Doom 4 expectations

The hw jokes are dumb. Doom 3 ran well and scaled across a variety of machines. I expect that trend to continue with Doom 4. By the time it arrives, I expect even a modest PC's Doom 4 experience, will totally outclass the console versions of Doom 4.

At the time Doom 3 was out, I had a P3 with a GeForce 2 MX. which was far from the high-end systems. Still I was able to finish it there, obviously with all the detail turned down. I remember that the boss in Hell put my system to a crawl, but the remaining levels were less demanding and playable.
Same thing happened with HL2. I had to lower all the detail and had basically the same performance numbers as with Doom 3 on the same system.

I thought Doom 3 was pretty good for what it was...I wasn't expecting Half-Life levels of narrative, gameplay or depth. I do lament the replacement of the demonological influences with sci-fi elements in both Doom and Quake, though.

Loved Doom 3 ... I thought the story was quite engrossing and well developed
Never cared much for HL2 ... long boring levels, plus i love Id's monster design

D4 could not go wrong in my opinion ... thankfully we ll have Rage in the meantime

i want to see multiplayer where myself and my brother can play accross a lan standing back to back as demons come at us from all angles i want sections where he loses his gun and i'm the only one to defend us both and vice versa. i want some aspects on enemy territory ported accross whereby an assualt on a hell base (last level of doom 2 almost) is required and far cry type open play allows you to attack from all angles, breakable glass would be nice in the indoor environments. i would like to be stuck in a room with a radar showing incoming demons i have 2 minutes to plant traps (proxy mines laser mines etcetc) before a hundred imps attack i want the ammo i have at the time be carefully calculated so that i only just have enough and have to start pistol whipping people. i want genuine situations where i have to hide and situstions where i am running for my life. i want to run accross hell backwards shooting at htings chasing me with a exit 5 mintues run away from me

if this is to be carmacks swansong i want everything please

Someone get this man a job making video games.....he just described perfection.

i just want something fun, not compeltely black, and gameplay a little more varied then walk 5 feet hear a noise turn around blindly shoot an imp and watch it die.

The game was just too predictable and not scary...

people got to stop with this "doesn't run on current hardware" crap!!!! what is wrong if a company makes the graphics soo amazing that a year from its release you can play it again with better graphics!!!!! ALSO, if the game runs like shit, there is something called, settings, go figure, where you can lower the setting to medium..

when doom 3 came out, i got a geforce 6800GT, ran well for me.. if id made doom 3 run on high using onbaord intel graphics, people would still complain, saying, "waaa, the graphics suck"

FOR FUCK SAKES!!!!

The game didn't scale as well as you might think. By the time Doom 3 was released, I was running a 9700pro with a P4 Northwood 2.53ghz. I could play at 1024*768 fairly well on medium, but I'd always hit spots where the game would drop to 12 fps (basically any firefight). Even on low at 640*480 the game would suffer from massive FPS drops, thanks to the insanely demanding shadowing system.

yeah, same here. But then again, by that time, the 9700 pros were starting to show thier age. If you turned dynamic shadows off it helped a lot

That's true. I guess I was a little irked b/c they demoed the game in 2002 on a 9700pro.

If I can find my install discs I'll try re-playing some of the Hell missions w/ my 4870 1gb. I'd imagine that D3 doesn't have the wow factor it used to have, but it could still be a lot of fun!

What do I want? I want the old Doom 1/2 style of slaughtering mindless hordes of zombies, with some friends in coop. Totally unrealistic, probably not very graphically impressive, but FUN! I love the old run-and-gun multiplayer games, which I think is the reason I enjoyed Left 4 Dead so much.

Now, what will we get? Another Id tech demo that has amazing graphics, a phenomenal environment, lame gameplay, cheesy characters and plot.

(Yes, if you couldn't tell, I'm part of the bitter crowd who loved Doom 1/2 and was sorely let down with Doom 3. Quake 4 was fun, but lacked that Id polish.)

When the game came out I ran it a 1280x1024 at HIGH(not ultra) settings on a 6800GT and it worked like a charm...you card was to old by the time sorry.

One reason being that NVIDIA asked Carmack what features he would like to see in a card...he replied, NVIDIA listened.

Brings back lot of memories:

change the settings to low :)

change the settings to low :)

While that works...then the game looks like ass, and often times actually worse than last-gen games that were optimized for current hardware instead of "future hardware."

Of course people will complain if they can't max it out, just like they did with Crysis. Somehow I doubt we'll see people blindly accusing Tech 5 of being "poorly optimized" though.
In any case id are firmly multi-platform these days, so while it might well be more detailed on the PC, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be bleeding-edge and require monster hardware.

Then you know John Carmack very poorly.
All his 3D engines has been able to scale past the hardware available at release time.

I don't pretend to know Carmack at all, but for one thing, no they haven't (Wolf3D? Doom/Tech1?), and for another I didn't actually say Tech 5 wouldn't.

If I recall correctly there was a texture setting in Doom 3 that was meant for 1gb cards, there were no 1gb cards even made at the time. People still tried to turn it on and complained that it wouldn't run great on their 512mb. Hopefully they do stuff like that with Doom 4, however they may be too afraid as mentioned already when most companies future proof their engines people try to pump up the settings and complain when it doesn't work with their hardware.

