Doom Eternal

I finally picked this up when this game came out around Covid 2020 there wasn't alot of OLED monitors out there I wonder if people had OLED display would have a Change of Heart back when they played it in their IPS or whatever.
Doubt it, it wasn't the visuals that people disliked, it was the change in gameplay over 2016.

The new games are good, but I think I prefer Doom when it is action survival horror rather than an arena shooter. I have had more fun with Doom 3 than the new ones even if it is not without flaws. I don't like that enemies can just teleport in out of nowhere and would have instead preferred to discover/destroy/evade monsters that were integrated into the environment. Something more like Alien: Isolation I guess where threats have more physicality. And there was the inexplicable flashlight silliness and things like that.

I'm glad they didn't keep making more like Doom 3, the game was just too slow paced for me. I think some kind of offshoot doom survival horror series could work, sorta like alien isolation as you say. I actually enjoyed that despite typically not caring much for stealth games. Speaks to how good it was I guess.

I agree. Doom 3 was a little too cramped and claustrophic I think.

That would be pretty cool.

I remember the Doom 3 IHV Alpha that was allegedly leaked by ATI. Of course, it was so unoptimized and ran like crap, but I really liked the 3 levels that were included and were disappointed when they didn't make it into the final game.

That leak did have a pretty nice vibe. Not perfect and incomplete in many ways of course, but for a leaked tech demo it was interesting and intriguing. It had a hunt or be hunted (haunted?) feel to it that I enjoyed. That and the HL2 leak were so exciting back then..

I don't like the game refunded it the game suffers from what you should focus on at any given moment while playing thus resulting in a blinding experience.
I suppose a Borg from Star Trek might like the game since his eye is open all the way all the time.

I can understand why some would see it that way. In many ways it's just an arena shooter like the old unreal tournament games, just with a lot more complexity. I still enjoyed it but never have gotten around to playing the final DLC yet. I think I've had my fill of it though, it's a very intense game.

Official mod tools were released. You know what would be even better, Bethesda? If you allowed id to go back to the old standard of releasing the source code for the engine after a certain amount of time has passed. That is the only reason the original DOOM has endured for more than 30 years at this point.

I wish they would release the engine source, but they likely couldn't even if they wanted. Middleware licensing will get in the way.

Wow looking though their docs, I am shocked that some parts of the engine design seem very old school indeed.

I'm amused to find they still have the same kind of entity system and even a "world spawn" entity, a concept dating back to the very first Quake.

IIRC John Carmack said in on of his keynotes that they would probably not opensource any more engines due to patent trolls. Basically the fear of a patent troll looking through their code and finding something to sue them over. Even creative forced EAX into Doom 3 due to patent infringement (the way Doom 3 cast shadows). Not that it was a bad thing for gamers IMO as EAX was much better than the software sound engine, but still not ideal way to get hardware sound into a game.

Finished this last night, I thought it was bad ass but can see why some might have been turned off by changes in gameplay mechanics. Definitely more frenetic and verticality compared to Doom 2016. Also seemed way fucking harder on Ultra Violence - I tried Nightmare on the first couple of levels but found it way too punishing to be fun. I will move onto the Ancient Gods expansions when they are next on sale and I feel like having that Doom fix again.

I still thought doom 2016 was better than eternal. better mix of old and new. can't for dark ages
Doom 2016 was one of those games that I basically couldn't put down until it was finished. Eternal was great fun too, but I'm definitely in the camp of those who didn't like it as much...as evidenced by the fact that I put it down at some point and still haven't finished it. I want to eventually, because I think it's good enough to warrant completion, but it didn't have that special something that kept me glued to it til the end like some games do.

But I'm also one of those folks who loved Doom 3 and the direction they went for that entry. So while I'm glad to hear that The Dark Ages is changing things up again after Eternal, I'll just have to play it and see how I feel about the newest iteration. It looks good but I can't say I'm absolutely captivated by it the way I was Doom 3 and 2016...yet, anyway.

Eternal tried way too hard to have you play it the exact way it wanted you to play rather than letting you just Doom Slayer your way through shit however you see fit
EXACTLY.

I got almost 300 hours in that shiznit. I've re-played the entire game and individual levels more times than I remember.

Ironically for me that was the ONE game in the entire series I didn't care for.

After Eternal disappointed me, I'm taking a very cautious approach with The Dark Ages. I definitely needs hands-on with it before I can even consider a purchase (but that's my usual approach to most games). Doom Eternal was a gift so it wasn't something I got to check out ahead of time, but at least I didn't pay for it.

I will move onto the Ancient Gods expansions when they are next on sale and I feel like having that Doom fix again.
Hope you enjoy them waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than I did. Cuz to me they were worse than the base game.

the Archvile was the most annoying enemy in the game...the Maruader was difficult at first but became easy once you figured out his moveset and you had plenty of space to move around in...the challenge was the best part of Eternal but it became a fun challenge...it can get really hectic with them throwing every enemy at you in waves and waves...games which challenge the player are why I play video games

I thought Doom 3 was decent enough the one time I played it. Though the constant jump scares were pretty lame. It's the kind of game that works the first time you play it but doesn't really have any replay value in my opinion. I prefer Doom being a more action oriented game as it was originally intended. So far, Dark Ages delivers as it does everything better than Doom Eternal did.

Who the hell plays the awful multiplayer in this game?

Doom 3 is still my favorite in the series.

Yes Doom 3 is my fav as well, it is the most replayed game that I have.
As for the multiplayer in Eternal, never played it.
Now 2016 I played a bunch of MP before they wiped and reset every ones status and made the MP DLC 's free.

Thankfully, the asymmetric MP fad seems to be dying. I really wish the invasion mode made it into the game, though.

It's either DM or if the servers are overflowing, TDM for me.
They use to have a pretty cool SnapMap for CTF in Doom 2016 that was good though.
