Doom 4 expectations

I think the problem with Doom 3 being scripted doesn't even have to do with replaying it. They did the same "monster behind the door" gag 100 times. Plus, exactly how scary is an imp after you've just killed 500 of them? It desperately needed some variety within the game itself.

where is the spidermastermind?? the arachnotron?? the dopefish??

WTB Quake 2 Multiplayer fun level, with better graphics, thank you.

You can title it whatever you want, but none of the games, Doom 2 forward compared to Quake 2 for me.

Its sad, but I still look at every FPS I play and I want to see "bind key for grappling hook" but nobody feels the <3 :(

id went downhill like a bus full of fattys

I don't want dark hallways. I want all-out fire, brimstone, demons, and mutilated corpses everywhere. Pure hell, illuminated by fire. I want some outdoor levels with lakes of blood and lava like in the original DOOM.

I'm a expecting a good and fun game with awesome graphics, as basically all the id games I've played before. I liked Doom 3 a lot, since it was the first game I played that showed me what happened, through the use of PDA info (video, audio or text) caught up in the levels we visited, as we progressed in the game. A concept that is now used a lot, which I find very interesting and helps put together any storyline quite nicely.

What about a doom set in modern times? That would be cool. Failing that medieval doom with shotgun crossbows and holy water cannons. :p

I'd forgotten about the Heretic and Hexen games. Those absolutely rocked. That's a franchise that would be cool to revisit with the Doom 3 engine.

whats with all the doom 3 hate.. if scripted events makes the game good, why not put it in.. really, who replays the same game anyhow????
Everything in HL2 was scripted as well, but for some reason you never see people hating it there... go figure . Ever since Doom 3 came out it was popular to throw on a gaming elitist facade and shoot it down; over four and a half years later everyone still at it.

Anyway, Doom 3 was awesome just like Doom 1 and Doom 2. Honestly, I hope it's all the same with just a little more added. Some tweaks to the gameplay and guns (gun with flashlight, for the love of god), obviously better graphics; I hope they really go for realism, even more so this time.

Scriptedness wasn't part of the doom games of the past thats mainly way. The monsters AI controlled the game before. I think it was better like that also. The guns were much more realistic also compared to doom 3. The sounds even had more of a punch to it. The environments were always fun to be in since it was pretty much hell on earth. Every map was unique compared to the last unlike doom 3 where it was all just rooms pretty much. Hopefully they listened to the fans on this one ;)

ya know thats a very good point. For some reason I didn't mind it in HL2... go figure lol Not sure why either, but it just really irritated me in D3. Maybe it just felt more seamless in HL2?

I LOVED DOOM3! i played it on my projector with 5.1, loved it...

but honestly, people are going ot hate me , but environments make games, thats why i think i love crysis, the environment and graphics made it feel soooo real!

I EXPECT it to be PC ONLY and ported to a console later. If it is not PC ONLY it will be a complete and utter FAILURE! Doom=PC (yes I know Doom was on the Atari 2600, I had it.)

I think Doom was ported into just about any system that had more then 32kb of ram :D

Doesn't make much sense. With id Tech 5, porting is, literally, as easy as clicking a button. In fact, there really is no core concept of "porting" with Tech 5: it's almost entirely seamless to anyone working with it.

There are obviously going to be differences with respect to menus, input mapping, shader optimization (here and there) and so forth, but the core stuff is all 1:1.

As usual with ID, I expect the graphics to be stellar.
As usual with ID, I expect the gameplay and story to be crap.

Discounting the original Doom 1 and 2. Gotcha.

Overall, so much hate on Doom... makes me a sad panda. I guess I'm the minority (in this thread) who honestly enjoyed playing through Doom 3 multiple times. ( And through Doom 1/2/Ultimate/Final, hundreds of times)

Co-op absolutely needs to be back though. I still remember rocking through Doom, co-operatively over a 14400 modem. There was a CyberDemon on the first level in that little tiny outdoor area! Fuckin awesome!

I'm hoping for a very fast-paced action shooter with no flashlight required. Just like in the original game where if you entered a dark area (which was not every 3 steps) you'd stumble about for a bit till you found your way out. I'm hoping for seperate 'levels' not like one big linear progression with backtracking and shit. I also liked how in the original the 3 episodes gradually (somewhat) progressed from tech/futuristic base type settings to gross/gooey demon hell.

I want a nice metal soundtrack (not licensed music with singing either), just a futurstic thrash metal type sound.

I think i recall reading that they ARE going to make it more action-focused with more enemies onscreen at a time... hopefully.

Mark Morgan meets Sonic Mayhem  aaalright.

I would love to fall into a Dark room only to find out that a Cyber-Daemon awaits me and the only way out is to kill him so that he falls on the wall that shatters and provides me a passage.

IDK about you, but being trapped in a pitch black room with a Cyberdemon would be the last thing I would want...

The issue isn't with scripted events, the issue is with their variety. In Doom3 they overused the whole "Monster jumps out of a secret room whose door opens once you walk a few steps past it!!!" script way too many times. If that happens more than once an hour in your game, you've used the script probably 3x as much as you should. In Doom3, I'd have taken once an hour over what they gave us. It got to the point where you could look down a hallway and go "A monster will jump out there, and there." That's not surprising, scary, or fun anymore.

Scripted events can be awesome, but if I'd had to drive under 37 falling towers in the Route Kanal section of Half-Life 2 instead of just one, I would have complained about that too.

DOOM3 totally had too much of the monster surprise BS. I'm looking forward to DOOM4 since they did supposedly hire some writer and I hope I can run it on my system but they'll probably take their sweet time on it.

No, not a gun with a flahlight. Hell, not even a flashlight. I want outdoor levels like in doom 2.

John Carmack said Doom 4 would have twice the detail of Rage, or rather be targeted to run at half the framerate in his words, paraphrased. Since Doom 4 will be out over a year later, start saving your pennies. :p

Why'd you have to go and make this thread, man? I'll have a level 99 Barbarian in Diablo 3 and still be dreaming of this game's release. :(

Definitely this too. Not even outdoor, just not pitch black all the time. It wasn't nearly as scary as it was frustrating.

Dark
Flashlight + Weapon
Little to "NO" multiplayer
Fun for about one play through
Decent Graphics that aren't used properly, i.e., dark.

Oh....

Braley runs on current top end system to fullest potential.. have to wait for the next years upgrade path of the medium - top rig to run it well... on the EXTREME 1024 MB graphic memory setting!

I expect that the main character will be some old grandma being sued by an army of RIAA and MPAA zealots trying to take over the world's pocketbook. She'll whip out her pimp cane and bitchslap them all into a fiery pit that mysteriously opens up underneath Hollywood while The Pirate Bay siphons off their money with a flashlight in a dark room and there might be a rocket or two involved, but the installer is going to lock down which version of windows you can install the game on and it'll be stuck on install on macs only because trent reznor sabotaged the installer with his music and a gay porn scene out of one of his music videos.

It could happen.

My frontal lobes just melted.

edit: I just turned the microwave on and not only did I piss myself, I forgot just who the hell I was for 30 minutes.

+1 to that, One of the original dooms strong points is the music
please no ambient arty crap

oh please redo d2m1's track

edit : since when was doom about scares and darkness? , as far as iam concerned the game is about fucking up 1000 demons before they fuck you up

The hw jokes are dumb. Doom 3 ran well and scaled across a variety of machines. I expect that trend to continue with Doom 4. By the time it arrives, I expect even a modest PC's Doom 4 experience, will totally outclass the console versions of Doom 4.