Take Crysis for example. Now I'm not saying Crysis runs great or coded to the best it could be, however for what it is I'm surprised how well it runs on lower systems. I'm not really too surprised I can't run on enthusiast settings with my 8800gt with ideal FPS, single player is fine however multi player is where you need those extra fps.

my 8800gt isn't really enthusiast, I understand that however apparently most people don't..

Looking at the presentations, scalability looks to be one of the key features of Tech5.
Alongside unified development eviroment...and oh yeah, this:

I always thought the idea of companies building games for the future is a cool idea but people just don't understand. If they can't have it set on max graphics at 60fps they get pissy, even though medium settings are still amazing and run well.

I think the only way companies can do this is to have edits in the .ini that enthusiast can make to unlock modes. By adding a drop down graphic quality for 'ultra'/not capable on current hardware graphic options, your just asking for bitching by people who don't know what they really want.

It was an ultra texture setting that required 512MB vram. The only difference was it used uncompressed textures for normal maps or something. The difference in visual quality was unnoticeable.

That sounds more right, It's been so long I couldn't remember, couldn't be bothered to look it up though.

Even then people were only using only 256mb at the time so it's the same deal there.

The Ultra setting actually was playable on 256 MB cards, in my opinion. I played through the first half of the game on Ultra with my 6800 GT and then reduced it to High later on. I never noticed any significant differences.

Carmack clearly said that it required 512MB cards, and everyone with 6800s in SLI were complaining because obviously 2 x 256MB cards = 512MB right?!? (No, they don't add.)

I have always been fond of the Doom and quake series. I enjoyed Doom 3, for what it was; however, I definitely enjoyed Doom 2 a lot more. I hope to see Doom 4 have more in common with Doom 2 than Doom 3, gameplay wise.

I can tell you what I expect from Doom 4. I can expect that I will be upgrading my computer because of this game. I upgraded my computer to play Doom 3 (6800GT), then I upgraded for Crysis (8800GTX)... and I believe my next upgrade will be for Doom 4.

I can remember playing Doom 3 for the first time... oh man. That was amazing. I still have a Doom 3 poster on my wall and I still have the Doom 3 Pc Gamer world first review issue framed which used to be on my wall.

P.S. Anyone know anything about that I.D. game called RAGE? Or was that just the game engine?

Does anyone here think it would be cool if it kind of went in the way of the movie (not the plot), but what I mean is if the "invasion" got back to Earth and you would end up having to battle the hell invasion in supermarkets and office complexes and military installations... It would be kind of cool for it to have a little bit of Prey-like qualities. Where, you are battling stuff in your location but there would be the occasional tv or radio broadcast that would show stuff going on elsewhere and news reports... I think it would be cool.

As far as the graphics... it should be on par with the first person sequence from the movie Doom. haha. That would be great.

I'd love that... i'd love a Left 4 Dead style Co op where u have to reach a checkpoint
Place full of zombies and the bosses are the super deamons

Gun WITH Flashlight

Those don't exist so it would be unreasonable to include them in a game since there is no RL counterpart.

Or at least thats what I thought ID was thinking the first time I played it as I was going "This game sucks and they ae pathetically trying to make it scary by denying you a light source and gun simultaneously . . . LAME!".

Before I made it 15 mins into the game I found a mod online that gave me an flashlight on the pistol and assault rifle :)

Honestly, I haven't been scared by a game since the licker jumped thru the window at the police station in RE2.

I think they should put items in the game that you can use to enhance things. Such as a roll of tape to fix flashlights to your guns or tie two guns together ala Aliens. scrap metal to insert into your armor for added protection. Chemicals to make "home-made explosives" and medical supplies. They should definetly add an inventory system or at least a back pack of some sort. I think if they added that kind of thing it would add even more immersion to the game, not that it really needs it.

the article on hardocp saying "Sony Pictures CEO Thinks No Good Has Come From Internet"... Soon another one is going to say "Game developers think no good has come form the internet" because all people do is bitch about great games!!!

Yeah Doom IV is going to kick your fucking ass like a sledgehammer to the face!, if its anything like Doom 3 was and the hardware we have now, expect to pee your pants on multiple occasions. Its too soon to start rumors now though, but I have way high expectations for this. And just like Doom 3 did as far as hardware and computer graphics its going to change everything. Cant wait!.

You got me excited. It's going to be like a sledgehammer to my face and I'm going to pee my pants. Awesomeness.

If Doom 4 can recapture the feel of Doom 1 and 2 then it'll be fantastic. A map editor is essential

1. Alot of initial sales
2. People think it's awesome for a bit
3. Sales continue
4. People realize it sucks.
5. People wait for Doom 5 to rock

It may not suck, technically it will be outstanding. A savvy 2009 gamer needs more than baddies jumping out from broomcupboards, the triggers in D3 were so predictable than it became monotonous and about as scary as something not scary

You had some sort of bottleneck, my Athlon XP Barton @ 2.2GHZ and a Radeon 9800Pro could run the game just fine at 1024x768 high quality, I got IIRC 55~ fps on the timedemo demo1. (yeah I know a 9800Pro was newer tech compared to 9700, but it wasn't 50% faster or anything)
