Doom III: Project Mars City (Comments Thread)

This has inspired me to go out and get a paasche VL series airbrush, witch wil arrive in a few days, then It further inspired me to work on my own uber-super cool mod (Patent pending)

I gave that a try--but it seems even on slow speed the 40mm fan dissipates the smoke so much that it is pretty thin--so I'm going to leave it with the single fan and have heavier smoke. Believe me the smoke looks great.it .just cant be captured in a single photo.
 
I figured that that would happen. You know, you're just going to have to make a video showing it in action to prove how good it looks... :D
 
The Smoke Stack tower looks great, will look greater when LEDs are installed cant wait to see. Job VERY well done on the whole Mod. Oh BTW how are you gonna power the Always On LED over the airlock door? 5V Standby Rail perhaps?
 
I remember reading a while back when you were making the airlock that you wanted to have it servo actuated. Is this still in the works? If so, have you worked on it yet? What will you use to control it? Haha, sorry about the butt-load of questions... :D

Yep that red airlock light will be on the 5v standby--and switch to white when the airlock opens on power-up.
 
I am completely stunned at the amount of work that is being put into this "case" mod.. It's absolutely amazing. There's an LCD in in FFS! :eek: Congrats to you on the case.... It's turning out gorgious. ;)

How are you making the steam? How hot is it when it comes out? It seems like a safety hazard, depending on how you make the steam.

I called the manufacturer of the smoke (assuming it's the same smoke fluid offered on the website Crim made reference to on his webpage). They said it's basically the same as theatrical smoke, and "the federal government tells us it's safe, so (it is)..."

I used to have a New Brite remote control construction set (bulldozers, tractors, etc.), and it used the same fluid. It wasn't hot at all, just made the smoke. If it's safe enough for me to be huffing it down in my younger years, then it must be ok :D

however, most of that stuff can be adapted for modding purposes with a little work ;)

i always recommend them.
 
I used to be into RC airplanes, and I remember there was a company that made something that would slow a servo. It hooked up between the reciever and the servo. It was used for servos that would control landing gear, so that they would open slower and more realistically. If you could find one of those, you could use it in conjunction with the servo control board. That way you could control the speed that the airlock opens.

Yes this has all been considered--ground that was covered long ago in the planning.

Great job! Every time I see an update, that case just gets [H]arder and [H]arder. I eagerly await the finished product.

Also, I'm starting to worry that by the time the case is finished, noone will be playing Doom3, and they will have moved on to Quake4! :)

Maybe you can get some early artwork for Quake 4 and start building it ready for a BTX computer in advance, so its ready for the game launch. All you do is put the latest components in last since those will change many times before the launch.

Doom is already a legendary title, it isnt going to be forgotten anytime soon. As for a Quake case, You do it first and we will all follow from your ideas and example. :D

Since it is just slowing down the signal that is reaching the servo could you not use 2 in series for a total of 4.4 seconds? (Sorry if i'm talking crap)

Hey mashie, I just had a thought. They sell servos specifically for landing gear of RC planes which take much longer to travel end to end than a normal servo, Like this. It turns 180 degrees, at 60 degrees in 0.5 seconds. So, thats 1.5 seconds already. If you hooked one of those up with the servo rate controller, wouldn't it take longer than 2.2?
