Doom III: Project Mars City (Comments Thread)

IT'S ALIVE!!!

I appreciate everyone being patient while I take care of some other projects---I've been itching to get some work done on D3 myself!

Well here is the latest update...While the airlock was cool...i was pretty much "meh" about the LCD control panel--and I think a few of you out there were as well..so I went and carved out that LCD panel area and installed a tiny light box--with an LED. I then went and made an inkjet transparaency of the airlock LCD from a screen grab--I also enhanced the image with some saturation (since it's the size of a postage stamp!) and sharpening.

I then used a little spray adhesive to mount this inject transparency (there were like 6 images on the sheet in case I screwed up cutting them out) onto a sheet of white paper. After cutting it out, I mounted it on that little plastic light box I made and coated it in 5minute epoxy to create a lens. Here's some pics:

Suggestion for door LCD:

make different separations and stack the transparencies. it will and just a TINY bit of depth to it. I know it sounds silly on such a small scale but it could look really nice and "3D".

sounds cool---do one first and if it looks better, I'll give it a try ;)

The LCD light is a little bright now that i look at more. --I'll have to tone it down a bit with a beefier resistor. Here are a few pics (long exposure) showing the red status light of the airlock. This will turn to white when the system is powered on and the doors open.

Hmmm..is this a screenshot from the game-- weird huh?

It's the attention to detail that makes this thing a true work of art. "Good job" doesn't begin to cut it.

Crim, excellent work so far,

you potentially wanted 2gb ram, as doom 3 does benefit from this.
however, most of them are at best 3-3-3-8 or whatever.

However, OCZ has just released their OCZ titanium series for server and wokstations.
they are very fast, and ultra reliable. their unbuffered versions at densities of 1024mb per stick, have a CAS of 2-3-2-5, which can be tweaked down to 2-2-2-5......

this would make the maching amazing, as 1gb of ram is almost too normal in such a kick ass case spec don't you think?

My good, it's soooo beautiful. Great work Crim, I only wish I had as much talent in my entire body as you have in your pinky finger.

Crim,
That looks so amazing.
I had no choice but to go back into Doom and look around at the airlocks, just to make sure that you didn't just rip some screeny.
You have so great skills and I truely think that after you finish this case (and have had time to enjoy it for yourself) you should put it up for sale on Ebay. I bet you could get a very nice sum for that work o' art.

I thought you had stopped updating. I had changed to your own site to keep up with your progress when you put it up and I saw you hadent updated in a long while. Came here and saw you where still working on it. Your doing an amazing job. Ill hope to jump into the moding field one day. When im out of college and have some money. Now I can only afford to do small mouse mods...

You can get decent color fades with rattle cans. Armed with Krylon Fusion paint (which comes in limited but very "Doomish" colors like Burgundy, hot Pepper and black) I gave this Logitech MX1000 laser mouse a simple, easy paint job that I think looks pretty neat. The tail end of the mouse is black, then fades into the burgundy and then into the hot pepper color in front. Once the clear acrylic topcoat is cured, i'll give it a light wetsanding and then some 3M compound and finaly a polishing glaze.

You can work the spray paint on any piece to create a fade, as long as you don't put it on too heavy or work too close to the object. It takes practice, but if you don't have access to an airbrush you should give it a try!|

you know what this means crimson...
When you get the time on your hands you have to post a short worklog showing how you pulled off that beautiful shaker can fade. I'd love to see your shaker technique!

how do you make those decals man ;)

I must admit your one of the greatest moders around :D

My first post in the comments thread, like everyone here has said, awesome, incredible, stupendous, makes the best kod Ive ever done look like crap - simply incredible.

I cant believe no ones actually said it yet, but 1 million views on the log! and 650k on the comments. Incredible, Crimson, you deserve every commendation youve received so far, and all the ones people havent said yet that should be. Period.

Dude! you put Avtivision on there but not ID???

LoL---well the iD logo will be built into the Martian terrain eventually---also I'm working on getting a laser-etched acrylic badge for the case as well--it will have the names of the iD software team :D

but how did you make the logo's???

also man again i must say GOOD JOB ;)

You can make your own waterslide decals on an inkjet printer with this type of paper. In addition, here is some more information.

After the decals are applied I put several layers of clear acrylic spray topcoat on to seal them, sanding between each layer with 1200 grit wet/dry paper. Again, the last step is to use rubbing compound and polishing glaze if you want shine :D

CS, if you're not already working for LucasFilm or another company that utilizes miniatures - you should be. Don't let those talents go to waste on individual projects. Seriously man, absolutely incredible.

are we going to see a matching mouse pad with terrain to match the base of the case?

you haven’t updated in forever, im checking 3 times a day to see this thing lol
