rig, and 2Gb is pretty much useless for that.. just get 1Gb of BH-5. Or TCCD, either which.

I'm starting to get worried about your WC setup, if you want to have a SLI array, though.. i mean there's no way that 120mm rad can dissipate all that heat! You'd need a 3x120mm rad at least...

I wouldnt use a DFI under any circumstances--the MSI is pretty respectable, especially with the onboard soundblaster 7.1which eliminates the need for a PCI sound card. Unless you missed the post, I think a dual 120MM rad will be fine. BTW I like Gay ram with tight timing and LL---so.. :D

lol, awesome, well said. It looks like this disturbingly awesome case will be complemented with some hot hardware! Although its kinda wierd that its going to become a computer, I was getting used to seeing it as just a beautiful work of art... ;) :D

edit - that quote is definitely getting nabbed for my sig... :)

STOP. If you get 4x512mb on an amd, it downclocks it to ddr333 or pc 2700. this is because the amd cannot support 4 sticks of ddr400.
You will have to either get 1gb in 2x512mb, or 2x1gb.

i've got the same problem with an asus board and amd xp 2200+...it has 3 slots but but i can just use 2 of them with ddr400

I guess that you will either have to go with 1gb, or 2 x1gb of 2336 memory.
However, this memory will only lose you like 2fps in doom. (only difference will be in artifiicial memory benchmarks), and having 2gb is way cooler

:edit: 2x 512GB is the plan, taking into consideration the AMD ;)

but how low latency can you get?
I know that you can't get their xl (2-2-2-5).
What have you found, and where can you buy?
I am in same situ, building same spec but with gts...
